- In 2021 I switched to a low carb diet. This is my low carb backpacking food loadout - the low carb food I’ve been taking this year and loving it! Low carb is not for everyone and I’m not advocating that you should go low carb for backpacking. Check with your doctor before you change your diet.

If you know of any additional companies that make the dehydrated backpacking meals that are low carb please list them in the comments. 👍
Sorry but thisis dangerous nonsense.. You are putting people at isk, carbs & fats are esential energy for hiking. There are a number of conditions which can develope when not eating properlly while exeting yourself. Anyone on the trrail avoiding carbs is a liability to themselves and others. At the end of day food = fuel and carbs are best fuel over sugars and fats which have thier uses.
I buy Thrive Life dehydrated food.
It’s each individual food ingredient.
Then I combine in large zip lock bag for each recipe.
@@robertland2616 thanks! I’ll check them out! 👍
Wow, awesome video bud! I'll check out the store and purchase a Tshirt! Dig the background in the kitchen with the fireplace going. Not too many backpackers talking about low-carb so this is exciting to see! I'll share this video and your wife's shop in my community tab! Great job!
+Dave Off-Grid Thanks Dave! I agree. I only see a few out there that do it. One hiked the entire AT a couple years ago on keto and excelled. An interesting thing is he never had hiker hunger, kept his food around 3k calories a day and didn’t gain or lose a single pound. Sounds like and experiment for someone. He talks about his food he used. Here is a link to his video. czcams.com/video/aZ8XjE5HZ1g/video.html
Nice one dad!
Thanks Abbey 👍
Hello Dan, very good low carb food options for on trail. Very nice shirts.
Thanks John! 👍
Great share. Thank you
You’re welcome! 👍
Thanks Dan! I’m mostly low-carb too. But sometimes I don’t do too good on backpacking trips. That’s some great info. I agree, hot meal please. And going to check out the Etsy shop!
Thanks Deb! It’s not always easy to get low carb foods for backpacking that are also light and shelf stable. At home I’m usually eating only one meal a day (OMAD) and the foods I eat are usually single ingredient or as I call them “real food” like eggs, fish, nuts, veggies, and so on. But they don’t do to well on trail except in the winter. So this loadout was the culmination of me doing a bunch of research to figure out what to take but still keep the carbs low. Some of it is processed but it’s what I could find that 1) I would like and eat and 2) is light. But I’m actually getting more calories, etc. with less than half the weight of before. To give you an example, for a 5 day trip I used to carry 10-12lbs of food for around 2,500-ish calories/day. Now I’m at 6 lbs for 5 days and 3,100 calories/day. Mainly because you get more with less with low carb foods. But also keep in mind that the backpacking trips should be fun and for some it’s vacation so having some surgery foods on trail isn’t bad.
Nice job on your video Dan. It is great to learn about your food options. Cool shirts too. Are we there yet? We are almost there! LOL Nice low carb Keto type options shown. My wife just was diagnosed with prediabetes so we are going to look at these options too along with maybe creating our own vegan type meals that we will freeze dry for our future trips. Take care and have a great day.
Thanks Steve! Finding low carb foods for backpacking isn’t hard. You just have to look on the labels and find what you like. Also, making your own meals and dehydrating then would be your best option. The dehydrated meals you buy are getting very expensive. Most are close to $14-$15 per meal. Ouch! Plus meals you make yourself provably taste better. 👍
A great breakdown on low carb options! Been doing the lowcarb/keto lifestyle since 2019. I'm a big fan of Ultima Electrolytes. The All American works burger is delicious.
Thanks! Low carb has been a game changer for me. I’ll take a look at Ultimate Electrolytes! 👍
Great and helpful video - will be checking out shop too. Is the spreadsheet you are using available anywhere?
Tried to go low carb during AT section hike but didn't have the energy. I can feel energy boost about 1.5 hours after eating carbs when blood sugar is elevated then body produces insulin to create energy. That Skippy peanut butter is an exception, gets into your blood stream almost immediately and gives instant energy. Take about 6 TBSP's worth when I'm sluggish going up a mountain and the amount of energy that PB gives me is significant. Since I know Skippy is anything but Keto, I don't eat it the rest of the year. Went back to carbs during hikes. My go to breakfast is Cereal + Dried Blueberries + 1/3 cup NIDO in freezer bag, add water, shake, instant milk & cereal. Have meat & cheese for supper since I am done for the day. Extra sharp cheddar & Parmesan keeps well. Mixed nuts for snacks. For lunch, I like those Uncrustables PB&J sandwiches or bars with PB on them.
So far low carb is working well for me on trail. As far as peanut butter it is my favorite. Love it. It I keep it so I still stay under my carbs for the day.
I like your shirt. Canoeing there is basically the same but with different overtures. Paddling along and asking a guy fishing ...How far to the boat ramp , about a mile. I reality it's always a lot , a lot , more. Here in Florida due to the heat and humidity I like a Tortilla with peanut butter and I add a healthy portion on chopped Spanish Olives to it. Or Pita brad with the same mix in it. Not low carb but it makes a great lunch both on the water or hiking.
It always seems closer than it actually is. Lol. And I noticed the closer you get the longer time seems to spread out. Wraps are good and they make low carb ones as well. I love peanut butter. My favorite. One thing that is good, but doesn’t sound good, is peanut butter and bacon on a wrap. Or even peanut butter and pepperoni on one. I fort last heard of them and thought it sounded gross but I tried it and they are both amazing.
@@backpackingadventures4813 ... Bacon and Pepperoni goes with everything and is darn good just by themselves. The Olives ( Green with Pimento chopped up ) with peanut butter offer the salt to complete the flavor.
I like the video. My hardest part has always been choosing food to take. Is your spreadsheet available to download.
Thanks! I always had a hard time figuring out what to take. It usually took a good bit of time and then I had to go get it. The last couple years I figured out that if I take the same food all the time that I didn’t have to think about it. My laziness coming through. 99% of what intake I get at a grocery store and the other are just the meals that I order so it’s easy enough for me to stock pile my backpacking food. I’ll get different things when I go to the store if I remember. That way, when I want to go on a trip I know what food to take and have it right there. Real easy. Again, my laziness coming through. As far as the dehydrated meals I order them in like sample packs if they have them because they are now getting expensive. If I wasn’t low carb I wouldn’t buy them any more. I would just get Knorr Pasta/Rice Sides, instant potatoes, Ramen, and Mac & Cheese from the grocery store instead of $15 backpacking meals. All with the same calories but for a fraction of the cost.
As far as the spreadsheet, that was born out of me sitting down and just figuring out on paper low carb options. It was just to see the nutrition compared to the weight so I could figure out what to take. It isn’t available for download.
Yea, I was plenty of these... I'm 100% keto and roadtrips and hiking, backpacking etc...Well, I have no choice. I also cook and bake a lot of my snacks... (cookies, donuts and more). You can find a lot of great snacks and meals that are low carbs now. Take care
I have a lot of low carb snacks here at the house. You are right, there are a lot to choose from these days. Usually more expensive though. Meals I cook myself but I haven’t gotten into the low carb cookies and snack making yet. Seems a lot cheaper than buying the snacks.
@@backpackingadventures4813 Awesome! I'm not trying to promote anything here haha but you should check my recent keto cookies and donuts recipe video... You will LOVE them... they are stunning good. My kids and whole family go crazy for them. IT IS cheaper and not complicated. Take care (ps...going low carbs and keto...I've lost over 45 lbs)
@@paddle_hike I will definitely check it out. Thanks!

Low carb is healthy and its easier to carry on trails. What are you cooking on fire
I agree. I only really cook on a fire, or even have a fire, in the winter/cold months. In the warm months most of my food doesn’t need to be cooked so most I do is boil water for my dehydrated meals or a hot drink. For that I use either an alcohol stove or a canister stove. Winter I usually have a fire and cook on it. I’ll make some cut of beef, chicken or pork, and some lower carb veggies or eggs bacon, etc.
@@backpackingadventures4813 its a wonderful way of living a life.Take care and enjoy more adventures
@@cupcakescorner7684 thank you! Take care!
Imho the food in this list is not so healthy. Animal protein is missed. Essential grains are missed. Cookies and snacks usually have high cholesterol, bad oils etc. It would be better to eat some real not canned/dried cheese with eggs and chicken(not canned). Some veggies might help for the digestion.
I agree and in my opinion it isn’t the healthiest choices. In fact stated that these choices weren’ the healthiest. This isn’t the food I eat on a daily basis. Just light weight options for my backpacking trips specifically. The key here is light weight. Real food isn’t practical on a 5 day backpacking trip in the summer. Meat will not last 5 days in 90F degrees. Plus real food would be over four times heavier. While I agree with your statements in general and for at home, this is what I came up with for myself for a light weight low carb food load out. I also did a video on how I lost over 100lbs where I go over the foods I eat on a daily basis which are all carbs hike foods. I wouldn’t take them on backpacking trips because it’s not practical and I’m not one of those people that believe if you eat something unhealthy every so often you will die. If you want to take them then that’s great. Each person makes their own choices. Here is the link to the video I mentioned czcams.com/video/ioi8RqpamAI/video.htmlsi=xDUVmejXT1k1XCC8
Essential grains?
Guys and girls, I am a health care worker. CZcamsrs and Twitter people who know nothing about how the body actually work (e.g., chemically and molecularly), will ruin your life in the future. Low carb diets, including keto diets, is a bad idea. Doing a low carb diet while backpacking is a really bad idea. These fad diets are going to increase your LDL cholesterol which will give you cardiovascular disease by permanently thickening your arteries and arterioles. It's not a matter of "if" but literally, when.
I will say, keto diet will improve type 1 diabetes life span longevity because insulin is more tightly regulated within reference ranges. However, for everyone else, DO. NOT. DO. IT. ESPECIALLY if you’re doing it for more than three weeks.
Your weight loss will be from in order: 1) water; 2) muscle; 3) fat (including healthy visceral fat). You literally lose more muscle on a keto diet than fat. You will also get insulin spikes if you’re not careful increasing your carbs when you transition back to a "normal" diet.
Thank you for the information.
I got you, brother! ❤
@Adrian T you’re right, you know better 😂
You are way behind the science Alex.
@@theskyehiker if you have the means to, try getting some cardiovascular tests and blood tests before-and-after you incorporated a fad diet (e.g., months to years). I think you’ll find something unexpected as I’m “behind the science”
A “crude” way to see how it’ll impact you is through measuring your cardiovascular endurance pre and post fad diet (E.g., running).
Thanks Dan! I’m mostly low-carb too. But sometimes I don’t do too good on backpacking trips. That’s some great info. I agree, hot meal please. And going to check out the Etsy shop!
