Another reason why the design was changed can be seen at 3:46. Many of the throws with the old design were landing in a flat angle and then gliding forwards in the ground which put the officials and other athletes in danger. The balance point of newer javelin design meant that the javelins are now sticking to the ground on landing.

Plus just being worried of my trailing legs knee clipping the hurdle meant that it was hard to jump at a perfect height so I was as fast as I could be over the hurdle. My son threw just before Jan and he told me Jan thanked him for getting the crowd to make some noise .Then he stepped up and threw 1 throw 91 plus to qualify the two shook hands and posed for a photo later. A big thumbs up to this because EVERY video I've seen about Uwe Hohn's throw claim the javelin was changed BECAUSE of that throw whereas, as you correctly point out, there had been discussions for some time about 1.) possible changing the weight or 2.) changing the aerodynamics. Uwe Hohn's throw just speeded up the implementation of what was already planned. Changing the weight was decided against because injuries are already an issue in the javelin and increasing the weight would make things infinitely worse.

I wish I knew how to estimate the amount of g forces that throw put on various parts of his shoulder, arm and back because even if you're not on track and field, you can probably just understand intuitively how insane it is that a throw like that doesn't just tear a person's ligaments apart. It blows my mind seeing clips of high-level athletes in slow motion because it just looks so unnatural. They really are practically superhuman.
