I must say, if I had been wearing pearls, they would have been clutched when you said “better than the original”...GASP!!!! I wanted this so bad when I first heard of it, but it wasn’t released in the US right away...in the meantime, I heard some reviews that made me think I can pass on it. NOW I’m thinking I NEEDS it 😂

Tom I bought this Philtre just after this review one month ago. I think I've almost used 1/2 of the bottle! Even my husband could smell it, came home and said the house smelled powdery. Yeh going crazy spraying this one. Can't get enough. Maybe I'll be buying another bottle in a month 💜

Decluttered the original Shalimar EDP a while ago. Purchased this one and I am so in LOVE with this amazing scent. So out of this world GORGEOUS and sensual to me. I have a back up bottle already. I feel happy and heavenly! smelling wearing this, and I respray during the day just to experience the rush of that first spray again and again 🥰 I might order a second back up bottle just because it is beautiful, and I do not want to be without it at any point. Ever.
Oh my....... this sounds like big danger. Parfum Initial was an instant love back in the days and I still have it in my collection. Hopefully I will get a chance to smell this soon. Shops are still closed. How about the lavender top note? I am very fond of the idea. Is it perceivable at all? I have to admit I was a bit worried it might resemble Mon Guerlain in that aspect.

Thanks for your colorful description of this new version of Shalimar. My experience of earlier forms of this classic is just as you describe -- the struggle with the civet and leather. Those notes become quite fusty on my skin. I am wondering how this might work with just a scant touch up of a one note Iris perfume. Your descriptions are the best.

Oh my gosh! When you opened saying that its lovely my heart dropped and then that you described Philtre and now I'm trying to imagine it. It sounds very soft and soothing but I wonder if I'll miss the leather and Incense and oppoponax? I've never tried Shalimar parfum Initial but a cloudy, slightly resinous vanilla sounds so beautiful 😍. Thanks Thomas, this was much awaited for me.

Hi Tom, I think Shalimar aka The temple of love was made to reflect the famous love story of Shah Jahan & Mumtaz for whom he built Taj Mahal which is actually her tomb existing till today in India. It's a famous monument for true love even now, cheers, take care.

I find original Shalimar a bit overwhelming. Too much vanilla to my taste, at some point it starts suffocating me. Now we have Shalimar Philtre which is a completely different story. It is breathtaking! Totally different type of vanilla. It reminds me of Mona di Orio's "Vanille". Does anyone feel the same way I wonder?
I'm not a huge fan on the original purely because of those 'vintage' notes you mention, I do like the souffle though and this one sounds like it would be my kind of Shalimar! Think I'm going to have to try this one! 😁

Hi Andreea. They are both oriental fragrances but do not smell similar at all to my nose. Shalimar smells like bergamot (a citrus), leather and smoky vanilla whereas Samsara (the current version) smells like a bubblegumy synthetic sandalwood with jasmine. I prefer Shalimar by miles, I find the current Samsara a bit screechy, even though if applied sparingly it is lovely. Shalimar is more timeless imo, Samsara hasn't aged particularly well, and this comes from someone who loves old school perfumery. This being said, Shalimar has quite an intense opening and an animalic facet that some people struggle with, so do try both to see where your preference lies :) it does take a few wears to truly appreciate the masterpiece that it is.

But I didnt have the occasion to smell Samsara and right now with the lockdown we face in Germany I wont have the chance to smell it before buying at least a sample. Reading your description I am now really really curious about Samsara because I adore sandalwood in women fragrances❤️ And I totally agree. Whit such timeless perfumes you do need a few times wear in order to really understand the speciality one has.

There are still lots of vintage Samsara bottles being sold for a reasonable price online so if you like the current version chances are you would love the vintage :)
They are nothing alike imo. You said you know Shalimar, so I don’t need to describe it. Samsara is, to my nose, all about jasmine and sandalwood. I’ve never tried the vintage, or the most current. I think the version I had was from around 2012-ish. It’s pretty, but IMO, it just wasn’t very special. It’s definitely worth trying, but I wouldn’t suggest a blind buy.
Samsara is gorgeous! I can’t compare it to Shalimar because unfortunately I have never tried Shalimar. With that being said, I passionately love Samsara and, based on the opinions I have heard, I understand that Shalimar is on another level of classy, timeless and sophistication however, Samsara is very comforting and romantic, very soft and versatile for everyday use and for all ages in my opinion (I first wore it when I was a teenager now I am 41 and planning on wearing it until it’ gets discontinued). It is a little bit powdery due to the sandalwood but it is also relaxing and cozy, I smell a lot of (sweet) rose in it as well, a truly lovely scent if you like ultra feminine fragrances.

I don't smell lavender here, it's way too soft and ambery and fluffy. If it's noticeable on you, it's only gonna be in the opening for a short time.

I certainly don't get much lavender, not enough to mention it as a note. It's citrus and then straight into shalimar fluffy goodness!
