I just love Chicago's skyline. It's so imposing. I have a hard time deciding which skyline just looks as massive when approaching from the freeway. Chicago or NY? Both are breathtaking.
Brandon H Chicago, definitely Chicago, New York only has three skyscrapers that are tall, Chicago has 6, Willis tower, Aon Center, Trump international Hotel and Tower, John Hancock Center, 311 south Walker drive and att corporate center.

The one and only time I've been on the Skyway was sometime way back in the late 1970s (a lifetime ago). It was a steely-grey day in winter, with remnants of snow piled on the shoulder, half-melted and tarnished from exhaust fumes. Despite the changes I've read about throughout the years, certain things remain clear in my mind about this journey... especially how the skyline suddenly explodes out of nowhere right in front of you -- and then as the road curves sharply to the left, you skim the side of the Sears Tower. Seems close enough to touch, and then just as quickly, you are past it. Completely different feeling than when approaching the City from the Western suburbs on the Eisenhower, which I've done hundreds of times. Thanks for posting this -- great memories.
The Skyway Bridge is the most extraordinary bridge I've ever driven on! It's so much fun to look at and drive on! It's amazing that the highest point of the road on the bridge is probably even higher than a ten-story building!

My old friend, the Skyway. We made countless trips over it during our trips from South Bend. I could drive that stretch blindfolded today.:) The Skyway wasn't widened when it was rebuilt; it was six lanes right from the start.

@HensaStralem We in Oklahoma are used to a McDonald's in a tollway's median. There's one in the median of the Turner Turnpike halfway between Tulsa & Oklahoma City.

The towering housing projects he mentions in the video were the Robert Taylor Projects built in 1962. This was the biggest projects ever built. They were torn down over a period of years because they were unsafe. Drugs, shootings, rapes, kid nappings. MR.T lived there and so did Kirby Puckett. There are many more famous people who lived there over the years. There are some really great documentaries about the Robert Taylor projects and a book or two was written.

Well, he entered from the Indiana toll road, an area KNOWN for their tolls. The other tolls are there because Indiana forced Chicago to build a new highway so they needed something to make up for the cost.
I was gonna suggest you do one for I-55 to lake shore drive and up that road but then I realized this video was from 2010. Great video though! Love the music too!

I remember driving thru there in 2006; it was a miserable, gridlocked mess at the time. Awesome view of downtown; it's nice to see someone finally recording Chicago's freeways in excellent, HD format.
No, they're not ridding of the skyway anytime soon. Chicago has the busiest road system in the world: makes sense because everything in North America is connected to it.

Yesterday I was forced to follow other vehicles while driving a school bus over the skyway bridge both ways in the far right lane. I'm not good with heights. This footage doesn't at all convey the sense of how high up you feel on the far edge in the high seat of a school bus. It was all I could do to breath and not have a panic attack severe enough to endanger us.
Interestingly, I live near the west end of Interstate 90 (just north of the Seattle area). I do drive it every now and then. Probably would drive it all the way to Chicago and back if I had the opportunity (along with both the extra time and money of course).

Brendan Schiltz your best bet is to take 55 to 294 northbound (294 is a tollway just a heads up) and then take 290 east and get off at Damen, you’ll be right in front of the UC
PeterGriffin4200 not exactly. Okay so I-290 goes toward the direction of Naperville but then splits off around Franklin Park and goes north towards Elmhurst, when it splits the road does continue straight but it’s no longer I-290 it becomes I-88 and that goes to Naperville

Damn, the Sears Tower is one goliath of a skyscraper. Hardly is there any skyscraper as intimidating as you approach it.

It’s pretty cool that power lines go under the bridge. There are definitely cooler bridges though like the Sunshine Skyway in Florida.

The Indiana turnpike ends and then there's a separate toll for the skyway. In Illinois, they have a few separate tollbooths instead of a turnpike

Ryan Jones 90 is the longest interstate in America, it’s goes all the way to Boston
9 minutes to Montrose and 19 to O'Hare from the Circle? That's a borderline miracle.

There were conflicting stories on that back when the video was shot. They still have the "TO" plates posted which is confusing.
The Federal Highway Administration considers the Skyway as I-90; so the "TO" signs are incorrect and confusing.
