It's a really sad thing! However, for the Stars, the only way to end the war against them was to literally kill them. And an interesting fact is that the one who proposed the idea of killing them was Ink, at first Swap was not convinced but in the end he agreed, the one who was completely against it was Dream, trying to tell them that there could be another way to stop them without necessarily killing them, but they didn't listen.
