The ending of this movie always makes me wonder how many times, in real life, somebody has been thrown under the bus, or voluntarily crawled under it themselves, for the greater good. We're lucky enough to know that this is a fictional movie and that Batman is eventually redeemed, but I'm sure there have been hundreds of situations just like this throughout history that we will never really know the truth about; we'll never know who all of the real heroes were.

@JG the Faded Jedi Maybe, maybe not, maybe that and more.
I dislike champion worship. Wielding great power for the common good is a very dangerous thing. Instead of acting in the shadows to save the ignorant rabble from doom, we should promote mass enlightenment. It might be less exciting for storytelling, but that balance nourishes the heart and calms the mind.
And this movie, after all, also features the Joker explaining to Batman how he is the rabble's useful freak. But Batman then twisting that into an unsung-savior sacrifice theme is even worse. And saying that right now he needs to be the rabble's scapegoat is more of that bullshit. No, the ignorant rabble does not deserve any enemy image but themselves; a mirror shown.

It was relatively peaceful in TDKR. There must be 1000s of cities more corrupt than Gotham in that point of the story. So what was there motive? To hurt Bruce cause he killed/let die Ra's? I dont know. I cant remember a really strong motive.
From a simple action movie point of view, it seemed Batman went from ninja style fighting to more of a brawler? Maybe cause of his injured body, but regardless, not as enjoyable to watch. But im no martial arts expert.

To me he was really the glue that held it all together and it's a damn shame that his portrayal of Gordon doesn't get nearly as much praise or attention as Ledger's Joker or Hardy's Bane. He was the most human and believable of all the characters and truly brought Gordon to life in a way that was never done before on screen. To me, Gary Oldman will always be the definitive Gordon.

@@sotsubreivaj I dunno if I'd say he doesn't sell tickets, especially considering that in the last decade or so he's been widely recognized as one of (if not _the)_ greatest actors of all time and was really one of the only reasons most people saw Darkest Hour (for which he finally earned his long overdue Oscar), but I definitely agree with your overall point. Even when he's the main star of a film he never makes things about himself, but rather he lets his performance do the talking and has always shied away from the spotlight or falling into the whole paparazzi scene. In that sense he's always been the ideal actor in my eyes.
With that being said, after seeing The Batman this year, I have to admit that Jeffrey Wright has done a great job at filling the massive shoes Oldman wore with his portrayal of Gordon and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he does with the character next. I thought it'd be impossible, but thankfully they found an actor worthy of the task.

The thing about this movie in particular but also the whole trilogy is that they got the best supporting actors for every role. Like just look at Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. And I mean he was not as prominent in TDK but Cillian Murphy is an amazing actor too.
This is one of the best movies of all time and a big part of the credit goes to Heath Ledger and his astonishing performance but it wouldn't come close to the masterpiece it is without all these incredible minor characters.
Honestly it's insane to me that the new Batman somehow managed to get close to this one. I'll be honest the new Gordon is good and all but not one of them comes even close to the supporting actors Nolan had for his trilogy. Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis are great actors in their own right but to me at least Oldman and Caine are just of a different caliber. Hard to compare anyone to some of the greatest of all time.

When i first saw this movie as a kid, i was asking the same question in my head as Gordon’s son asks him. After a decade, on the cusp of my eighteenth birthday, i finally understood why Batman was thrown under the bus -for the greater good. It’s amazing how the director and screenwriters can capture the exact thoughts of both a small kid and a mature adult in the same scene. It’s also a life lesson to be learnt. Sometimes good people don’t get what they deserve but in the end the sacrifice or martyr proves that fundamental principles like nobility, honor and sheer willpower always defeat evil.

I don't see the Greater Good in this, but out of Skepticism, not out of Refusal... I'm just saying I never knew what It's like to get (for example, Myself) Thrown Under the bus, just to hide the Truth about someone else's selfish act, and claim myself responsible for that. I Think it's in my Point of View It May have saved Gotham and Tore Down Joker's Anarchist Movements, But It also Just absolutely Hurts & Breaks your soul & ego to the Point where your Head wants to Not let this happen, but your Heart says otherwise, As If the Audience felt the Backstabbing Emotions of seeing Batman doing this act just like Gordon, and His Son, I feel as if Two Sides of My self-saying this Decision Is:
Light Side: This Had To happen because it was the only way to Undo the Damage of Jokers Crimes, and that Harvey Died a Hero, Not the Hero Gotham Deserves but the Hero They Needed.
Dark Side: This Decision is Wrong, Batman Claiming that he committed the Crimes That Harvey Dent really committed is going to be regretful, this Lie of Harvey Dent being a Hero will one day eventually fall apart, and Gotham will have no other Hero to save them than Batman. because Batman is the REAL HERO!!!!

This scene I think perfectly encapsulates why Nolan was the best director to ever direct batman. He really understood the core of what makes the character special better than anyone else. Sure he made some mistakes along the way, like blowing up the league of shadows and stuff, but for the most part he translated batman's core ideas to the screen. The first was the no killing, which Burton and Snyder both ignored, but also the fact that batman is more than a man. He is a symbol. This scene perfectly demonstrates that. If he was just a guy fighting crime, he would have tried to do everything he could to not connect it to him. But he knew that someone had to take the blame. Harvey couldn't, the city looked up to him too much. Gotham still needed a police commissioner (that wasn't corrupt) so batman knew it was him. He, unlike Gordon or dent, didn't have a face. He was a symbol. Previously, that symbol was a nightmare of criminals and a beacon of hope to the innocent of Gotham, because that was what they needed. But priorities changed, and now that name had to be ridiculed and hated so that dents legacy could be intact, free to inspire Gotham in a way the batman never could. As the movie said, dent was the white knight, the one that had to remain pure for Gotham, but batman was the one that was whatever Gotham needed him to be. A dark knight. In the next movie, he once again must inspire and protect Gotham when Harveys legacy is tarnished and can't do that anymore. Nolan understood this better than anyone, which is why I believe he is the greatest director of batman, and why I think this movie is the greatest of all time. I hope Matt reeves can reach this level of understanding of the batman.

I think Nolan also understands the notion that one can’t be the hero AND have the glory. In that sense, Bruce’s virtue is truer because he doesn’t stand to gain a public relations benefit for his work as Batman. He willingly tarnishes the symbol to secure Gotham’s future.

Christian Bale's Batman, was the best Batman I've ever seen, At the time DC was badly famous with the hero, because of some ridiculous films like Geoge Cloney's, Christian Bale's Batman was not only successful at the box office how he raised the hero and brought Batman back to fame again.

Wow. 14 years since this came out. Nothing will ever compare to seeing this on the big screen for the first time. I was a Batman fan growing up. I read comics my parents deemed appropriate, I watched the animated series, collected the toys, saw all the movies. Seeing Batman realized like this, starting with Batman Begins. No words can describe the feeling my 13 year old self had watching this at the midnight release.
