  • Fred Sanger, 1918-2013, worked all his life in Cambridge. First at the Department of Biochemistry, where he sequenced insulin, the first full sequence of a protein at that time. For this achievement he was awarded his first Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1958.
He then moved to the LMB where he stayed until he retired. In 1980 he received his second Nobel prize in Chemistry, shared with Walter Gilbert for “their contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids".
His sequencing method has had tremendous impact worldwide and Fred is considered to be the father of Genomics.
Fred Sanger has the distinction of being the only scientist to have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry twice: in 1958 and 1980.
Fred was the head of the LMB's Protein and Nucleic Acid Division when the new lab opened in 1962 and continued to work at the LMB until his retirement in 1983.
This short film is made by Dr Birgitta Olofsson, Newnham College, alumna of the LMB, and Jonnie Howard Film, to celebrate the centenary of Fred’s birth.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
