That pain you’ve been getting in your shins is called shin splins. You may get shin splints if you're putting too much stress and strain on your shin bone (tibia) and the tissues around it. Ian when your running the impact of your feet against the hard concrete is causing this.

Damn 50 miles is huge man. I don’t really know a lot about long distance runs but 13 hr is like 10 min per km for 80 km. impressive man respect. Also do you do short distance runs? If you do what is your 3 km record?

From the sound of it you're a Californian. Check out the High Sierra Loop in Yosemite. About 51-53 miles depending on how you slice it with similar elevation profile (~10k ft). Stunningly beautiful with camps spread out along the course for water etc. Congrats on the 50 miler!

How did you get the stamina to run 50 miles if you didn’t train? I run every morning and I can’t imagine ever running 50 miles straight lol. Might need some tips from Ian Goggins to improve my stamina

The bigger issue for me were the mountains. That's what I was thinking about. Keep in mind that during ultra races you can slow down a lot during certain parts if you want. When I was going uphill I'd usually slow down a lot, that's what the experienced ultra runners told me to do. You can slow down and speed up as needed, it's just up to you when you do that. I also had a lot of electrolyte drinks and some other stuff that helped me keep going. I thought running 50 miles seemed impossible too until I did it. I decided to enter the race because I knew it was impossible but I was just thinking what if I could somehow get it done

I ran a 10k in July this year after 5 weeks of training and trained on and off a bit over the next few months after that but I kept getting strained so I pretty much went into the 50 mile race untrained

The experience was enjoyable. Pushing myself to my limits and then going over 3x farther than that. The people I met were amazing too. What I learned about myself was astounding. You learn a lot about yourself when you put yourself in a situation like that with no way out. Pain is just a feeling, nothing could stop me from getting it done.
