Speed Engineering true duals are OUT!!! Single 4” Hawks Sinister with my Varex valved muffler

- Speed engineering true dual xpipe had to go. Installed 4” Hawks single sinister kit and modified for my Xforce Varex electronic valved muffler.
Reason: I loved the sound of true duals and it flowed for my power level nicely but I found myself driving around a drone at 1800 rpm. This setup is quieter, even in open mode and in quiet mode you can actually have a phone conversation lol 😂
Video is removing speed engineering true duals 3” exhaust and install 4” single exhaust. I do some idle clips of the exhaust sound amd a few revs. I’ll do more driving videos later with new exhaust system. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Just wanted to add that this channel is the best 3rd gen camaro channel ever! My head is swimming with things I want to do to my 86 iroc.
Wow thanks for that! I really appreciate that! Keep us updated on your 86!
Thank you for posting updates and giving reasons as to why you choose to do certain mods. 👍
No problem! Glad it helped!
Goodness gracious man...I hope my 92 grows up to be like that. Furiously working on it, trying to get back what was lost so many years ago. Thank you for sharing it with us bro. Love it!
Stay at it man! And thanks,l for visiting the channel!
I'm a plumber for a living and that looks as big as a set of sewer pipes! Love the chop with the valve open!
Haha yeah man, I was scared they wouldn’t fit when I first opened them up lol
Dang bro you did a great job. Ya I wouldn't be worried to much about it being a bad restriction you still have plenty of flow. And damn that sounds great thats some big pipe!! You get to hear the whine when it's quiet and a nice rumble when it's open. Great job.
I'm soooooo much happier with this setup! Yeah, I will probably leave it with the reducer for a while until that muffler valve goes out or whatever. honestly, the car feel crazy power still and I can't tell the different LOL. It may show on dyno, IDK. thanks for hanging out on the channel buddy!
Just found your channel recently. Those varex mufflers work well for that mild to wild sound. I have a buddy with a cammed LS3 vette, he had a dual mode exhaust system and its the best of both worlds, With the LS3 it's perfect. He like how it worked on his vette so much he got a varex for his daily driver, Saturn ion redline. Worked well on that too. Sound good. Loving the video's. Keep up the good work.
Very cool! thanks for the feedback man! Yeah, I love them, I'm not sure why more people run them on their projects. Thanks for hanging out on the channel!
looks fantastic love it
Sounds freaking awesome!!!
thanks bud!!! and thanks for hanging out on the channel!!
That exhaust is massive. I remember installing a Gale Banks 3” cat back on my 86 IROC back in 1987 and I thought that was big !
Yeah, I honestly had no idea what a 4” exhaust pipe was until this cam in. I thought no way this is fitting lol
Ran a Banks on my 83 HO. Performance and sound was way better. But always thought with any more power it would need more pipe, (i.e. a SC LS3).
That sounds nasty 🔥
Makes me an IROC FAN!🎉
Dude! I love it!!
Thanks man!
Oh my god it sounds good!!!!
thanks! I really appreciate that and thanks for watching!!! I'm super happy with it for sure!
Thanks for another super helpful video
Your speed engineering headers, how much to they sit below the frame rails if you dont mind me asking, done my best to eye it and looks like half the OD so maybe 1.25" to 1.5" can you confirm? Thanks
Nice. I have an 89 i put a 420 horse 355 in. Tremac tko 5 speed. My cam would sound amazing with this.
Looks and sounds great. Do you think power is the same with this exhaust?
This is your best video by far
Oh cool!!! thanks very much! It is nice to have Steve do the filming, gives better shots for sure. I am definitely trying to improve them with each one so I really appreciate that!
@@FireballMullet i think i'll copy you for my exhaust. When i was looking at that kit from hawks i saw that there is a choice between 82-97 or 98-02 "ls1". what did you choose there?
@@malcolmmok08 it was the “82-02 Camaro/Firebird "Sinister" Exhaust System 4", HAWKS”
@@FireballMullet I hear ya but when you have to choose an option from the menu is it the "LM8297" or "LM9802" model?
@@malcolmmok08 oh, yeah I see that, 82-97 version
Now I understand why you went with the smaller muffler. It will definitely be perfect once you get the larger muffler.
Nice! I have the same 4" system too. What crossmember is that?
All you need is some W-40 and windex lol. Good shit my man!
hahaha, that is all ya need ;) thanks!!!
Great work once again 👏
Question, I'm considering the speed engineering on my 3rdgen, did you have more drone with magnaflows or with the speed engineering mufflers?
The Speed Engineering duals had crazy drone no matter what mufflers I put on. I got where I was driving to avoid 1800 rpm
@@FireballMulletdo you think it was the dual in general or speed engineering duals?
Lose any power, gain power with this new system vs the true duals?
If they drone couldn’t you just weld different mufflers on?
Nice! When are u looking to get ur S60 in?
Not sure yet, Strange is still building it I believe. I'm sure with Holidays it may be a couple weeks.
The car is awsome
Thank you very much!
What brand are the replacement clamps you used for your SE duals?
Which ones? The clamps that came with the kit.
I kinda wanna do the xforce bullet mufflers with my true duals
Yeah that would be killer I think
I have the 3" true dual on my 2000 Camaro and I agree with you. It's awful lol. Way too loud and scrapes on everything. I personally would never put 3" dual on an LS1 Camaro. It's way too big for the engine. 2-1/2" would be ideal but the previous owner put it on there. It probably out performs the stock setup but leaves power and torque on the table vs a 2-1/2" dual system. I really hope to change it in the future but the only 2-1/2" true dual I can find is made by Hooker and waaaay over priced. It's crazy how many companies make a stainless 3" true dual exhaust for $400-$600 dollars then Hooker makes a 2-1/2" system that inevitably costs them less to make but they charge almost $1,100 for it. Shame on you Hooker.
Yeah, it sounds killer the first 5 minutes but that’s it lol 😂 the Holley is what I’d go with doing over honestly. It fits great
I get crazy drone in 6th at around 72 mph which I think is around 1700 rpms but what I hate the most is the ground clearance and I cannot for the life of me get it to stop banging. I've adjusted it about 15 times and it always settles back into an annoying tick. I could tack weld it but I'm afraid I'll do that and end up with the same result. It's got to go this winter. Back to a single 3'.
Do you still have the speed engineering exhaust and will to sell. Just did my swap just trying to have exhaust on before engine start up after fresh rebuilt
No, I sold it the next week I took this off lol
I had that same exhaust on my turd, it was noisy because I didnt have adequate clearance between axle and body, has 2" drop springs in rear. Are you at factory height? Hows your clearance with that 4" sewer pipe lol
It’s lowered, yeah the duals were too tight there for me also not this pipe fits awesome… definitely need the offset upper track bar though. Thanks for watching
I too have the speed engineering duals and the drone is murder. Do you think you lost any power with the 4" mufflex?
I’m not sure, maybe a little but I can’t tell driving it
I doubt it. I made 500whp with nitrous through the Hawks 4 inch kit.
so did the whole build cost 400$?
Why did you get rid of the speed engineering exhaust? 🤔
Drone was painful after driving a few minutes
Could've swapped the SE mufflers for Borla XR1s that would've eliminated drone as well
I almost did that, but I was concerned the drone would be still be there. I also had a little clearance issues lowered.
Which mufflers exactly? Looking to swap mine out
Great video thanks for the thirdgen content
You are welcome! Thanks for hanging out on the channel 🙏
I am sure you could sell off all the 4” exhaust parts to the younger generation…the 4” was way way too big for the engine anyway….most street engines need some back pressure to perform correctly.
I have the Magna flow 3” stainless steel set up with dual cat’s from stock manifolds to exhaust tip….is loud enough
Can I have the old true dual exhaust
I sold them already. Thanks for watching!
Love the car, I have 4 f bodies and 2 2nd gen firebirds, I'll probably do my Camaro similar to yours , I like the gold I roc wheels their sick
Does the varex kill power when its not opened up?
Maybe a little, next time I get it on the dyno we will check, that would be interesting for sure!
@FireballMullet ok great I will keep an eye out for that video. I have the true dual but it's to loud lol but I want something that kills sound but no power. From research going from true dual to a good single exhaust picks up power anyway.
Where did you get your varex muffler
Summit racing
@@FireballMullet okay thank you
The duals were too loud then?
Yes, for me they were. but the drone was the worst part IMO. I found myself shifting gears around it - 1,800 RPM
@@FireballMullet oh good Goddess
So nice to see your big fan running. Up here in the God-forsaken frozen wasteland of MI. we have teens at night and 20's during the day. So much for the "PC" "Global warming".
I try not to mention the weather to my northern friends lol. Man! That is chilly 🥶
I tend to refer to MI as "the frozen wasteland of Hoth"

@@JJsGA Yes! spot on, with the exception of the Galactic Empires Walkers, course, I guess we have "state" troopers instead of Storm Troopers, but, same thing.
@@davebarron5939 🤣 imagine state police with ATST's lol
@@JJsGA Would really suck in winter time, Damn cold around here. LOL
That's a 4". I feel at this point this is ment for a truck. Just my opinion. But it's your project. Do as you please
Well I get your point if it is sticking out the back like some diesel lol…but this is tucked and hidden. It is really popular in the Fbody world to do this set up. thanks for watching
Choking down to a single 3" is horrible for flow and backpressure. Single 3" is only good for ~370hp. Dual 2" is the same as single 3", with dual 2.5 the same as single 3.5 and dual 3 the same as single 4.25. The former is good for around 500HP, and the latter is good for ~700. There's an exhaust size calculator out there on a site called "mk5cortinaestate" but apparently, youtube doesn't want me to link that site since they shadow-deleted my last comment.
Either way, I love the sound of an equal length, properly matched 2-1 performance Y-pipe like this setup otherwise WOULD be with the right size muffler, plus you get the simplicity of ordering fewer parts and having less weight and less crap to fiddle with. (it's also part of the reason I prefer single turbos, single subwoofers in my audio systems, and a midbass+wideband for my front stage in my audio setups. Also part of why I prefer coupes over sedans, lol)
This did 720 to the wheel, but I probably lost a few but I can’t tell at all driving it lol 😂
Crap, forgot to mention the Helmholtz resonator. You can install a specifically tuned length of capped off pipe shortly after each header that will eliminate all drone. You do it by finding what frequency resonates the loudest at whatever your "troublesome" RPM range is, then you use a calculator to find the 1/4 wave resonance and basically weld on a pipe that's that long with a capped end. Doesn't matter what shape the pipe is, as long as it's not too small in diameter and doesn't have any weird constrictions in it.
@@FireballMullet Bitchin! Be sure to check my other reply comment since I forgot something when YT deleted my original post.
@@Drunken_Hamster yeah I’ve seen those J pipes done on 5th gens… pretty cool way to cancel it out. I’ll eventually get me a 4” Varex version of me muffler, it was almost 500 so I’ll let this one die first lol 😂
I don't know why people get a V8 LS3 and want to make it quiet your choking it, your stopping horsepower but I get it your older so you want it to sound like a 4 cylinder.
That’s the great thing about this Varex muffler, open the valve and listen to the Eagles 😂 thanks for watching
Drone can be easily eliminated by mid muffler (so called resonator) or specific blind pipe.
That would help some for sure
