    I remember taking off in this majestic aircraft - lifting off gently from the still waters then slamming brutally into a nearby forest along the shore. Good times.

    The biggest battle of the Felixstowe being on 4 June 1918 when three, circling over a fourth that had landed on sea after fuel failure, were set upon 14 German W.29 seaplanes, shooting down six without loss to themselves!

    Magz, I just love watching your videos. Funnily mostly about games I'd never play but it's still a pleasure watching you play them. The commentaries are just spot on with a mix of comments on the game itself, some history and explanation of what you're trying to do.
    Well done.

    Love seaplanes too, but it always amazed me that no seaplane manufacturer incorporated a retractable rudder to assist in sea movements. However that is one beautiful plane.

      Exactly. Floatplanes didn't even have water rudders until the 1940s, to my knowledge.

    Only one thing: The "Kriegsmarine" (Kreegsmarine sounds better than Craigsmarine btw ;-))existed from 1935 onwards, during WW1 the german Navy was called "kaiserliche Marine" (And I have no clue how to type out how you would pronounciate that) that would be the imperial Navy.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  Před 7 lety +4

      When I was talking about the Kriegsmarine I was talking about WW2 U-boat operations.
      Just pointing out an often forgotten fact that It wasn't the first time German U-boats had hunted in the channel. There operation and tactics had been established, Tested and proven effective during the first World War.

    • @samsilibam
      @samsilibam Před 7 lety +4

      Well, you said that the the Kriegsmarine didn't do this for the 1st time, they have done it all the way through WW1... I'm obviously not a native english speaker but in german language that would mean that they (- >the Kriegsmarine) did it. Which implies they were existant. But that doesn't matter, I just tried to share some info in case you didn't know. :-)

    @wolfbyte3171 Před 7 lety +3

    G'day Magz! If you're looking for a classification on that convoy cruiser, I would best estimate it's one of the Arethusa class of light cruisers- there were 8 of them built, oil-fired. I say this due to the three funnels (the earlier class, the Town, had four, and later classes had 2 save the C-class), and the lack of any significant aft mast.
    As for which ship out of the class she could be... any I believe. Arethusa herself had been sunk the year previous.
    The "cruiser" with the floodlight isn't a cruiser, at least if the silhouette is to be believed. It looks to be any ol' freighter.

    Such a beautiful plane.
    Regarding cockpit visibility: I'm not sure, but from the look of it, in addition to guidance from the forward gunner, the pilot may have been able to improve his forward visibility simply by standing up. It is after all a very stable platform, with an open cockpit...
    I wonder if that works in trackIR/VR...

    Hey Magz, I think I remember pilot's saying they use to quarter across the track of the submarine. so they could see it for longer, since it would be to the left or right of the nose of the plane. and since you aim where the sub "will be" not where it is. It made a lot of sense to me. just something I saw watching videos. I miss COD, and the young flying officer you did for a bit also. great videos as usual. keep up the fun

    Well, lucky that it seems German subs did not have anti-aircraft machine guns back then? Or you be a Swiss cheese in minutes!

    • @thelessofyouthebetter7002
      @thelessofyouthebetter7002 Před 5 lety +1

      Hitting a fast moving aircraft was difficult at that time because no training for it existed. At sea you were also less likely to encounter an airplane so there was little opportunity to practice unlike anti-aircraft gunners on land. Also the standard machine guns back then (just 7.62 mm) didn't have much range so if a flying boat was at a altitude (not that high due to the 7,62 mm never reaching any altitude to speak of) most of the bullets either had lost most of its velocity or simply got their trajectory bent like a curve due to the gravity affecting the bullets. This meant that few of them hit the plane, those who did caused little damage and quite a lot of them missed. A ship (or sub) riding on waves is going to move around a lot too so it's not exactly a stable platform to fire from.
      No, the real smart thing to do when spotting an attacking aircraft is to dive fast. Neither in WWI nor WWII were any submarines foolish enough trying to shoot it out with attacking airplanes. Because the plane usually outgunned the submarine and especially in WWII could shoot at it from ranges (using cannons) the defenders on the sub couldn't effectively engage the plane at. German WWII subs carried 20 mm flak guns as protection against aircraft attacks. In WWI aircraft were originally not considered a threat for any kind of shipping so none of the subs ever were designed with this contingency in mind. Deck guns existed for firing at other ships but none of those could be used to engage aircraft (and it would be futile anyway).
      Again, bombs from aircraft are dropped high above the submarine and from an altitude a WWI submarine wouldn't be able to do much by shooting at the aircraft with machine guns. The aircraft carries 7,62 mm machine guns too, which means that it's able to shoot at the sub from the same range the sub can shoot at it. But the plane is a smaller target and it moves faster.
