I have this car and it is surprisingly fast. Car and driver got 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, and can attest, it’s every bit of it.
My dealer gave me one of these as a loaner while my car was in for service- wow was it fun! Maybe not quite as good as a boxster for handling dynamics, but it’s still really really good. When you factor in how cheap you can get a nice low mileage used version - it makes more sense than a boxster. I saw low mileage models priced at 50-55k, some were even CPO. Good luck getting any late model boxster, even the 2.0 in that price range. This car at 55k vs a comparable Boxster S for $75-80k and this is a lot more value. 90% of the fun of the Boxster with better sound for 30k less… tempting! Great review BTW!

AGREE, I test-drove one the other day because my friend who is a sales manager at BMW said it's the best car BMW currently sells. After test-driving the M4, M240i xDrive, and the Z4 M40i back-to-back-to-back I agree that the Z4 M40i is the best car BMW sells right now. Imagine if BMW improved the steering feel, added ventilated seats, a high-end sound system, and improved the exterior looks, this car has the potential to rival Porsche. BUT, BMW continues to fail at fully delivering a new legendary car.

I have a 2022 Z4 M40i in Misano Blue with the full shadow line package and the gloss black rims and whenever I go to a gas station there’s always someone who compliments my car and asks me what is it and I simple say it’s a convertible Toyota Supra.😃

As someone who had owned a previous Z4 Sdrive and recently bought another Z4 less than a month ago, which is a M40i (due to my first Z4 being totaled), I personally chose the Z4 over the Porsche Boxster. The main reason is because of the tech. I personally was looking for a two seater car that's both luxury and sports car. The Porsche Boxster is also a beautiful car, but it doesn't have the luxury beautiful interior and tech that the Z4 has. But the Porsche is definitely more of a sports car and outdoes BMW in that area imo
Anyways, this was a great video. The Z4 is super fast and I'm still trying to get used to the speed haha.
I had a chance to drive one of these for a week but the 4 cylinder version. And I gotta say it was a nice change of pace from my 2017 Hyundai Elantra
You're completely right. Owning both, a Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 and a Z4 M40i, the Porsche is superior in driving dynamics and a raw and proper sports car. But I also love the Z4 so much, for its comfort, the modern infotainment and the fun I have driving open, with nearly the same horsepower as the GTS 4.0. Me, lucky guy, can afford both, but I couldn't tell, which one I would take if I had to decide.
I guess I would always chose the Porsche Cayman for its rawness.... and it grasps more looks. But the Z4 is the better daily driver if it would be your only car.

Another great review, as always, Miles! How would you compare the Z4 M40i vs. the M4 Competition xDrive [convertible] in terms of pure fun? I know there are luxury bells and whistles in the M4 that the Z4 doesn't have, and the M4 has an S58 plus full M-suspension vs. a B58 with an M-sport diff. But now that the Z4 M40i will be coming with a manual for '25, how different does it feel in terms of pure playfulness? I bought a '24 M4 Comp convertible last year and absolutely love it, though a manual wasn't available in the drop top. In a dream world, it seems like adding a manual Z40 M40i would make for an amazing companion but only if the driving dynamics were significantly different between the two. Your thoughts?

19:10 wanted to add that I cross shopped this and the Boxster S, and the Porsche is noticeably more expensive if you match it to have the same options the Z4 does. A 74k Z4 is basically full option whereas the base 78k Boxster S is very poorly equipped (no dual-zone climate, no leather dash/doors, no memory seats, no premium sound system, etc).
When you actually match specs you end up with almost a 20k gap, which is quite the difference.
Out of the 3 you mentioned, if I had access to the North American market I would go for the Jaguar hands down. Unfortunately in Europe the V8 Jag is about 100k so in a completely different price bracket.
The thing that makes it sanfrancisco red is because it resembles the golden gate bridge.
The Cayman is my choice but here in Asia, Porsche prices are jacked up to ridiculous levels. The base Cayman/Boxster here is like US$170k versus the M40i which goes for $120k. I just went with the M40i and I've been happy with it for the past 10 months.

So: If you shift into manual mode and then turn up the revs so high, at some point the BMW shifts on its own, if the BMW would otherwise take damage? And is it the same with braking?
Yes, redlining consistently is damaging, but the "ability" to hit redline and retail manual control is a hallmark of real driver's cars.

I’m going with the Z4 M40i because I’d like a convertible but if we’re doing comparisons with V-8’s I’d probably choose a C8 Corvette.
I find the BMW is the balance between the competition.
The Porsche Boxter is out dated, 4 cylinder and more expensive. Go with a GTS, and your no longer in the same league. Price will go through the roof.
The Jag, as nice as it is, the SC V8 is an overkill and too soft.
The Z4 swings both ways. Nice cruiser when you want, and an aggressive sports car when you feel like burning rubber.
