    THANK YOU! I've been prepping for my server+ exam and couldn't get a straight forward example of a LUN. Thank you for breaking it down and explaining how it works.

      @@InTheShadaux Hi, today I was asked a question by senior, how can I identify data store in SAN or in LUN. Is there any unique number to identify?

    Can a partition span LUNs? Can you have multiple partitions per LUN?

    • @InTheShadaux
      @InTheShadaux  Před 5 lety +1

      In ESXI case you can actually use multiple LUNS to create a single datastore. This is necessary if you need to create a datastore that is larger than the appliance is capable of. On the note if you can have multiple partitions per a LUN. Yes you can. You can actually set how much of the LUN you want to use when you set it up as a datastore in most Hyper-Visors. I look into making a video or two on both of the answers above.

    You say that LUN is like partitions on a normal HDD. The size of all partitions are bounded by the physical size of HDD. So, what does limit the LUN size ? What iss the max capacity in LUN ? can you enlighten me . thanks

    • @InTheShadaux
      @InTheShadaux  Před rokem +1

      LUN size is limited by the size of the array that it is being created upon. If you had an array that was 10TB the maximum size would be 10TB. However I usually leave what I call the 10% Rule open on any array when creating a LUN. So I try to leave 10% of the array left open as some SANS can use that extra space. Meaning on a 10TB array I would not create a LUN over 9TB.

    GOOD one except that I don't like introducing RAID here because it's a different topic and could be easily explained with HA context. Thanks.
