I believe the idea is that Luigi is humming a catchy song to himself to calm his nerves, but his nerves are transforming that song into the booming tune we hear in game.
That's actually a brilliant outlook on that, didn't even think of it like that
if he is low or medium hp the music becomes slower and luigi is more terrified on low hp he sounds like he's about to faint@@ShaneMGD
Another take I saw on it is that the extra hums we can hear in the background are the ghosts singing along, always behind him.
This actually makes a lot more sense when u realize that luigi just whistles without backing instruments in a cleared room when the lights are on and he knows he’s safe i’m that room, but once he steps out into the hallway where ghosts are and it’s dark, he gets nervous and then the music kicks in!
If luigi's hurt, his humming becomes fearful

Yeah, once i noticed that i appreciated the sound design in this game by a whole ton.

Not only does Luigi get more stressed when his HP is low, the music also slows down, almost as if, his heart rate is too…
Wouldn't it be faster cause of adrenaline and pumping more blood because of blood loss? Scary thought though.

pikmin 2 did the same thing, that game has a lot of dynamic music and some of nintendo’s best sound design imo
Ive seen a few people saying that the music slows down on lower hp, so thats actually true then!? This is one of my favorite games of all time and somehow I never noticed this(Maybe its cuz Im too focused on heading straight to the big heart areas lol)

It's crazy how either speeding up or slowing down a song can change the mood so well!I honestly think it's so adorable that Luigi hums the song while going through.

For the best experience, use the Dolphin emulator if you have a decent computer. Additionally you can get the Wii-U's USB to GameCube adapter which functions with the Dolphin emulator, and knockoff gamecube controllers off of Amazon.

@@ShaneMGD there’s a guy that covers a bunch of really cool elements about the game, Swankybox. Even dug up some neat stuff about the beta like how the kitchen ghost worked.

I love how he whistles sometimes and rarely he can hear ghosts singing the part he was humming

I tried thinking about why I prefer the first Luigi's mansion over the sequels, and the sound design has to be one of the main reasons, next to the ghost design. (Other than King Boo, he's always perfect besides the spin-offs)

Something someone pointed out: in the Credits, when it gets to the whistling and you have headphones/earbuds, the left is Luigi, and he whistles fluidly and rather well, Mario in the right actually doesn't whistle the song as well, which is why Luigi laughs and Mario says HEY! :) what an amazing game
Damn I didn't even notice that. 20+ years later and this game still gives me surprises!
Also when you are in the darkrooms not the hallway and pause the game you can hear muffled ghosts sing the theme in the background.
Basically luigi's mansion games make awesome use of leitmotifs
Literally just connected my old GameCube back up after like 4 years and after playing through Luigi’s mansion again I was like “ the sounds Nintendo made for this is so good, it goes so well with it with the atmosphere!”
I love all the music and sounds from the game. Plus the sound effect for finding the gold mouse is beyond satisfying. I also listen to the music in my free time.

I think the best sound effect aside from Luigi humming would have to be the gem collecting sound. It's just so cheery! And makes you feel happy! 😁

My brother play this on the GameCube many years ago and I was so fascinated when I heard Luigi singing I wish more music worked like this then Portal 2 came out and interactive environments and that's the closest we've got back to this since.

Some more details about the correlation between Luigi and the music:
If there's a ghost in the room Luigi's in (not counting hallways), you can hear ghosts humming along to the song.
If the room is lit up after all the ghosts have been cleared out of it, Luigi whistles the song instead of humming it, and he seems to be at ease.
When Luigi's health is low, not only does Luigi sound more scared as he's humming, the music is also slowed down. Not by much, but just enough to notice if you listen closely.
In a lit room with low health, Luigi will stop humming and bend over with shaky breath.
Anither thing I like is that whenever Luigi is outside the mansion, such as in the courtyard, the low strings that play the bass notes of the song are replaced with a harp.
I absolutely love the sound design in this game, easily some of Nintendo's best work tbh

Sound design wise, that's amazing. But for me personally, if I'm rushing from one side of the building to another (which happens a lot in the late game), there's next to no music playing. The silence becomes deafening after a while

I PLAYED THIS GAME SO MUCH AS A KID😂😂
Sometimes when enter in some rooms with ghosts and there's no music, you can hear little strange sounds like it was creatures doing that but if listen carefully you can notice that its the theme song of the game with strange sounds. And also on a different note the game boy horror song slaps.
This game was so expertly designed, I wish they hadn't gone with the cartoony atmosphere of the sequels. I so miss the original's gameplay and atmosphere, but I don't think we'll ever see them again, with LM3 selling like it did.

This was 100% my favorite Nintendo game I absolutely loved this game
I think it’s impressive, I’m pretty sure that song is always playing. It picks up right where Luigi leaves off when whistling or humming. Call out to Mario and Luigi jumps to the next part all in time.

I'd disagree on the jingle being a snippet of the main theme. The Same rhythmic pattern, but the notes are completely different. That motif IS quoted, however, when you grab one of the special keys after defeating an area boss.
