Hiya Yammie, any timeline of when the SS Black/Gum size 13 will be back in stock?
I have a couple of friends whose lives have been saved by wearing a helmet. One literally had his helmet crack in half from the impact. Another went head first over his handlebars into a rock. Both were able to get up and walk away after these accidents because of their helmets.
They had iron skulls.

People try to give me shit for wearing full gear riding a 135cc. I've only been riding for a few months and after a low side due to some teens not slowing down behind me during a turn I can confidently say: at +30mph even a small bike wrecks like a big bike.
Do not care of what they say.
Asphalt, tarmac, pavement, gravel, rock, concrete - call it however you want - they do not care on what displacement are you sitting at.
Had to lay er down
I usually ride with t shirt shorts no gloves normal walking shoes and openface helmet and my friends who use hoodies or jeans always complain about how hot it is to ride
@@taxman7592 No worries mate. Once you lay down and your skin, muscles or even bones get burnt, you will no longer have to care about hot weather. :)
@@cadinnelson5168 unfortunately. I probably would've been fine if the road didn't have a patch of gravel that caused my front wheel to lock mid-turn. Gotta love Indiana roads. But the guy who stopped to check on me was dialing 911 cuz he was positive they rear ended me lol they were inches away.
I disagree. Road Rash is unforgiving. A jacket is a must.
The logic being if you just got your permit or getting gear to get your permit the jacket can come later when you are actually riding on the road. When you're doing drills in a parking lot the risk of road rash is pretty low.
Is my grandpas denim Grateful Dead Jacket with tiny bits of paper in it good enough?
@@J.Artan6 that's a pool party jacket, invite lots of friends
Yes. A crushed elbow ain't no fun.
@@TheChemisch I’d argue when learning basics is the most likely time you’ll get roadrash. Most people I know have only ever gotten road rash when the barely theyve started biking
Found out last week that if you were to punch someone with motorcycle gloves with the hard knuckle pads it’s assault with a deadly weapon in my state
Which state is this btw?
@@KWillo Arizona
Ah man how do I un-punch people
@@chronicspiros8825 I'm a Floridian but I can understand where they're coming from.I have 2 pairs of tactical gloves I use for riding and the knuckle protection makes you feel like super Saiyan Goku or superman when you punch things.🤣
I'm sure that is in all 50 states. Common sense.
If Yams comes to Asia, he'd just die of heart attack from seeing everyone in their bikes without ANY gear whatsoever.
South America as well, sandels shorts and tank top
Same in Jamaica no shirt, shorts and flip flops and no helmet😂
Stationed in the Philippines 1989-92. I know what you mean!
But most bikes are less than 125cc that they put around town. When you see people do proper riding on big bikes, like say in the mountains, I see them in gear
Exactly. In india people with splendors and other commuter bikes use simple flip flops. And helmet? Forget it
DOT doesn't "approve" helmets prior to them being sold. It's a standard that manufacturers promise the helmets meet. Sadly many helmets are randomly tested and fail DOT standards after they're sold.
On the other hand the much higher standard of the ECE requires manufacturers to submit random samples of helmets for testing prior to receiving the approval and is done prior to new models being offered for sale.
For anybody that doesn't agree have a look at the Fort9 video about it. DOT standard is nothing.
DOT = DON'T OWN THAT
@@leecintra8056 everything that is tested and then “approved” in the US is mostly low standard. DOT is def one of it. that’s why you can’t even use a non ECE helmet in some parts here in europe.
Guy I was talking to, one time, said one of his "DOT helmets" was basically a plastic bucket with the DOT sticker on it
I just Started Riding and bought high top boots, a jacket and gauntlet gloves, and a helmet..”duh”
Anyway a month in and I had my fist low speed tip over. My Boots, my gloves and my bike got all scratched, but I came in one piece, not even one scratch or bruise. I am thankful that the boots, and the gloves took the hit for me. The money I spent on that gear was well worth it.
Love to hear these stories. Not the falls but the gear working 👌🏾
Nice! I plan on using my MX boots riding my new to me supermoto
I am shocked you left out something equally important with motorcycle boots/shoes. I find that they are a lot more grip on the road then my sneakers. Sometimes coming to a stop your foot may slide on old oil, water, tar snakes, etc.. But my Alpine boots does wonders in preventing my foot from sliding out.
I bought boots, gloves and a jacket, and was given a helmet before I even did my pre-learner's course. Got given a pair of riding jeans before picking up my bike (and bought a second pair not long afterwards). If you can't afford gear, you can't afford to ride.
I like that last line. Good way to look at it
Well said
Oof me over here with just boots and gloves and a helmet riding in basketball shorts and tanks 👀👀 hell my helmet is worth almost more than my bike. Close enough right 😅😅
I ride every day, with each paycheck i buy a new peice of equipment. You gotta ride smart and pay attention always in the defense mindset and youll be good, i also dont ride like an a hole.
@@BlueGemXz Nah, you're gonna have an extra bad day in the event of an accident lol. Imagine your unprotected legs and torso being cheese grated against the pavement/asphalt at [X] MPH.
The helmet saved my life a few times. One fall (a car stopped and then started forward when I had the right of way) I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt (and the helmet). I left so much skin on the asphalt, the scars are still visible. When I saw the car starting to move I hit the breaks, so this was low speed, probably 20 or 30 km/h by the time I hit the ground. Another time, almost at stand still, my bike slid on a wet rock and it fell. I landed on my knee with my not insignificant weight and the bike on top. If I wasn't wearing padded pants, it would have been good bye, knee.
My point? Don't go for the most expensive items, but get full gear and wear it all the time.
The hands thing is soooooo true. In college rack we were racing on concrete, 40 meters, and I tripped over the guy to my right.. tore all the skin off of the palm of my hand and messed my shoulder/back up pretty bad just from scrapes. Like, bad. I imagine that was right around 20 mph if I was at the top of my run. Imagine a low speed 30 mph on a bike or even 60.. let alone 100+ 😳
I got a 50cc moped the other day and I am binging ur squid vidoes😂

I have arai helmet, taichi glove, alpine jacket and alpine boots. But damn i ride a scooter :)
but the concrete dont care what you ride if you fall :)
Scooter team as well. Since the boots are for pegs and the piercey motorcycle bits, I think they're a waste. Otherwise, I agree, 100% geared baby!
A friend bought a full second hand racing outfit. Everything fit except the gloves. So he tried it out on his first ride without the gloves, crashed at around 60mph and slid on the asphalt in front of me. He only had injuries on his hands - but those looked really gnarly. I have never skipped the gloves since then.
A great video for riders like me! Thanks for taking the time to inform riders of all levels. Peace.
great content sir. i learned first hand about how a boot can save your foot. my doc martens kept a peg from entering my foot just below the ankle. i can only imagine how bad it would have been with low top canvas vans.
Great vid mate.... Thanks for sharing all of these safety tips.
Quality gear lasts much longer and protects better, the first thing I bought after passing my test was a full set of expensive Quality kit, I've still got it I have spent a fortune on kit over the years but if I intend to go and cane it for the day I put my first lot of kit on it's still waterproof and it's been tested with a few off's but I trust it so I don't think about it
That’s not true at all, I ride dirt so the gear wears through really quick, and most of the cheaper stuff actually seems to be just as good quality if not better. like for instance fox racing gloves don’t even last a whole season while other brands that don’t even focus on gloves as much as fox do, last forever
Totally agree with getting the right gear as a beginner. I wear my big leather work boots when I ride, currently and I don’t have a jacket yet but gloves and a helmet are a must
I’ve ice skated, played hockey, snowboard, surf, skate/ longboard till this day from the age of 7 and I’m 26 now so almost two decades and I’m so glad because papa yams says balance is key in riding and I’ve been practicing balance in many ways for almost two decades and I also know how nasty hand injuries can be and how easily they can happen. I am glad however my ribs will be okay when riding because I’ve broken, busted and just bruised them so many times growing up
Great video Yam! Good advice!
ty papa yam for the safety tips. I always go atgatt & a few years ago it saved my life on the i-10. got a new set of gear from the shop, cheers!
Gloves come in handy, I love it.
Great info. I agree with everything you have said.
In addition to the helmet certifications there's also now ECE 22.06 as well as some brands incorporating MIPS. Both of which include certification for protection against rotational injury.
And MIPS is the cheapest thing a manufacturer can do to protect you. Sad that not many helmets have MIPS. I always make sure my helmets are ECE, and now there are very few manufacturers releasing FIM certified helmets which very few get mainly for MotoGP.
@@Loganrx i have ece and mips
@@Fo4assaultriflefan92 same here, my instructor always told me if it’s too hot to ride with gear. Then it’s not the day to ride. But to each their own
Excellent message!! This needs to be said, especially by those with the bully pulpit like you. Thanks!
Keep it up thank you!
For an inexpensive helmet, my first helmet was a FLY Revolt. It's about 150 bucks and d.o.t and snell rated. Has multiple air vents and a pin lock visor. Visors are easily switchable from clear to tinted ect. I got a bell riding jacket with a removable winter insert for 200.
I'm new to motorcycles but came from a mountain biking background. I'm no stranger to hitting the ground and the thought of coming off a motorcycle unprotected gives me the chills.
I'm also 6'6" so buying something off the rack is unlikely. What I've done until I can get something sorted (likely custom) is pick up some Carhartt stuff and wax the crap out of it with about 4 coats of sno-seal. I haven't tested it yet but I've read a bit on waxed cotton on forum threads and they say it works. Its also water and wind resistant. Plus, Carhartt pants fit relaxed enough to add some padded shorts, knee and shin guards if you want to go that route.
I figure anything is better than nothing at all.
Thanks yammie, I just bought a 2020 honda rebel 500 as my first ever motorcycle and I'm super excited to ride😁👍
I’m in my third year of riding, so not quite a n00b anymore I’d say. On the no-helmet thing….I have taken a large bug-splat in the visor almost EVERY time I get out on the back roads. I shudder to think how that would go if I had no helmet (or just a half-lid!😳)!
Good vid as always my dude! 👍🏼
Good information for us😊
Cost of PPE is never an excuse. I outfitted myself with a full face helmet, boots, and glove for under $150. Granted - my helmet is not a Snell rated helmet. I will be upgrading each piece as time goes on but there's no excuse to not start with a full set of gear.
Right. But what you can until you can buy better. ECE, and Aramid full gear can be purchased for $350.
Time to trade my flip flops for motocycle gloves.
and my work gloves for motorcycle boots.
Gear is not the stuff to cheap out on. This stuff can save not only your life , it can safe you from the kind of pain that you can't put a price on.
100% agree, I get knocked on because I bought top tier gear , but I rather be safe than sorry.
Boots,
I got into an accident when a car pulled out infront of me. About 15-20mph on impact. My passenger broker her foot, I didn't even have a scratch on me. Wear your boots.
I have TCX Rush 2 boots. They are quite litterally the most comfortable pair of footwear I own, I wear them 12-14 hours a day sometimes without any discomfort
Love TCX
Great background music 😊
Dress for the slide, not just the ride. Just because you get away with it, doesn't mean you always get away with it. Be smart or foolish, choose one. Thanks yam!
I got all my gear I dont even have a bike yet 🤣🤣🤣 just wear it around the house to annoy the wife to get a bike sooner!! Anyone else? Just me? Ok!

First Motorcycle I rode was a Yamaha 250cc Super Moto (Road-only Dual Sport pretty much)... while rocking Pink Converse!
I love the adage protect the areas of your body you don't want to lose 👍
I recommend a vest (cut) as a minimum for a jacket. It does give some protection from small objects being hurled at you the vehicle in front if you, has a cooling effect if you're sweating and if a little protection if you were to go down.
Just a 10 minute add for his website

Right now, 2022, in some countries from Europe (like the one I live at) when you wanna get your motorbike license, and you go to a driving school and do your very first practice... You HAVE to wear Helmet, Jacket, Protection pants and boots. They do not let you take a single practice without the full gear I mention. That's now being done in every single place I know in my country, like by law. If the driving schools don't make you wear it they can get a huge fine. So imagine my face when I see videos of people in other countries riding without even a helmet. It blows my mind really. The quicker we get used to wear gear, and to see people wearing gear every single day on the streets, the better IMHO. Ride safe guys.
Wow. What country are you in?
@@Yowzoe currently Spain. I don't know for sure if other european countries do that as well. Anyway if you don't bring your own equipment the driving schools let you use some of their own. But you gotta wear it for the practises and the exam.
@@Mr_Phoskitos It makes obvious sense, I wish they do that in my state in the U.S.

I used to do tear off and the toughest Milwaukee gloves would turn into wet paper as soon as I tear some asphalt up. Even the fine kind.
I saw the thumbnail and didn't realize it was a yammy video and I thought Alpha M was dissing my adidas
I'm prioritizing the jacket because I already have some riding gear from when I was younger I've got a good helmet nice leather chaps decent gloves so my priority is jacket shoes then better leg protection
If I’m just doing street cruising, I’m on a 2002 Honda nighthawk 750, are the alpine star shoes okay for that? Or should I always go half calve boot
I have the Harley shoes and they are absolutely awesome. They where 50% off at the time still $75 but I love how they wear too. They are the high tops
You guys really took your liberties with the effects on this video
If you want a higher rated cheaper helmet I would recommend the Bell SRT. It’s DOT and Snell approved while it only costs like $220.
Spent most of my funds on a Shoei RF-1200, then bought budget friendly gloves, jacket and shoes. Rev’it Arrow shoes are a solid choice and look great as well. Also wear their Eclipse mesh jacket. It’s super comfy and allows for a lot of air flow. Both products are relatively inexpensive ($179 each) and I’d definitely recommend them to riders on a budget.
That said, it blows my mind to see riders just wearing helmets around here. Proper gear is one of things that I’d rather have and not need, than need and not have.
bro please get some real boots next, I just broke my ankle wearing hi tops like that. All it took was someone hitting me at 20 MPH, and I fell off. Those shoes are better than converses or work boots...but ultimately don't do shit compared to a real knee high boot.
@@noahcovell4698 good advice, from someone whos learned the hard way. Squids, listen to this man!

Its easy to tell who's crashed and who hasn't. The ones who haven't been down, shorts, no shirt, flip flops, no helmet. The ones who are smart or have been down, proper protection 👍👌😉
I've never been down and I always wear my gear. Fuck not wearing it. Not worth it
Not going to lie... been riding all my life, have been down and I also wear those exact Adidas...
I’ve been down once but I don’t go all out when it comes to gear (maybe I should). I wear a helmet and gloves though. Sometimes my moto jacket🤷🏾♂️
The only time I ride full squid as mentioned above is when I am on a bicycle. When I laid down my motorcycle, my first I was wearing full gear, and will continue to do so.
You can always look at secondhand options. I picked up an Olympia jacket for $65.
are there any good mx gloves (that protect you on the street)? because i prefer those mx gloves when riding a sumo
in your opinion what's the best gear for the Honda X-ADV? Smart-casual style clothing would be ideal as I dont want to look like a fighter pilot or a biker when I step down
Hey Yammie, you've done some deep dive videos on helmets, but there is one aspect I haven't seen you cover. Determining the shape of your neck bean. I think its too subjective to have someone look at your head and say yeah, it looks like a cantaloupe or no it looks more like a rugby ball. Is there a more accurate method? My husband has always struggled getting a helmet he feels fits well. So this year while he was agonizing (and I'm not being dramatic here) over which helmet to buy. So, I employed a very self proclaimed scientific method to determine his head shape. I know I'm and intermediate oval, I wear a brand of helmet that has always fit me consistently and they are intermediate oval. So, I measured his head front to back, and from ear to ear and comparing measurements. I find only a 0.75" difference between the two measurements. So we ordered a model of Arai offered in Round shape. Viola, that's his proper fit.
After riding for 15 years I was hit by a truck at 70mph 6 months ago. Was just cruising on the highway enjoying the weather and a truck didn't see me and tried to cross the road. Had less then a second to react. Was in the ICU for a week and broke 11 bones, had a brain bleed and had emergency surgery on my knee. Had I not been fully geared (helmet, jacket, Kevlar riding jeans, boots and gloves) I wouldn't be here right now. Craziest part was being conscious the entire time and vividly remembering every second. Listen to Yammie, gear is extremely important. Even when its hot out. I'm pretty much fully recovered minus the knee pain now but I couldn't walk for nearly a month after the accident. Don't skimp out on the gear.
Hi Yammie what can I get as a jacket that doesn't make me melt under Sicily's sun? I think the weather is similar to the one you have in Texas
Good stuff, but papa Yam for beginners may I suggest some knee guards to go with those gloves, that is if you can't get the pants. I remember the knee pains I had after my first week of riding due to my low speed drops.
Facts ,my riding jeans have knee pads I love em
@@agawdsparadise3782 thanks for the reply, by the way, I need to know how do riding jeans work? Do you wear them over other apparel or are they meant to be stand alones? Also, what I had in mind for beginners are those pads that are independent, kind of like the skate board thingies, they don't cost much but they do help alot.
After riding for 3 years on my fz09 always at least wear tcx rush boots i wore vans 1 time for a 10 minute ride and it was almost 100 degrees out and it was the most awkward feeling 😅 idc anymore boots in all weather feels right

What's your opinion on the classic "engineer" style boots?
How do u feel about work/hiking boots?
how do you shift with the big boots? they look so hard to move my foot in
I bought a pair of dedicated riding boots but I hate them because the upper is so stiff and reinforced I can barely feel the gear shift lever. I hate riding in adidas trainers but if it’s a choice between being able to make clean shifts and protection and clumsy shifts I have to go with the former.
Anyone have any suggestions for boots that allow the same tactile connection with the shifter as a trainer?
Back in 2017 I got in an accident at a low speed in a school zone 😅. A minivan pulled out and hit me (she was at fault). I was wearing full gear from the waist up. So scorpion helmet, textile jacket, and rebut gloves. Had road rash on one leg, broke me left thumb and right wrist. But my head and face were fine, and not a scratch on my upper body. I definitely recommend wearing full gear!
Did insurance cover everything for you?
examples to wear your gear. one time I was long boarding learning to slide and caught an edge sliding going about 30 mph and I flew in the air flipped all the way over and my hand was the first thing to hit the ground back of the hand too and I had gloves on but just a T shirt and my whole left arm and shoulder got sucked under in between my legs so that arm got road rash and it sucked my face to the ground only had a half bowl helmet on so I had to just put my face down chin to chest and hope my helmet hit first and the helmet hit first thank god and I slid about 15 ft on the helmet and my arm all the way into the curb and also the helmet slide along the curb for about 3 ft so I basically avoided becoming a vegetable or dying. and at best would of had really really bad scares on my face if I had no helmet on. furthermore my cousin did the same thing on a penny board just downhill skating not even sliding without a helmet and he got knocked out cracked his skull open and had to be rushed to the ER. thankfully he is ok. wear your gear.
If your budget is that slim that you cant afford a low lvl, cheap, second hand jacket and trousers maybe you should wait just a little bit longer to hop on that two wheeler. I lowsided my first bike at 30km/h (18-19mph) and was wearing used goretex pants i bought for less than 80usd and a jacket for less than 50usd. I walked away without a scratch. The gear was torn thou
On the subject of gloves, I've actually seen more than a few riders out her in SoCal wear gloves as their only piece of non-mandatroy sfety equipment (helmets are required out here by law). They'reriding tank tops, shjorts, and tennis shoes, but still wear gloves.

Lol I wear those Adidas just a different color around town but I wear boots if I have to get on the highway
i don't have boots for riding my bike, but i do use some big hiking shoes that goes up to the ankle, and that are pretty rigid. Is this enough or do i really need to buy some boots? oh and i'm riding a small electric bike, it doon't go at more than 50kmph
