Ray's cellmate learns a prison lesson.
Set within the suburbs of Sydney, Raymond "Ray" Shoesmith (Scott Ryan) is a hitman for hire who makes a life out of balancing his criminal activities with his obligations to friends and family. He tries to be a father to Brittany (Chika Yasumura), his daughter with his ex-wife, Jacinta (Natalie Tran), a loving boyfriend to Ally (Brooke Satchwell), and a good caretaker to his terminally ill brother Bruce (Nicholas Cassim). Ray also covers for his friend Gary (Justin Rosniak) when needed, and follows orders from his boss Freddy (Damon Herriman) without question. Ray deals with criminals and monsters in his own violent way; this behaviour, however, starts to take its toll and affects his relationships.

That translation of 'champ' is definitely a prison thing, but it's also a diminutive like 'sweetie', 'honey' or 'darling'. In Australia it's reserved for boys and it would be predictable for an adult man to take offence or at least feel patronised at being called 'champ'. It would be belittling and, particularly from another Australian man, it would seem intentionally so.
I usually use 'calm down tiger' to calm to wind up a knucklehead. Shows them they are just a little boy full of wind.
Funny thing is over here in Ireland the word champ refers to a food dish, but i call my little boys champ all the time lol

Gday mate ,yes on the inside,"champ" is like calling someone a bitch but has no negative connotations on the outside.

@Ge_o it's not too different from Britain or even Scotland. The Northerners don't like the Southerners.
What do you mean by Queensland? The show is set in New South Wales.
Queenslanders don't like people from South of them, but people South of them don't even think about it.
