Muskegon River with Alex, Drew and Josh

- Prior to the @KayakAdventureSeries event in Whitehall, Michigan, I had the chance to fish for river smallmouth with @AlexRuddFishing @RiverBasserDrew and @lachigan9165Josh Chrenko of SmallieTalk Podcast and Achigan Brand. I woke up at 5:30 am and was still on the water at 10 pm, so I fully soaked in the different patterns and habitat that the Muskegon river had to offer. Most of the hits came on various topwater presentations, so it was a fun long day for sure! Look for an upcoming episode on tournament coverage for this event.
I loved the pike catch. Such a fun fish. The last three that hit my lures have all gone fully airborne on the initial strike, as if they were auditioning for a Jaws sequel.
For sure a fun species to catch!
Jeff that bird was a Prothonotary Warbler. I have a son with autism who knows darn near every bird in North America for sure the Midwest. He was interested in the video as we go up to the Muskegon every fall for the salmon run. I jokingly call him the official photographer of the Muskegon. He takes some pretty cool pics.
It’s a beautiful river. I only scratched the surface on what it has to offer. Thanks for the bird ID!

Yes, Chris Lemessier makes them from broken/recycled hockey sticks. The company is called Broken Twig Nets.
Do you still fish the Zman Pop Shadz? Was thinking of trying those out.

I thought you would be around Jeff, with the tournament in Whitehall. Welcome to my home river! Sorry, I missed meeting you. I was salmon fishing the Saturday of the tournament. We got a boat in Whitehall.
I'm an old school RS member, and not into tournament fishing. Nothing against it. I really enjoy your river pre fish / tournament content. Wish you had more time fishing up river. The sturgeon were bedding and the big brown trout are ferocious at that time of year.
Josh knows his stuff on the Muskegon. I've seen him and this Indian boys several times. If Josh is reading, I'm the guy with the BFS Poison Ultima rods and paddle on my backpack, while doing a shuttle with my Yamaha Zuma moped. Still have the Smallies Talk stickers on my kayak trailer.
I just got back from the New River near Pembroke, VA. Caught some good smallies and a huge musky. Hope to get to the Susquehanna this fall!

Right on Kurt! It’s a great fishery. How late into the fall is it a viable place to go smallmouth fishing?
@@TheLittleStuff It gets tough around the end of September. The river gets several runs of salmon and steelhead. The Smallies bunker down or go to the lake. Honestly, I have better luck on different rivers that time of year. Crap, I've caught smallies on Christmas on other flows.
Nothing like russian roulette in the fall. It might be a bass, 24" brown trout, 12 lb steelhead, 30 lb salmon, walleye, or pike.
I saw you fish the Susquehanna river. I fish the condoguient creek that connects to it. What to you recommend mid summer.

Jeff, 3% er here. The Billy goat is a great top water, used it with much success until the GoatToadz came out. The ToadZ floats better and can be worked slower, also heavier to throw. Black is the only color you need.

Can you suggest a budget friendly medium light spinning rod? I don’t own one and would like to try one out. The ones I’ve seen seem like a noodle and I’m not used to that.
I go all custom, which isn’t always “budget friendly”.
