    Just one thing to add re: truss rod adjustment. Always ALWAYS loosen it first. Just in case it is already as tight as it will go, you don’t want to strip or worse, snap your truss rod. 🤘🏿

    Piece of advice: When you're setting up the amp's EQ, and when you adjust pedals, or any piece of gear, make sure you're in the middle position of your guitar, for a couple of reasons: one, it's the middle ground of your pickups (in other words, both pickups are active, or for a Strat the middle pickup is active), and two, if you do a lot of pickup switching, you want to have a sound where all the pickup settings sit well with the amp and the gear. Also, tone at 9 (for those with audio taper pots), so it's not shrilly but it has some clarity. If it sounds good in the middle position, more likely it will sound good in any position.

    Great tips, and great to see R.J. on here. I have seen a couple of luthiers say that you should look at the neck from the playing position in order to assess the degree of straightness / curvature. Apparently this is because gravity will skew the true state of the neck if you turn the guitar so the neck is facing upwards, like R.J. does at 2.16 here.

    So awesome you guys are together in vids. BUT i disagree with "buy cheap cables that you'll just resolder". A lot of cheap cables break in the middle of the cable and then they're useless. Getting great 1/4 Jacks and solid cableware by the foot is how you get great cables for cheap money.
    I learned a lot from the rest of the video though! Great stuff Rhett and RJ...you guys are legends.

    One thing that wasn’t mentioned in the setting up amp EQ was the news to dovetail with the bass player. Does he love the low low? Then, dial YOUR bass down. Does he love that treble? Dial YOUR bass up Midrange is our home habitat as guitar players and since our instrument is so flexible sonically it behooves us to work with our band mates:)

    The distance from the nut to the 12th fret should be equal distance from the 12th fret to the point the strings go over the bridge, contact point. Its really that simple.

    • @taopagan
      @taopagan Před 5 lety

      Not so sure about that...I've heard that that is the formula to determine a guitar's basic scale length. But as regards setting up a guitar, I think there is also something called compensation and it is also a factor.
      I think it has to do with how, as we move up the neck, we have to stretch the strings exponentially more in order to press them down against the frets. Also, it seems, more compensation is required for the thicker strings than for the thinner ones.
      I'm not an expert, but I suspect there must be a need to compensate for some sharpening, more so the thicker the string, as we fret notes up the neck. Otherwise, why do we slant the bridge, for example, on an acoustic guitar? Why not make all of the strings exactly the same length?

  • @EphICanIMite

    Go with a Soldering Station, not just an Iron. You can adjust the level of heat depending on the size of wire/eyelet needing soldered and a Soldering Station will hold that heat level better.

    Over unders. Yes. "Please don't help" is something I tell people who don't get this. Multicores are unforgiving. Letting beginners know where and how to adjust truss rods is a dangerous thing. Guitar techs are a safer idea. Getting a new guitar looked at by a trustworthy luthier can sort out heaps of issues. Dressing frets and adjusting truss rods and saddles and intonation is a real skill and best left with people who do this full time. The magic spot in a warned up valve amp is such a sweet place to sit it can make my skin shiver. Flick the pick to the cute guy in the third row, The click your fingers flick gets better distance...Thanks for an entertaining commentary.

    Hi Rhett, related to the EQ dialing, could you please do a video about setting your tones for at-home playing vs on stage? I tend to do shows where there are too many bands to allow a sound check and end up taking a few songs before I finally get the tones I heard in my head during rehearsing with my band at home.

  • @Hoagiemon

  • @eugenemccool3579
    @eugenemccool3579 Před 4 lety

    Tip/FYI:
    If you “lengthen” the string, when you are adjusting the intonation, you will cause/make a kink in the string, that will not allow the string to ring the same as when it has no kink/true. And, when you put a new string on, you’ll have to re-adjust your intonation. But, it should be fine, then. Because, you’ll, more than likely, be “shortening” the string. And, any kink will be on the non-ringing side of string (“behind” the bridge).

    I tell people about the amp thing all the time especially with fenders. Another thing I say is guitars don’t have to be on 10 all the time. 10 is the highest you can go and only can go backwards from there. It’s like starting to climb at the top of a mountain. Just because you have 10 levels of volume doesn’t mean you have to use them all at once, save 10 for when it counts.
