its navigating by starlight and the tapping and crouching is the ancient chinese technique. you know when they lay down and put their ears on the ground.

The spoons are there so the observers know where the burrows are... they are white so they reflect infrared very well, they stick in the sand easy, and they are cheap

A lot of Spiders use vibrations to some degree. Usually to detect prey or a threat. The web also is their vibration detection system.

+Alex Mills I highly doubt vibration would be a reliable source of navigation... Winds and shifts in the sand among other things would totally change the sensitivity of the vibrations, especially at such a length from home. While they could certainly use it to find hollow areas and thus animals in tunnels (much like we tap walls and listen to find studs) I can't fathom vibration working to keep the spider on track especially because that would assume the spider goes to the exact spot it tapped on before in order to verify it is going the right way. All spiders to my knowledge "smell" through their feet. I'd imagine using a sort of "chem trail" - that is, olfactible traces left behind by other animals, in order to track this female would be more probable. It could also mean the habit laying low to the ground is implemented to produce its own pheromone "bread crumbs" of Hansel and Gretel fame thus allowing it to follow his own scent back to his lair. This wouldn't be that remarkable - MANY insects smell with their feet and many are known to use this trait as a navigation tool (ie ants). Just an idea.

The White Lady Spider, when hunting , primarily feasts on Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Avocado Toasts
Here in 2023. This spider has a luxurious home, with metallic pillars with blinking lights on top of them & a fabulous art statue of a spoon.
I love how this was made by showing us how it was made!

Look up trapdoor spiders ;) They make door out of silk, then cover it so it perfctly blends in enviroment. These doors are also very well made, allowing spider to exit/enter very very fast.

Once there was a spider, sitting at home. An object crashes into his house, while he's writing a tome. He goes to investigate, getting up from his ponder. He's quite lonely, "why," he wonders.
Yet there, in the darkness, he spotted something strange. A spoon! it's indent with much range. "It's human, I guess," he thinks very angrily. Why would these men ruin his sanctity?
Yet there, in the distance, he saw a familiar thing. Another spoon? In a place quite away?
And there, and then, he had quite a thought. "If my hole was specifically noted, other species's might not"
My goodness! A mate! He thought with a crash. How great a relationship? How long will it last?
So he ran to the spoon, his heart filled with love. And met a lady, beautiful as a dove.
He walked towards her, expressing his interest. And she yelled at him madly, he hadn't expected this!
He ran quickly home, guided by the spoon. And went back to writing his tome, setting humanities doom.

@@Sodasaman I know it was a joke but I may as well answer it, no, unlike Harvestemen (the wonky-leg spider-look-alikes, also arachnids) spiders do not have sexual parts like ours, that's what makes a male spider's life so much worse, he don't even get sum fuk, instead he basically hands over a vial with sperm in it.
On the other hand, the previously-mentioned Harvestmen DO have bits very close to ours, and they experience a good feeling from sex for sure, and the males can shake a female's sensory leg in some species to entice her to go for a second round. There is also a very funny 99mil. years-old amber with an erect harvesteman trapped in it.
They aren't called "Daddy" Long-legs for nothing.. So in short, harvestemen have pretty nice sexual lives and spiders have none and risk loosing their life over it lol, but there is a con, Harvestmen, just like most able males, have to fight each other for a female and it's not great and they do loose limbs, which unlike spiders they do not molt back, luckily they got 8 so it's not so bad lol. For some reason science is not really interested in harvestemen, probably because they don't have as much of a variation, generally-speaking and they are non-venomous, so you can't strike it rich with some painkiller or whatever developed from venom you extracted.
