In this country (US), soldiers are sent to war so they can die and we can erect crosses over an undug grave or a monument. The ones that survive outlive their usefulness and are treated as such. As evil as it sounds, saving the wounded in a battle zone has been worse than letting them die - now they just live longer with physical and mental/emotional scars and no honor whatsoever.
The government values soldiers who die for the glory of our nation. Those who return broken and unusable are a burden to the government. It is one of the most paradoxically evil things, to save the life of a broken soldier. You spare what body you can, but destroy everything else.

I was speaking from the position of the government, not a citizen. Soldiers are just another resource for them, like a missile or a rifle or an aircraft. If any of those fail, they research why and discard the the failure if the fault is great enough to threaten the integrity of that particular resource. Looking at soldiers and veterans as people only complicates a simple process. Easier to just think of them as numbers that rise and fall, objects that work or need repair or to be removed from service. Nothing but numbers.
And no, I serve no God. I serve my family, those I love, and my community - in that order. If that is not good enough for whatever God exists (and I live my life as if a God exists), then that God is not worthy of my service. I harbor no judgement in my heart for your beliefs. I honestly feel like people who think America is such a horrible place should travel more. The average pay in Venezuela at the moment is $3 an hour. My Boyfriend was working in Peru recently and one of the locals there bragged how cheap prostitutes are at $5 an hour. The housing and lack of infrastructure in some countries is sad and it makes you realize that what makes America bad is just the attitudes that some people have.
