The best part of this is they were barely 21 their voices still weren't 100% developed. Having them redo this again would be perfection
I think the meaning behind the words of this song express exactly the way they were feeling at the time they released this cover. Just like “The Lucky Ones” expressed how they were feeling at their 10th year of success.
That last line couldn't be more fitting. I don't think they dreamed they were going to be this big.

I view this song as the kickoff to their breakout season. IIRC, this came out around August 2013, followed about a month later by The Evolution of Music, then a month after that the simultaneous release of PTX Vol. 2 and the video for Daft Punk, then a month after that was the two songs added to PTXmas, including Little Drummer Boy. Each video did better than the last, with LDB becoming their highest charting song (#13 on Billboard’s Hot 100), and the videos for Evolution and Daft Punk becoming their first with 100 million views. Royals didn’t quite hit that level, but it got them attention and prepared the way for the success that followed.

The end scene in their ‘before we were famous’ clothes is a punch in the gut (in a good way). I always get choked up a little.
I agree it would be cool to hear them do this song now. I do imagine Mitch singing in the rafters in certain parts and getting a solo part from every member.
The last shot always gets to me, too. To me it's saying that, from where they started, which is what those outfits represent, to where they were at that time, they were bigger than they had ever dreamed THEN. Can you imagine if their 21 year old selves could see their 30 year old selves for even a second? 😮

I know exactly what you mean about wanting to hear this one with "2022 Mitch's voice". I've often felt the same way about hearing "Say Somethng" led by 2022 Kirstin. Both were excellent in their early cover, but with the growth and maturity in both of their voices in the intervening years, it would be spectacular.

It's so fun to see them sing the singoff songs without having to push it out from down in their toes! It's quite sweet. I personally like this recording from Japan 2020 because it's a fairly quiet audience and more recent. But there are many versions out there. I think when you've covered more of their old stuff you would find that fun to watch.
Thank you, because as always there are songs you really need to hear with their recent voices & skill. I always wanted to hear what Mitch would be able to do with Dog Days Are Over now, I wasn't disappointed. Although interesting to see how Scott backed off on it compared to the way he went all in on the show (I guess a lot of that came from the emotion of the moment & it's hard to step into that 9 years later)

I get that they couldn't hit on every milestone, because the whole concert would be just one long evolution and they'd still miss something out, but I can't believe they skipped past Daft Punk without even a mention.
@@hawkeyescoffee6399 Pretty sure they opened the whole tour with a full daft punk performance :) And I love the tour clips from the throwback part because they always interact more with each other on stage and giggle and in general are a bit more "loose". Scott having his "diva moment" in that one is too funny.
@Rebecca ah, thanks, that would make sense then. It just ended weird out of context, I guess. I get the feeling that it's usually Scott that messes up, whether forgetting his words or coming in early/late etc, and I love how the others tease him over it and he is just as quick to laugh at himself too, it's a wonderful glimpse of personalities and their friendship.
So excited for this reaction… Royals was my gateway song that started me down that PTX. rabbit hole early on in the whole Covid thing. I had just watched PMJ’s version (Postmodern Jukebox ) ft. Sad Clown and this was a suggested follow up… so I clicked… then came Hallelujah… and I was a goner. In the best way. Then I watched PMJ’s Mad World with the Sad Clown & Haley Reinhard… followed by the suggestion of PTX Mad World. Haley has a voice to be appreciated, for sure. This gem is the perfect antidote to my morning!
I love them so much. Every phase I love This one is so cute cuz they bought their royal,clothes and did this with no budget. Their success is so earned I heard Scott say in an interview that in the early days they literally sang together everyday for a year to improve and improve. ❤️
Definitely one of their best covers, and this was early on.

I agree with you with the mature voices and 10 years of perfecting -- this would be amazing. True, it's amazing as it is. What I find so fun in these early days videos is knowing WHERE they are going to go. All those dreams and look at what they've done. They deserve all of it too.
I know exactly what you mean. After 10 years they have such control and they know their instrument so well. Had they done the prayer at any other time in the past it would be completely different. This was the perfect time for them to do the prayer. I'm pretty sure you watched their video of evolution of Michael Jackson I'm pretty sure you reacted to pop spring 2016 and if you haven't you must. They do evolution of Michael Jackson and you can hear how their voices have matured.

I was thinking the same thing!! About them redoing this. All 5 of their vocals have matured & have gotten even better! Kirstin & Scott notably. Avi popping back to do it would be amazing lol. Even *his* voice has grown so much. His bass would be super sick on this today.

Agree 💯! It is great, but I can only imagine how epic it would be with 9 years of experience in the rear view. More sassy, more belting, etc. my fav of the really early vids is Somebody That I Used To Know. Super simple and budget friendly, filmed in the stairwell of a parking garage for good acoustics. 😉🔥
This was a Mitch transitional song for me. During this time people were complaining that Scott was taking the lead too much, while Mitch was noticeably going full-tilt diva voice with the live shows while staying subdued during studio performances. Same with Aha, Compare the star vista performance with the music video; it's two different Mitches. It was as if the "I'm in love with being queen!" line was taking him over and by the end of that tour we got the ridiculous Mitch-slapper we know and love today because of it.

I've had this song in my head for hours since listening to your reaction. I loved it, too. a suggestion for a future reaction is Papaoutai, in which they sing in French, and features Lindsey Stirling with Kevin on cello.

I know what you mean but I think its more 2022 mitch confidence. He always had the range but he often stayed in 'masc mitch' space in those early days.
I always love the seeming simplicity of the arrangement for this. Of course, it would be great to see them have a wild breakdown moment, but sometimes that's not needed. I too would be curious what a 2022 version would be like because they have all grown in their technical abilities, range, and confidence. I imagine sassy Mitch would be even sassier now, and it would be interesting to see how Matt's bass would have sounded too. One thing I love about this video is the way they almost act like a human visualiser, showing us so simply who is singing at what point.
This is one of my favorites. Mitch's voice was perfect for it. I do agree, though, that it would be something different if they were to do it today. It would be different, but just as magnificent. :)

This version is so simple and appropriate for where they were in 2013. I wouldn't really want to hear Mitch doing an Aha version. Early couch video Mitch, with his black frame glasses, looking like a nerdy accountant was adorable. This Mitch was normal, but still cute Mitch.
Hello Saucey Dad. Another great reaction. Your commentary on wondering what this would be like sung now with more maturity, experience and honed vocal skills is perfectly understood. Mitch Grassi is really a once in a generation talent. You spoke of 2022 Mitch voice but you still have a lot of 2021 Mitch voice to listen to, as well as PTX originals. I think you still have to do their cover of The Prayer (be prepared with Slappy) and Come Along (loads of fun) and then songs from The Lucky Ones, their 10th Anniversary Album released in 2021. Recommendations for the title track The Lucky Ones, Happy Now (bring dancing shoes), Anchor (bring a cup of tea), Never Gonna Cry Again (bring a box of tissues) and then the Evergreen Album at Christmas. I will your channel to see if I missed these.

I was waiting to make any comment until you saw the end. Not disagreeing about them redoing it. But considering where they were when they did this, the ending said it all. And you are totally going to catch flies, and break your jaw when you drop it listening to PTX. Just saying.

I played drums and sang when I was much younger. I am working both hands and arms and both feet along with my mouth. I am no where near as talented as they are so it may be different for them because they have more talent in their pinky than I do in my whole body. I had to get to a certain spot in my brain to make it all work together. I would imagine Kevin has to get in a certain headspace to do what he does when he celloboxes.
I'm gonna be the outlier and disagree with everyone. I, too, would enjoy hearing a current live take on this, but I honestly don't think it would be "better." I don't care that it was done in 2014 and they've honed their craft for eight years and their voices have changed along with their bodies. This take, right here, is extraordinary.
Except, I'm really sorry to say, for that very last chord, which is just a hair "off" to my ears. I can't sing even in the shower, but I've got pretty good ears and if they re-recorded this today I believe they'd probably have a different harmony on that last note. Obviously, just my personal opinion.
