- Chicago Music Exchange hosted Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band for a CME session on March 14th 2013. Enjoy watching "King's Highway", one of the 3 songs they performed live during their master class.
Blade was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. The first music he experienced was gospel and songs of praise at the Zion Baptist Church where his father, Brady L. Blade, Sr., has been the pastor for fifty-two years. In elementary school, music appreciation classes were an important part of his development and at age nine, he began playing the violin. Inspired by his older brother, Brady Blade, Jr., who had been the drummer at Zion Baptist Church, Brian shifted his focus to the drums throughout middle and high school.
During high school, while studying with Dorsey Summerfield, Jr., Blade began listening to the music of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Elvin Jones, and Joni Mitchell. By the age of eighteen, Brian moved to New Orleans to attend Loyola University. From 1988 through 1993, he studied and played with most of the master musicians living in New Orleans, including Johnny Vidacovich, Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Bill Huntington, Mike Pellera, John Mahoney, George French, Germaine Bazzle, David Lee, Jr., Alvin Red Tyler, Tony Dagradi and Harold Battiste.

Cowherd's Solo...
Who else keeps coming back to watch this? It’s 2022 and it never gets old.
Can't even count how many study sessions I've gone through with Blade in the back, it just hits different.
Man, I just posted the video on FB again with the comment "perfection never gets old". Ha!
I've lost track, hermano--this is far more than just a BB & TF performance--this is Truth & Beauty personified!
Me
Back again and I saw him live at the Space in Evanston that same weekend
I saw Blade play when I was 18, and i was so blown away I decided to learn drums. I’m a professional touring drummer now, 13 years later. Thank you Brian.
Same here except I didn't learn much but still watch him in awe, I ry to play sometimes and imagine myself being 1/100th as good. Thank you Brian!
Let us watch! :D
i saw blade too, as a teen…
great movie!
The manner in which Brian plays here is for me the complete fusion of technique and feeling, 100% emotional, musical feeling.
I thank you, sincerely.
Also, every member of this band is completely ‘in it’, every solo and conversation between horns has something to say to me, like the solos on kind of blue. Audio and video technics on point, and the tuning of the piano adds an extra charm! Come back to it once in a while, ‘to live in it’ (as Brian puts it so beautifully at the end of this video: czcams.com/video/lz4B5rMuRSA/video.html)
Love and peace!
i hardly dare to comment on the internet but i have been playing this video for over 4 years now and it still is one of the most enjoyable musical explorations to date. Blade brings me to tears (of JOY) every time i glimpse at the screen and my ears just cant stop falling in love with dynamic, creative & sublime playing feel this godsend of a drummer performs here. Add the groove, melodic interplay & musicianship of the entire band and this composition just killed 100% of all your stress, hypertention & migrains as if we never had any..... Pure bliss!
i've lost track of how many times i've watched this
Sameeeeee
Dude same and I only just found it yesterday
30+ maybe?? Rare combo of comforting melody and virtuosity. Still so great
Back again!
Guys cure. God bless em
As a drummer who just found Brian Blade, I'm deeply stunned. He's so innovative and has a truly unique style. A nice reminder that there are so many things you can do with this instrument!
There are those moments where everyone wants to be a guitarist, or a saxophonist, or a pianist, or a bassist (at least we tell ourselves that). The moments where you listen to someone who really showcases the beauty of their instrument--its versatility, its power, its very soul. Brian does that, in this performance, and really all the time. He really makes you want to be a drummer. He gives you the breadth, and the depth, of the drums.
Marcus Schiebold yeah but when you're already a drummer, Brian makes me want to fucking quit !
Why ? On the contrary you should be willing to work your instrument even more to reach that level
Lachlan Maclean I’m dead bro😂
@@nathleflutiste exactly!
There is no doubt that he is the most soulful and important drummer of our time.
Blade is for me the model for playing the drums musically and as an INSTRUMENT. There are many greats in drumming, both past and present, that people can point to, but in my eyes this guy is right up there at the top.
Who said he wasn't at the top?
It is theoretically possible that there is a 20 minute clip on youtube as good as this....but no way there is one better. This is absolutely stunning - pure unadulterated joy.
I can hardly keep up with the dynamics as a listener. And it fills my ears with the best joy. 🙏
Best drummer in this universe. I do love many other masters, but mr blade is just beyond instrument
The beauty of jazz is one of catharsis. It allows you to both open and explore the holes of your soul. And it will also heal them. Thank you, Brian and Fellows.
Thumbs up if this changed your life just now.
Barber 82 same. I tear up every time. Reminds me I’m alive every time. It’s basically a church service to me at this point. I’m a Fellowship believer, yes indeed.
How about now? ;))
anything one does changes their life (I just started the video, please forgive me)
seriously
The first time, I saw this video, I was 15 years old and it blew me away. Must have watched it hundreds of times in the nine years since.
I saw Brian Blade play in 2008 with Daniel Lanois. I recognized him from drum magazines, and was amazed when i finally saw and heard him. I remember when THIS video came out, more than 10 years ago, and was blown away again. And i STILL am so inspired and impressed with his playing. Its such a great influence to have
Still the best video on CZcams.
Blade is so damn amazing. Watching him you see that in this moment this man is grateful to be alive, and there's nothing that's going to stop him from playing the s#!t out of this music with these other musicians. He plays with a kind of ease and wild, expressive energy that's contagious. His musical choices and gestures show how deeply attentive he is to everything going on around him. So so good.
Well put.
speaking as a drummer and music lover: this is one of the best things i have ever listened to on YT and in general.
Also as a drummer, I'm convinced this is the greatest jazz video ever.
It was very well recorded and mixed.
Also a drummer, and feel the same.. this one gives me goose bumps every time
`Also a musician, and this video truly is probably my favourite video on youtube. It's the most real thing i've ever seen.
Here are five gentlemen who GET IT.
Amen brother!
This is why we love being drummers!
That bass solo at 7:31 is amazing. The highlight of this piece.
This is like the shortest 20 minutes I've ever had.
Somehow the drum solo brings tears to my eyes, never experienced this listening to drums before.
nenissaK I know exactly what you mean...it's like he told a heartfelt story without saying a word
Joseph Romain
Exactly.. and even just Looking at him play is an experience, not to mention the playing itself.
You don't know how i relate to you guys
I read this like three minutes in and had to come back and agree with you after. Fuck me.
Brian is worlds ahead of everyone else..
It's ground-breaking. It's going to take a decade for others to catch up.
Brian is one of the best drummers in any genre now. Seen him live a few times with Wayne and words cannot describe it. Unbelievable
No licks here, just pure emotion and reaction. This is to me what music is. Communication with the other players and not some rehashed licks that get repeated when one feels to need to show off.
With the exception of 04:55 where Jon Cowherd actually plays 'the lick' ;)
I was more referring to Blade not playing licks he's worked out. His playing to me is very in the moment.
He's definitely got licks. Love drummers that finesse the sound out of the kit. Guy has got incredible time and dynamics . I like how he thinks. Reminded me of Tony (Williams) in a couple sections :-)
they all have licks. thats like 1/3 of all jazz. you work them out so that theyre second nature when you need them.
If thinking that makes you enjoy it more, then yes.
Everytime I play this I cry when that saxophone blows halfway thru the song! it’s music to my soul
Still playing it in 2024.
Mr Blade is so musical, yet so explosive got that old school vibe so much soul in his playing amazing artist.....
watching this made me cry furiously due to happiness caused by the music alone
Man is Brian at the top of his game. Not a note wasted.
the crowd audibly gasping at 4:24 after that monster hit gets me every time
One of my favourite videos on CZcams. I'm 34 now. Here's hoping I can still watch this when i'm 94.
Didn't know this guy.
i'm simply stunned by his ideas on drums. The way he plays is a percussionist revolution of what I knew so far.
+jordian me I couldn't agree more. I spent a decade studying jazz percussion, and I played with and saw some talented cats, avant garde players who blew my mind. I'm not exaggerating when I say that hearing Brian Blade play changed everything for me. It threw all the notions about playing I had out the window. I almost wish I could go back in time and unlearn all I learned - my education is so conventional, and his playing so original, that I feel like I have a mental roadblock that keeps me from understanding.
He honestly deserves a MacArthur Fellowship.
+jordian me Mr. Blade has been around for a minute. His style is kinda of a mix between Philly Joe Jones and Dave Tough....
That's a very interesting, insightful and wise point to make and one we should all take note of. Institutions have their place, but the danger is, it can kill creativity, style and individualism. I have met many drummers who wished they never went to a music college/uni and felt their player was better before they did. The problem today is, there isn't the work to go round and so you end up at college as opposed to just getting out there and playing. There really is no substitute for real world playing in tandem with your own practice. Don't get me wrong, there are always the exceptions, Erskine being one of them but hey, he's Erskine :-)!
No matter what scale, that is true. Just LOOK at him playing!
So chuffed to hear this from someone else Jordian.
I saw him years ago with Redman, McBride, and Meldhau and it was a revelation for me. I'm a singer/guitarist whose favorite drummers were Bonham, Copland and Beauford at the time. Then along comes Blade and he instantly became my new favorite drummer. He played drums, to my ear, melodically (apparently he tunes them particularlly?). It was no surprise that he was a songwriter too. I think the young Marsalis kid might be of the same mindset and need to check him out more.
Anyways. I couldn't put my finger on it but he's my favorite contemporary jazz drummer to this day.
I mean that bass solo is just wow... And especially after the drum solo the joy on Brian's face caused by the simple yet incredibly groovy bass line is just so much fun to watch. Also the consistency of Jon Cowherd is right on! What a performance... I'm in Love!
It’s amazing how Brian Blade listens to everything at the same time. Just when I think he’s listening and comping the soloist I notice how locked in he is with the bassist at the same time. And he predicts the ends of peoples phrases so well. Two brains!
His cymbals sound amazing
Anthony- Elijah for real! Even though that left ride is keyholed to hell it still sounds incredible
@@tylerblake3596 - kinda makes me not sweat so much my 22'' ride's condition lol . Probably better shape than his . Just checked ... oh hell yeah ! That ride of his is beyond keyholed . That bell is CRACKED ! He is a master musician .
@@tylerblake3596 it probably looks like that BECAUSE it sounds incredible
they sound perfect
That cracked and keyhole cymbal sounds amazing, the way it washes and stops abruptly when he plays is so damm good.
It’s horrible that I’ve only just discovered this now. So amazing
I watch this every week and every time I find new amazing touches in each and every crevice of this performance. Brian and the Fellowship are absolutely suffused with genius. Stunning.
My brain feels lost and enlightened right now. This is untouchable jazz. Brian Blade plays like he IS the music.
This is one of the best performances I've ever seen
Wonder how I've been able to spend so many years without hearing about that great great drummer... Seems that Papa Jo Jones is back... that smile, that communicative joy while really "playing" with his drums and cymbals... and mates!! Amazing, almost drove me to tears.. of joy and pleasure, of course!!
I got to see these guys live in a small venue, a recital hall. They played for about 50 minutes, and it was an incredible 50 minutes!
this whole performance is astounding. Brian Blade is a pleasure to watch and that Spizz he's playing is MMMHHMMMMMM.
I defy anyone to watch that and not bop your head! Impossible!
A warm and vibrant conversation between instruments where everyone is in complete and utter agreement
Love how the drummer and bass player are so into the groove
I love how Brian seems to anticipate and support every new feel/theme introduced during the bass solo. Musicianship at its finest, in these twenty minutes.
I saw Brian with Christian McBride’s band at the University of Maryland. Brian Blade's playing was totally unbelievable. He was playing jazz, soul, funk, European classical, Latin, and African rhythms in one cohesive mix. It was incredible!
It’s 2023 and still ongoing Jazz therapy. :-)
The piano’s re-entry at 14:31 never ceases to get an “Mmmmm” out of me
This has moved me emotionally to the point of tears more than once. Thanks Brian for everything you’ve done for me
Thank you for the music dear Fellowship! And thank you Chicago music exchange for sharing this video for all of us who couldn't be there. It's one of the most honest, from the heart performances I've ever listened to. This keeps my heart still beating!
Watching and listening to Brian Blade, I feel there's hope for us after all.
Easily one of the most inspired jazz pieces I’ve ever heard. The flow and roll of it. The bass and drum are so incredibly solid.
Brian is an absolute master of building tension and then has the most beautiful resolution points most of them not even being on one. He has complete and utter control over his instrument it is just an extension of his body and mind at this point
Im 38 years old and I've listened to jazz for about 15 years and I can say this is probably the best bass solo I've ever heard.
It had been a long time since I heard something new that was that great... They're amazing.
You could watch this on mute and still get chills. Every time I come back to this video it goes up another 100k views! Still my favorite video to date. Chills every time I watch it and tears at the bass and drum breakdown. Truly Amazing. The musical conversation through out is just incredible. Blade changed my whole approach to drums. Definitely a Musical hero... replay to hit 1M
For me one of the best CZcams videos! Outstanding! It influenced me so much! Brian Blade is THE MAN!!!
Brian Blade is among my fave drummers of all time. Such a talented fella :) Im a big big fan
A great Composer and a one of a kind drummer
Brian Blade, simply beautiful...my favorite living drummer since Elvin left us years ago.
.. the whole band is AWESOME, but..
Brian.. when he plays.. wow! He looks like he's painting..
Great comment : ))
Michele Trevisiol he is painting 👀 he’s painting your ears a picture that’s only in his mind can see.
Best video on all of CZcams? 👏👏👏
I keep coming back to this video. It's like I need to know that they are still here. Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band. This drummer, Brian Blade, is my hero.
If there's one thing that man most definitely can do...it's play the drums like a Wizard of the ninth realm.
Dr. H I have the opportunity to know Brian, back to the days in Shreveport. We had a theatre at our church that put on musicals. We usually used Brian's older brother Brady, also a great drummer. One show Brian couldn't make it, so we had to "put up with" his skinny high-school brother. Damn, it's great to see and hear how he's become a success. GO BRIAN!!
Paul Rath that's awesome.
I just started the video, and was ready to comment on the drumming. The dynamics and touch is really great. I wish all drummers knew how to play soft as well as loud. It adds so much to the sound.
Brians soul pours out in to his drumming, it's a pleasure to watch/listen. His touch is incomparable. There's so many great modern drummers and they all have their own touch, it's awesome.
I'm brought to tears, I dont usually cry but I am crying right now it’s just so beautiful I..I can’t explain it. Jazz is like no other. That’s all I have to say. Good Night
I got pretty full watching him and the musicians tell their story. This music touches the soul.
Jon Cowherd is beyond magic
This video brings back to reality feeling so grounded and sends me off into a magical space where anything is possible at the same time, every time I watch it, which is a lotttt of times by now. And I will never stop coming back. And judging by the amount of views added to it every time I return, I’m not alone.
man the pianists was off the hook!!! great work to all of you....I hope one day I'll be there at your height of talent!!!
This is some truly insane drumming. Filmed and recorded so well
I keep coming back to this again and again. This time I am so digging the interplay between Jon and Brian, especially Brian's bass drum and snare. The dynamics and excitement are exhilarating.
How come I did not have heard from Brian Blade and this marvellous group of musicians before!? Luckily that changed today! :-)
What a joy to listen to this music.
Around 13:02, in the middle of the sax duel, I got chills for almost a full minute. OMG. The real deal.
What a band! The freedom, the exquisite musicianship and the sense that anything is possible are all encapsulated within this performance. The definition of what great Jazz is capable of. Thank you.
He really is like a small percussion section on a drumset. His playing is so dynamic it's always like he's playing AROUND a beat on the entire kit and implying it rather than simply playing a straight beat in a way. Very musical and unique.
His face when he plays. I've never seen someone enjoy it like that before, this is absolutely amazing !
This could not be better.
That shift back into the melody at 13:51 is something so beautiful. Sat here a few drinks in I can't fully articulate how much it moves me
This absolutely mind blowing.
my faith in humanity has been restored
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. I enjoyed this so bloody much. All jazz hands and stank faced here.
Dude on the sax should be a hand model
Andrew Erickson for real, I thought it was a woman when the camera started panning up.
That roll followed by that punch at 4.24 ... gets me every f... time !!
The joy and creativity coming out of Brian is insane. His touch and sound are second to none
There’s some serious conversation going on here! Amazing as always.
I've watched this video like 20 times, and i'm always astounded by the amount of thought and feeling that goes behind everything brian does behind the set
Love when nice harmony goes with a sensible drummer. Drums have the biggest dynamics of all. Amazinggg👨🏽🌾
I have listened to this like 100 times and can't stop listening, It's so damn good! 14:30 on is amazing. :)
These cymbals sound ludicrously good. What a lush sizzle... #brianblade
His stick's choice and his touch have to do with it too. Cymbals are killin' tho...
The whole set sounds amazing, minus some needed punch on tha kick. Excellent cinematography as well, considering how hard it is to spot the microphones used.
Anyone know what specific model all the cymbals are?
@@alexmacarthur5136 I think they are vintage Spizzichino cymbals but I could be wrong. They no longer make Spizzichinos and the vintage ones are super expensive.
After watching(and listening:)to this video, I think it's safe to say Jazz is in good hands...Go Get'em boys!:)
2023 and STILL!
Brian Blade ❤️
He is one with the universe when he plays
It's very simple: he is the number one.
+Pietro Valente - Drummer & Composer followed by his shadow.
Buddy Rich
+Josh Okafor Can't compare a big band drummer with Briand Blade
Today, he IS the best. I always thought so otherwise, but what he's doing disturbs me deeply and boggles my mind. It's funk, swing, latin, smacking you all over the face, but execute so smoothly as if it was one entity, and actually, there is just one entity: Brian Blade.
Brian Blade is Schmitty Werben Yagermanjensen!!! He was #1!!!
I love these guys. I say it all the time, that they are the best jazz band out there right now. Such great, in the moment playing and really melodic compositions. Beautiful stuff.
You're just not ready to hear their music, this music. It's not a problem. Take time. And perhaps one day, your ears will open for it. ;)
4:24.... He knew that was straight fire what he did! Whoo! His reactions are priceless!
Brian Blade is so dirty. And I mean that in the good way that all the kids are saying these days when something is absurdly awesome. So animated and joyful, I love the way he almost jumps out of his seat when he drops a big accent.
I first encountered Blade one the Momentum album with Joshua Redman and the Rubber Band, and he totally blew my mind on that album. Everything he does is great.
Philthy as they say!.. ;) or said .... :)
This is exactly how I discovered him as well. Particularly on the song -- Sweet Nasty! I had to know who was playing that and I am glad that I did!
Man, that bass solo adding to all of this. WoW.
