OUTER BANKS HIKING: Jockey's Trail - 50 Miles to Virginia | Day 3

- Jockey's Trail spans 50 miles from Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, North Carolina to the Virginia border. The route connects multiple trails and multi-use paths through the coastal towns of Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores, Duck, and Corolla, culminating at the northernmost point of Carova. Primarily intended as a hiking route, much of it can be done on a bike as well.
This is my third day on the route, having picked up the bike where I stashed it at Pine Island Racquet & Fitness Center the afternoon before. Stage 3 goes from there to the Historic Corolla Park, following along NC 12 the whole way. Aside from a short road walk (or bike) section, much of it is on sidewalk under the shade of oaks. Ocean Atlantic Rentals is just across the road from Corolla Village so I was able to drop off the rental bike there and take a few hours to tour the light house, maritime museum, Whalehead Club, and Wildlife Education Center.

Beautiful - Another section that can be ridden and then have time for food and entertainment at the end of the day. Sweet!
Absolutely! It was a nice easygoing bike ride even on that cruiser, and with beautiful scenery. I kept wanting to head over to the beach, but wanted to allow enough time in Corolla Park. I didn’t get a very early start and the arcades might’ve slowed me down a little.. ;) Past the Nags Head Town Trail you could ride the whole way and stop at whatever side adventures you like. Day 4 you’d need a fat tire bike for the beach and still take the tide into consideration. We ended up finding a different way to tackle that stage, though. It was a fun adventure!

Thanks! Yeah I had a blast in there! I remember if you were barefoot at Long Beach pier and your feet were wet, some of the arcade games would give you a shock lol.. 40 years later and I still went for Pac-Man 😀

I recorded it but haven’t gotten around to finishing the edit. I’ll get to it eventually! 😅 I was masking a great deal of emotional distress on that hike - about an hour before I started on day one, I heard from back home that my favorite dog / best friend / hiking buddy had passed away unexpectedly.
I keep trying to decide if it’s something I should mention in the final video or not. That certainly had a lasting effect on me and made the editing more difficult. By day 4 I was really starting to struggle with it since I knew I was close to facing the reality of it when I headed back home.
Aside from that, 2023 was a tough year for me, so that’s what is taking me so long. I’m doing much better nowadays! :)
@@pleasantfiction I appreciate your vulnerable and honest reply! I think you should definitely mention your best buddy and you can even commemorate your pal in your final video. Because a walk, a hike, a camino of sorts is a good time for reflection on life in general! My son and I are taking this route next weekend, based on large part from your guidance! I think we will just have to wing day 4, mostly on the beach, I guess :)
@@carolynjackson1729 What I did for day 4 was catch a ride with one of the horse adventure tours in Corolla. They agreed to drop me off at Corova Beach Park & Boat ramp and pick me up on their last run. From there it was a few miles up Ocean Pearl Rd (sand) to the trail that leads to the monument, and back.
This was probably the easiest way, basically skipping the long beach walk by taking the horse tour truck. Otherwise, with nowhere to camp up that way, it’s a long out and back and mostly on the beach or sandy road.
However you do it, have fun and enjoy!
