- Coverage from WBRE/NBC of 1999/2000 New Years Celebration from New York City. Clip covers the 6 Minutes before and after the 2000 changeover. Sting was the NBC star entertainment.
For those too young to remember, 2000 was celebrated as the "new millennium" [many argue 2001 as the start] and there was excessive anxiety of Y2K (computer bug) problems; media hyped the possible scenarios. While security issues were a concern, nothing of the magnitude of what happened the summer of 2001 was thinkable. People were concerned if their ATMs, computers, TVs -- even their cars would work as the date changed. Nothing happened.
It's worth noting that people were overly confident of the economy, riding the sugar high of the dot com era. Stocks and their "wealth effect" were daily topical conversation with everyday people. Around the turn of the year, the NASDAQ was 4069; peaking March 2000 at 5132 before crashing soon after. Recession followed in early 2001 prior to 9/11.
I remember this. I was in college. It was a very cool time.
Thank you so very much for posting this video !! I remember it like yesterday i video taped it but misplaced from moving around. It was a New year's like none other !!
I was born in Wilkes-Barre. Also I was six months old, and I lived about 30 minutes from Wilkes-Barre. However, when New Years Eve came I was not in the area. During New Year’s Eve I was in Hawthorne NJ, where my Grandparents lived at the time. I never knew how big of a deal this was, but it seemed to be a great deal back in NEPA
WBRE-TV(NBC) happens to be in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre,PA area.
happy 2000 everyone happy new year

There was a year 0 between 1 BC and 1 AD that's why 2000 was the start of the 3rd Millennium. If that wasn't the case then it would have been 2001 that was a big celebration.

Basically 21 century started in 2001
Wilson Tomas No, your wrong. It started in 2000 because there was a year 0. Despite what some people say it was 2000 years from the year 0.
