Amazing Oud! A New Improv by Mustafa Said

  • Maqam World says Maqam Bayati "starts with a Bayati tetrachord on the first note, and a Nahawand tetrachord on the 4th note (the dominant). The secondary ajnas are the Ajam trichord on the 3rd note, and another Ajam trichord on the 6th note. These are often used in modulation." Pretty technical, but the best way to learn to hear this Arabic "scale" is to listen to a master improvise upon it. That is what Mustafa does in this video. It's a real joy to watch and hear him as he works his artistry. Thanks again, Mustafa!

      +Saad Alshehri Thanks for the interest. Mustafa is well and busy working in Beirut on restoring (digitally) old recordings by oud masters. I still teach at AUC in Cairo, but only on Mondays. Hopefully, Mustafa and I will get together someday soon, and perhaps record an update of his immense talent.

      @anaphylastiks Před 7 lety

      The oud is nice. I would call makam bayati with maybe a few clever modulations. Style is pretty much strictly Arabic and the intonation used is Arabic. You can hear that the player is probably capable of the carpma style used in turkish style playing.
      Funnily enough the intonation never used to be such a nationalistic subject.
