24 years later, I still DON'T understand how the Braves lost that World Series... They were CLEARLY the better team. Chipper is dead on! What a freaking great baseball player!
They blew game 4... And the umpire got in the way of a routine foul pop out to Jermaine dye.. jeter got a second chance and a base hit which led yanks to rally
even games 5 and 6 were low scoring games that should have favored Atlanta with Smoltz and Maddux on the mound. Truly the biggest WS collapse to this day (that would have belonged to Arizona in 2001, but they won it).
@@user-ib2kt4oo7i I’m a diehard Braves fan, but we lost it. Momentum is a crazy thing. Once Jeter got on.. then Charlie Hayes hit a dribbler down the line.. then Belliard made an error.. etc. Typical Braves stuff. But one thing NO ONE brings up that I’ll never understand is why didn’t Bobby leave Mike Bielicki in? He struck out the side. Then took him out.
I'm the biggest Yankees fan and I do think the Braves in 96 had the better team..and I have said if David Justice didn't get injured that year they repeat and he prob doesn't leave for Cleveland so who knows
...made a mockery of the game that day..a batters box strike zone. When they ran him out of baseball after the umpire's strike - I didn't feel sorry for him at all.
For years, you couldn’t find the full game on here. Now you can. I used to think the MLB was in on it. Or Gregg sold out to the Mob. But could you imagine the ratings for a Kenny Lofton Braves vs Justice & Grissom World Series? Wow!
John Smoltz said it right-they win the '96 Series they probably win at least one more, probably two. After '96 their psyche was just shot and stayed shot for a decade after.
It really sucks that we blew a 2-0 series lead with the next three games at home, especially since we would have had back-to-back titles but what bothers me even more is that we never made up for it. It would be one thing if we had come back and won titles in say 2000 and 2003 but we haven't even won a single World Series game since this collapse. Four World Series losses to our one World Series title...we need four World Series titles to our four World Series losses.
You guys got the one. I would advise not to forget about that. I'm a Milwaukean, I felt for you guys in 1996, it was like the same old story again considering '91 & '92s tough loses. I'm sure it killed you to hear Joe Buck's call "The Yankees are champions of baseball." in '96. But, like what Chipper said, I thought you guys had the better team.
The year that always kills me is '98. 106 wins and San Diego jumps out to a 3-0 series lead in the NLCS? Like wtf. Not saying we would've beat the Yanks in the WS but we were definitely a better team than the Padres
Definitely the braves had the better team ..You add 2 great rookies in chipper and Andrew..They dominated the Yankees in the first 2 games..Then it all came apart..Should have won that title..
Dude listed other pitchers from other teams as reasons they couldn't get it done while the Braves themselves literally had 3 Hall of Famers in their lineup. 💀 💀
Hell yes they shouldve won in 96...they were down 3 games to 1 in the NLCS and won those 3 straight games AND the first 2 games in New York of WS then come home and couldnt even win 1 of the 3 at home, that was bad
The Padres don’t get enough credit for taking out both 102 win Houston (3-1) and 106 win Atlanta (4-2) but the 1998 Braves might have been the best team they’ve ever had. They allowed 39 fewer runs than the next best team and all 5 of their starters won at least 16 games. Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz were all dominant and healthy. John Rocker and Kerry Lightenberg were the best bullpen combo in the league. They had 4 players hit at least 31 home runs. They had almost 3x the dWAR of the next best defense in the National League. Getting swept in the World Series by the Yankees in 1999 was more of a formality than a chance at revenge. Atlanta would’ve had a much better shot against the 114 win ‘98 team. San Diego had a great season and an even better postseason. They deserved to be in that World Series. Baseball fans were still robbed of the World Series of a lifetime.
As a Padres fan who attended Game 4 of what ended up being a mostly lackluster WS, I'd have to say this is fair. But I'll go to my grave knowing that the Game 1 2-2 pitch to Tino Martinez was _very_ clearly strike 3, right down the middle, well above his knees crossing the plate, and he had no business still being in the batters box to hit that grand slam on the next pitch. That game and the whole series could've turned out very differently if Rich Garcia wasn't the Yankees' 10th man on the field (it certainly wasn't the only Yankees postseason game that he was, either. See: Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS).
That 96 series was a killer. Ron Gant was safe at second. Wohlers should've stuck with his fastball!!! Ughhhh, "TIE GAME" still haunts me to this day....
Braves weren’t the better team ... that Yankees team went on to win 3 more titles with some added pieces to that core. No one in 96 knew how clutch Jeter, Petite, Bernie, & Posada was in October. Also the Yankees had a much better bullpen in October. Wholers giving up a 3 run HR to Leyritz in game 5, petite’s defensive play .... the Yankees won that game with skill & with a deeper team. Game 6 wasn’t close ... had it gone 7 maybe the Braves win it off experience but they lost 4 in a row. Who loses 4 games in a row and is considered the better team? Lmao Smh come on chipper this isn’t a 1 game playoff. You lost 4 out of 6
Nah, Atlanta were better. Clutch is a glorified way of saying lucky, and the Yankees would get plenty more of it in subsequent postseasons as anything close to a 50-50 call would go their way, since MLB had them to be the chosen ones.
Oh, no no..you do realize we played the Yankees in '96 with Justice on the DL? The same guy y'all needed in 2000 to win it. Yeah, him. In '96 we were stacked and experience against a young scrappy upstart Yankees squad. We blew y'all out in Games 1, 2 in Yankee Stadium without Justice. Hats off, y'all won but no way were you the better team top to bottom.
@@fredball8240 history says differently and if you think a team was a championship team only because of Justice thats insane lol. He was the 20th most important player during that 4 ring run in that span lol. They won the world series in 5 games dude lol. No one needed Justice lol.
@@greeneyedspick Dude you're beyond dumb. Why you bringing up World Series championships after this? This is about 96. The Braves were the better team. David Justice said it. If we had Mariano Rivera in our bullpen,we would've won more.

As an old soul die hard Yankees fan. I'd say the 1996 World Series was absolutely wild n crazy. That's why I like the Braves and the Yankees.

Always an excuse. Finally we got a Braves team that did what no one thought they could and exceeded even the most far reaching expectations.
