I am glad we getting some longer reviews
One of the most insightful reviews I’ve ever seen on anything. Amazing work!!!
I wouldn’t have thought when I read it when it first came out in January that it would all these months later remain one of the strongest and best books of the year, but here we are. This, Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and Tom Lake are all excellent works by writers at the top of their form and creating master works of their careers.
Interesting that it’s the storytelling in these three books that is the the outstanding feature, and really good old fashioned storytelling, not the creative cutting edge striving of most authors this day to do something slick and complicated in structure or format with their works.
I feel like all your videos have such a great perspective in all the books you review, all of them are in such a great analysis and feels like you never lose Your parameter of quality, such an amazing job you do in here, thank you Clifford for always giving us this kinds of beauty love you man ❤
Thanks for the articulate and fierce approach as always Cliff. ✌
What a review! And I couldn't agree more with the message at the end about being self indulgent. What kind of a boring f*** would you otherwise be?
Very astute insights into this book. A lot of 80's writers being numb to life was a theme Jay McInerny in Bright Lights, Big City as well. It was also reflected in songs, The Goo-Goo Dolls (which isn't quite the era) but have the line "you bleed just to know you're alive." Also, Ellis' obsessions with numbness and serial killers was also present in The Doors with The End, The Crystal Ship, and Riders on the Storm (among others) didn't mean to go off on a musical bent, but maybe L.A. itself is creating those themes, which you I think you may have suggested. I think a lot of guys would risk having sex with someone they thought was really hot even if they thought they may be a serial killer. Just some thoughts off the top of my head. Excellent review.
15:30 was a good wakeup call, thank you, I needed it. There is plenty of room here and plenty easy to fill
Two great reviews. I've been on the fence about reading this, but you've convinced me.
Great review dude. Undoubtedly want to pick this up now
Ellis captured the ambience of the dingy clubs in the 80’s,down to the sticky floors.I have been praising this book and feel it has fallen on deaf ears. Thank you for spotlighting this magnificent work! Have you read “Babysitter” by Joyce Carol Oates? I thought it was also an excellent, undervalued piece of work in a similar vein.
Once again you've made a great review... And added another book to my TBR
The description of LA makes me think of the film Babylon
This all reminds me of the old adage "California is America's America.
love your takes, from London
I just finished this book and first thought that made me laugh was the way the narrator described in detail the freeways he took to get around and the SNL skit called The Californians that spoofed that culture.
Don't worry cliff. This channel for sure is one of the few attempts of preserving maturity 04:37
so happy to see my fav booktuber make a video about one of my fav modern authors ❤
Hello. Just found you. Great stuff. Keep it up. Or else.
Yeah, we don’t get news like that here. 😳
Really wish and hope you'll consider reviewing Hawkes' The Blood Oranges and any Dennis Cooper.
I love your analysis and insight to this book. I personally really enjoyed it to a point where I don't think I allowed myself to criticise it as much as I should have. But then, perhaps that suspension of the critic says something about how much I enjoyed the book - that I didn't want to criticise it. Thanks so much for what you do. I love following booky people, but it's rare that I find one that is so aligned with my tastes.
Based Cliff as always.
I was able to finish American Psycho when I had nothing else to read & saw it in the theater & "enjoyed" parts & Wm DeFoe's portrayal of the detective character.
I found glamorama in a free library & can't get into it.
I love the aesthetic of your videos.
Read this book on your suggestion and loved it. This video is a great accompaniment. I like your take.
A nice book review 👌Have no idea about that author. Thanks!
I just finished the book today and as a fan of BEE’s novels and his podcast, I’m left wondering; “what’s the point?”
Oh my....shivers....
I would like him to review Catch 22 it is my favourite book
" Father? Yes son. What does regret mean? Well son, the funny thing about regret is that it is better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done." The Butthole Surfers "Sweet loaf" You're welcome 👾
Free El Chapo
So someone who says a writer is self-indulgent is a communist?😅 (Have never read Ellis, am just bemused by Americans' obsession with communists and their love for using the term as an insult)
Not just that, but apparently you're either writing self-indulgent literature, or you're "common".
This channel has seen better days, imo.
@@onetruecaesar99oh shut up

Has everyone got a different edition of Less Than Zero to me? I found it the most boring book ever (apart from The Doors of Perception)..
