      And "The First Duty" is a key episode in Wesley's character ark through the show.
      Wesley's ark is best experienced through the episodes:
      "Where No One Has Gone Before"
      "Coming Of Age"
      "Samaritan Snare"
      "Menage A Troi"
      "Remember Me"
      "Final Mission"
      "The First Duty"
      "Journey's End"
      Though if you're going to watch DS9, best wait and watch "Journey's End" right before "The Maquis" 2-parter in DS9 season 2.

    3:55 - No, he's talking to Worf like he's a Starfleet officer. A "human" Starfleet officer. THAT was both an insult, and a test. Remember, Worf didn't know his brother was still alive after the attack on Khitomer.
    (Yes, Ollie, I know a lot of Star Trek lore, as well as Star Wars lore)
    6:10 - Because, Ollie... you should have picked up on that in the "Redemption" episodes. Since you didn't..... we weren't going to spoil it for you.
    8:00 - It's not Coruscant, Ollie.... it has its wildlife. How else could Klingons perform their "hunting" rituals?
    Side note: I would absolutely LOVE to see a Klingon Jedi at some point! Yes, I said it. Come at me, comment section!
    Second "Side note"... Ollie, have you seen season 1 episode 20 titled "Heart of Glory"? If not, you should!! It relates to this episode in a loose kind of way. Sorry, I can't remember what you have and haven't seen, since you bounced around so much.
    11:30 - I have actually used that line from Picard to avoid a fight a few times. "You may test that assumption at your convenience." You'd be surprised how well it works, as long as you're completely confident when you say it.
    14:05 - This shows how corrupt the Klingon High Council was at the time. K'mpec knew, KNEW it was Duras' father who had transmitted the codes to the Romulans (later "edited" to show Worf's father made the transmission), but his family was too powerful to be blamed. That's why the blame fell on Moug (sp). The funny thing is, and I'm only saying this because I DO remember you watching the episode where K'mpec was murdered.... it was Duros that poisoned him. Like father, like son. A traitor to the Empire. Duros wanted control of the Klingon High Council for himself, but he didn't count on Worf being the warrior he was.
    18:20 - Yes, you HAVE! He was in Redemption! Both parts! He didn't want to support Gowron, but Worf forced him into it.
    Gotta run, I'll finish the video as soon as I can!

    • @IggyStardust1967
      @IggyStardust1967 Před rokem +1

      Sorry, Ollie... family emergency. Everything is okay, though. Just had to be dealt with in the moment.
      21:12 - Questions like this are why you should have watched them in order. Not nitpicking.... just saying. Either way, I'm here for you.
      22:15 - You should. He's been in MANY different things. Great actor!
      24:20 - Ray Walston. The ORIGINAL "My Favorite Martian". Can't recommend that series enough, Ollie! I honestly think you'd like it. Bill Bixby co-starred (who also starred in the original Incredible Hulk television show I grew up on). It was from the 1960s, and is pretty "innocent" in its content. So, should be cleared for CZcams. Just a suggestion.
      31:40 - While I understand why you say that..... I can't agree. In the US, we have the 5th Amendment (which I'm sure you are well aware of, given that Canada has a better educational system than the US does)... but to put it simply, no one can be forced to incriminate themselves with their testimony. So, by "refusing to answer", Wesly was basically invoking his 5th Amendment right, even though talking to Picard was not in a court of law.
      Also, if you remember what Spock said in Star Trek 6, when Velarus said, "A lie?", he replied, "An omission."
      32:55 - OH! While I'm thinking of it.... since you're loving Wil Wheaton's performance here..... you REALLY might want to check out (or at least look into) the movie "Toy Soldiers", in which he co-starred with Lewis Gossett Jr. and many others. The movie is fantastic (my opinion)... and I really think you'd be surprised by it. Feel free to look up a trailer, and make up your own mind on it. I've not seen anyone do a reaction on that movie, so you could start a trend.

    The actor playing Nick LaCarno is the actor who plays a member of the crew in the 4th Star Trek series -Voyager which began during the run of DS9 and ran concurrently with it for 3 years. His name is different (Tom Paris), but the background story for his character is "First Duty" and actually references it in the pilot episode. The name difference is a discontinuity but it is forgiveable in light of his story arch in Voyager. My man you were in top form for this reaction: Commander Kurn liking popcorn kernels, Admiral Brand being on her brand, and Crusher about to "crusher" Mom's dreams 😂😂😂. Outstanding!!! You rock! Or in your parlance: You Bop!!! 😜💪😁

    • @mem1701movies

      The name difference is so they didn’t have to pay the writer for Locarno

    • @LMoftheCoast
      @LMoftheCoast Před rokem +5

      Yep, there’s two stories as to why the name change.
      The official story: during early production of Voyager the producers felt that Nick Locarno’s actions in First Duty made him irredeemable, and didn’t think that the audience would warm up to the character.
      The unofficial story: The name change was caused due to a clause in the writer’s contract, meaning that the writer of First Duty would get residuals for every appearance of Nick Locarno in Voyager. As Nick would be one of the main characters, and appear in practically every episode, that would be a lot of extra money being given to the writer that the producers didn’t want to pay.
      And so, Tom Paris was born.

    • @Drawkcabi
      @Drawkcabi Před rokem +7

      They basically wanted Robert Duncan McNeil for Voyager and they wanted him to reprise Nick Lacarno, they just didn't want to pay royalties to the writers of "'The First Duty" for every episode of Voyager so, Ta Da... Tom Paris who is almost an identical character is born.

    Fun fact, the Klingon homeworld used to be clearer but remember what happened in ST VI... Their atmosphere was polluted by the explosion of their moon.
    Klingons have some redundancy in their organs, one stab might not be enough to kill one, although the heart could still be a problem...
    Throwing Work under the bus, not for no reason, but to avoid a civil war. That being said, when Kemp'ec dies... all bets are off, especially since Work takes vengeance on Duras for his lover who also died under Duras' meddling.
    Klingon society is very ritualized, every gesture has a symbolic to it. Even Batl'eth fights are ritualized, each move means something and the quality of the execution of each move is judged. Some of those moves can be interpreted as veiled insults.

    I saw your comment about doing all of DS9 in order and having started rewatching myself, yeah, you kind of have to for the best experience. You can't really jump around like TNG and fully embrace it.
    There's a lot more character growth and serialisation in the show. Even in episodes with a "meh" A plot, the B plot might have some great moments that build things between characters or factions, that become more important later on. Friendships, tensions etc etc.
    It wasn't as appreciated back in the day of network tv and syndication, when you were at the mercy of the broadcaster to keep caught up (and if you were a kid it's very talky and "boring"). But now it's seen by many as the best Trek series because it really gets to the heart of the universe, and being able to see all the episodes in order via streaming lets the story unfold as intended.

    And another suggestion: You don’t have to mix in other movies. Just BINGE WATCH! We live in the "Streaming Era" so binge watching TV shows has been heavily normalized. Also these reaction videos are PRE RECORDED. So you could binge watch 7 seasons in a weekend or perhaps a week or so and then upload 2 episodes daily for WEEKS. And STILL have tons of other movies and TV shows to react to.

  • @STNeish
    @STNeish Před rokem

    The Next Generation (and DS9) is more serialized than the original series. You could watch any episode of the original show in any order (more or less) and it wouldn't be a problem, but TNG has MANY episodes which draw on material from prior ones. This means it's best if you watch the relevant prior episodes before watching later ones.
    This is also very true of DS9, and to some extent to Enterprise... but less so with Voyager, where events in one episode don't affect subsequent episodes much, if at all (even when they REALLY should).

      Wait a sec! You forgot that Kern was in "Redemption Pts. 1 & 2". That'll teach you to disobey clear instructions, Ollie! 😜 And to recap for you, "Reunion" is when K'Mpec is dying and Keh'lehyr comes to mediate the right of succession between Duras and Gowron. She finds out about the events of "Sins of the Father" and is killed by Duras. Then Duras is killed by Worf. In "Redemption" there is a civil war between the two factions and Kern returns on the side of Gowron against the Duras sisters. It ends with Worf's honor being restored.

      @Drawkcabi Před rokem +2

      Journey's End needs to be watched, but it sets up a huge storyline in DS9, best to wait until just before the Maquis episodes, then definitely watch it!
      But "The Child" that's like one of the worst episodes of TNG. It's almost as notoriously bad as "Code of Honor"! Best Troi episode is "Face of the Enemy" and an ensemble episode that Troi is great in is "Disaster" and Troi has a great "B plot" storyline in the episode 'Thine Own Self".

    • @LMoftheCoast
      @LMoftheCoast Před rokem +1

      @@Drawkcabi Personally I don’t think that The Child is anywhere near as bad as Code of Honor. It’s not a great episode, and has its own set of Unfortunate Implications, but Code of Honor was just a perfect storm of awful.
      Disaster, Face of the Enemy, and Thine Own Self are fantastic suggestions for Troi focused episodes however. Even if we don’t get to see his reaction to them, hopefully Ollie will find time to watch them, away from the channel.

    • @Drawkcabi
      @Drawkcabi Před rokem +3

      @@LMoftheCoastDefinitely think "Code of Honor" is hands down the worst, it's really awful, but for me "The Child" makes it into the same ballpark. I actually like everything about the episode that isn't focused on the Troi storyline, but that's the main part of the episode. The setting things up for the new season stuff I enioy...the introduction of the new characters, new sets, and acknowledging the changing dynamics of established characters. But everything going on with Troi is just too icky and disturbing to me.

    • @LMoftheCoast
      @LMoftheCoast Před rokem +1

      @@Drawkcabi I fully understand that. So many Unfortunate Implications in The Child regarding the Troi storyline. But as you say, the stuff surrounding that is pretty decent. Because of that I personally just can’t put it on the same level as Code of Honor.
      The plot line of The Child is rather icky, sure. But it’s not as outright offensive as Code of Honor is, and there’s nothing within Code of Honor that I can point to as any sort of redeeming feature.
      Regardless though, I would absolutely not put The Child on a list of good Troi focused episodes. :P

      @@LMoftheCoast I just realized if Ollie is going to watch DS9, knowing who Lawaxana Troi is and where she comes from is semi-important. Only in my opinion the season 1 episode that introduces her is pretty dull and a slog to get through. My favorite Lawaxana TNG episode is "Half a Life" and I think it's her best one, but if he only watches 1 episode before DS9 (either on his own time or as a reaction) maybe "Menage A Troi" is a better choice?

    Kern is mentioned in Reunion at the very end, but not by name. This episode along with Reunion, The Mind's Eye, Redemption 1 and 2, Unification 1 and 2 (indirectly), Birthright 1 and 2 and The Rightful Heir are the "Klingon episodes" that tell the story of Worf, Kern, and Gowron within TNG. DS9, after Worf joins the cast in Season 4, will go even further with the Klingons.

    • @Drawkcabi

      And Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country has Worf's grandfather, General Worf as Kirk and McCoy's defender at trial. Then the movie ends with them all at the Klingon colony, Camp Khitomer, where the famous peace treaty between the Federation and Klingon Empire was signed. Then later Camp Khitomer is the colony where Worf and his biological parents were living until Romulans staged a sneak attack with the aid of Duras' father.

    Now, that you watched quite a few TNG episodes to pick up some lore (nk, not Data's brother), maybe you'll also pickup things of the world suchlike saying: "I'm tired. I need 10 CC's pf Anaprovaline to study for my exams" or you actually write Dilithium crystals on a science rxsm.
    But guess what Dilithiun crystals is not 100% star Trek. It is called science fiction for a reason.
    Dilithium is a bonded atom of 2 lithium atoms. So while Star Trek is still science fiction, the use of lithium or dilithium to power space vehicles is not science fiction. It's being studied. Warp drive doesn't exist ominously but dilithium is hypothesized to cut time it takes to get from earth to Mars currently. Isn't that crazy?
