    One of the most fundamental aspects of fishing with a bait casting reel is how to properly set up the brakes on them. If you don't have them set correctly, there are really only two options. You will either "back lash" the crap out of your reels, or you will not get the casting distance you want from the reel. This video is a revisit of an older video I produced years ago showing the Shimano SVS infinity braking system. Although this video is specific to that system, it will work with just about all other bait casting reels on the planet.

    Great information! Love the brake system technology available on today’s reels!

    Excellent job on the breakdown of this shimano metanium. Thank you.

    Thank you! I just put a new Metanium MGL on a loomis BJR and took it out. My casting distance was horrible! I almost went back to my Hypermag on my Mojo glass rod. Can’t wait to adjust my internal brakes and give it another try!

      The Metanium is the smoothest casting reel that I own. If you’re casting distance is sucking there’s something up. I hope the stuff in this video helps you get that straightened out. You’ll love it once you figure it out!my favorite reel they have ever made.

    Torn between the hg and the xg. Can anyone provide some insight as to which way to go for universal fishing techniques?

    • @OnAnotherLine
      @OnAnotherLine  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I’d recommend the Hg. It’s a 7 gear ratio and will be a middle ground for most fishing techniques. If you go with the xg, it’s an 8 gear ratio and may be too fast for most techniques.

    Hey I just got the metanium it’s my first baitcaster so I’m alittle lost. I adjusted the spool tension knob so there’s no side to side play while it’s on brake dial number 6 but when I change the brake dial number the spool moves side to side a little but I didn’t adjust tension knob. Is the break dial like a micro adjustment of the spool tension?

    • @OnAnotherLine
      @OnAnotherLine  Před 3 lety

      The Metanium has Shimano’s Svs infinity braking system. That’s what the brake dial is for. That shouldn’t be contacting anything while the spool is stationary even at the 6 spot. It sounds like you have a brake shoe that is contacting the spool somehow. The svs infinity system is a centrifugal system. When you cast a lure, the brake shoes get thrown against the brass sleeve in the side cover. The brass piece in the side cover is Shaped sorts like a cone. As you change the dial, the brass piece moves closer or farther away from the brake shoes. This either increases or decreases the friction on the brake pads as you cast due to the cone shape of the piece. My advice would be to make sure there isn’t a brake pad on the spool that is weirdly installed first. If that’s not the case, put the dial on 3 and adjust the spool tension knob to just barely allow the lure to fall when the spool release is pressed. Allow two brake pads to be loose on the spool and give it a go. The Met does have a MGL spool so it doesn’t take as much effort to cast it. Cast it too hard, even with the brakes set correctly, and you’ll get a backlash.

    I pressed my break down a little to far. I think I broke it. Can it be replaced or do I have to buy a spool?

    • @OnAnotherLine
      @OnAnotherLine  Před 3 lety

      Which brake are you referring to? The plastic ones that are on the spool I assume? If the spool isn't broken you can absolutely replace those plastic brake "shoes" for lack of a better term. You can pick them up from Shimano's website an many of their reels come with extra in the box.

    Dang you have an HG Met B? Can’t find those I want to just buy the main and pinion gears and slow my XG down to a 7:1

    Hey! I have been trying out for casting distance my metanium mgl paired with zodias 7.5MH rod. (inside brakes 2 on, 2 off) Outside brakes set to (2). With 1/2 ounce lure I'm casting max 100 ft with 1 ounce lure I'm casting 120 ft MAX using 12 lb fluorocarbon. Is that about a normal cast distance. What do you think? I'm thinking about returning my metanium mgl.

    • @OnAnotherLine
      @OnAnotherLine  Před 3 lety +1

      You should be getting way more distance than that with a 1oz lure. The spool tension knob isn’t cranked down too tight is it? Is the cast at 100ft smooth? What I mean is, it’s not backlashing is it?

    • @jaysoncayetano2438
      @jaysoncayetano2438 Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the reply! Tension knob is the same the way its dropping is the same for the 1/2 ounce. Which is really I'm not understanding. I'm casting it the same way. No backlash or anything my only concern is the distance, I was kind of expecting more specially coming from Metanium. I'm not really but i'm really thinking of returning it but I kind of don't want to at the same time.

      @@OnAnotherLine have you tried a 10xd on the metanium mgl? Do you think it can handle it. Or I should just swap this for a tranx.

      Don’t worry about it, most people ga e their measuring units all messed up when casting.

  • @manuelmolina1124
    @manuelmolina1124 Před 2 lety

    50 yard cast... lol yeah right... That spool only holds 100 of 12 lb. That spool wasn’t half way gone. You should go to a park, cast heavy bait as far as you can and be amazed and just how far it didn’t go. People seriously have their distances on casts all fucked up.
