  • I give you a brief tutorial on how to wash a turbine engine on a Robinson R66. Amy and I cook up some food for the week, and I show you how a rate 1 turn goes when you are flying on instruments in a helicopter.

Amazing how small those single turbine engines are! Jay Leno has one of these engines on his motorcycle...

Ya there's nothing quite like the sound of a turbine firing up is there.

Would be nice to see the connections you made to the turbine and any torque specs for caps. Also… FYI… Robinson and Rolls Royce discussed rinsing with distilled water only at last years HeliExpo.

Somehow (although I am half Canadian, and flew into Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal in a Lear) I have never heard it called a "rate 1 turn." It must be a Canadian aviation expression.
In the US, we call it a "2 minute turn," or simply a "standard rate turn." Art Houston, CFII MEI

We use distilled water and ZOK 4:1 ratio, tap water is risky in my opinion!

Rolls Royce and Robinson also agrees that distilled water should be used for rinse.

can you not trim the tail so that is counter acts the torque? or is the tail controls variable based on collector and or engine speed?

Love the turbine start/spool up noise! Daft question but why is it washed? To remove carbon? 👍🏼😎

To rinse off deposits on turbine blades that can cause corrosion.

Is the student pilot, performing the rate 1 turn, wearing that visor to blind him so he only sees the instruments, or is that some new style for pilots that I'm unaware of?

Fraser_River Tackle_Supply Yes you are exactly right. We are trying to simulate being in cloud and not having visual references outside so they wear those goggles.
