- This video was commissioned by Buffet Crampon as a backstage view of the 2006 National Brass Band Championships held at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
This was the year that the Besson brand was re-launched following the purchase of the company by Buffet Crampon. Steven Mead narrates the video with interviews from many famous musicians, sadly some of them no longer with us. The drama and energy of the day is contesting is captured well, complete with the announcement of the results and onstage celebrations by the winning band, Grimethorpe Colliery. - Hudba
Steven always smiling makes me feel so happy and joyful about music and horn playing :)
I was there in Audience, for me Grimethorpe trombones were the best section on the day, just magnificent
A very interesting video. Thanks for posting it. In Australia we see all these brass band people and bands as legends. It's like a big fairytale.
Great programme - thank you Steven
15 years in, and Grimethorpe still the best on that day...
Thanks,, Steven Great to see behind the scenes with a great flavor of the entire event.
Great coverage Mr.Mead many thanks, we need to see more of this. Sad to see so many people no longer with us, Mr Evans, Mr Whitham, The Major and I'm sure many more,... I may of not seen Grimey in 2006, but sure did in 2007. Camera coverage Imagine doing something like that nowadays in 4k !
Wonderful report by the lovely SM, a man of musical passion who knows his stuff.
Well done, sir.
Nice to see Martin Armstrong who has played with the BBBC for quite a few years.
An interesting snapshot, already 17 years old at the time of writing. In the modern era of BB contesting where we expect newly commissioned pieces every year it's not surprising, as we see in the film, that some band stalwarts looked down their nose and sniffed at this piece being picked for the National Final thinking it simply an old fashioned outdated arrangement ( apparently suitable for people over 70 according to 4BR ) and not technically challenging enough for the bands. However Frank Renton's opinion early in the film that it would be the band who best interpreted Berlioz ( via Frank Wright ) who would win was spot on: because Grimethorpe's performance did just that.
Well done.
