Harry Thaw: The Original Killer Playboy

- “Trial of the century” - it’s a short and snappy phrase that grabs people’s attention. That’s probably why the press has relied on it whenever dealing with a high-profile court case to drum up as much interest as possible for a juicy story that dominates the headlines.
Hey, even we here at Biographics haven’t shied away from using that old adage when describing some of the stories we’ve covered such as the trial of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle for the murder of Virginia Rappe or the trial of Dr. Sam Sheppard who stood accused of killing his wife.
But today we’re going back even further, to one of the first-ever cases to earn the moniker of “trial of the century” and, to this day, still one of the most intriguing and shocking - the 1906 murder of renowned American architect Stanford White at the hands of mentally-unstable playboy Harry Thaw, ostensibly to protect the honor of his wife, famed supermodel Evelyn Nesbit.
So what made this case so compelling? One contemporary reporter listed all the qualities of this murder scandal that gripped the nation:
"You see, it had in it wealth, degeneracy, rich old wasters, delectable young chorus girls and adolescent artists' models; the behind-the-scenes of Theatredom and the Underworld, and the Great White Way. . . the abnormal pastimes and weird orgies of overly aesthetic artists and jaded debauchees…"
This is the story of a love triangle that ended in murder and became front-page news all over the country as America waited to find out with bated breath what fate would befall Harry Thaw, the killer playboy.

I did a presentation on this Trial of the Century in grad school! Stanford White basically was living as the early 20th century version of Christian Gray of "50 Shades of Gray," and Evelyn's "appendicitis" was very likely a euphamism - lots of girls who found themselves "in the family way" without a wedding ring at that time wound up with bouts of "appendicitis."
Honestly, I'm looking forward to Karl's videos on Biographics, Geographics & TopTenz. He's been doing a solid job. And it's very nice of him to give Simon props for being the previous host.

I own a portrait of Evelyn Nesbitt in ink and charcoal by Charles Dana Gibson. I purchased it at auction as part of a junk lot, the contents of an old desk. I think I paid $5. I often wonder what the back story was of the drawing.

People seems to have forgotten what constructive criticism is, this is just criticism in the comments. They don't specify any issues that can be worked on, or present anything actionable. I am all for negative feedback if it has a purpose other than to hurt someone's feelings with no positive outcomes. While I think Karl is doing a good job and have said such, I am sure he has room to grow. Give him something he can act on.

I alreadyl liked Karl's video. But honestly, listening to him being disgusted at the mistreatment of the teenager Evelyn Nesbit by the men who claimed to "love" her cemented my loyalty. I hope she had a good life after these horrible men exited her life. As Simon said The Past Is The Worst.

I love Karl’s hosting style. It’s informative, like Biographics always has been, but it has those extra sprinklings of humour and references to nerd culture that I understand 😂

That guy was a prick, So sad what happened to Evelyn (a full biographics would be pretty cool of her). Also I think you're bringing a very unique but equally good setting and character to all three channels. Heck, I even started to watch fact fiend which is like a mini podcast, Karl is a great replacement for Simon.
I really don't like change it's just kinda feels off I got used to simon
interesting story, only complain is that the presenter remind us to many times of points he already made and also put to much personal bias in the presentation, should be more impartial and let the story be told. We can make our own conclusions of what is bad.
I watched a video on another channel showing White's mansion. In the video, the host mentioned his issues but didn't get into details. He asked us to comment if we believed the claims.
I said not only do a believe them, since multiple girls alleged it happened to them, but I think his friends knew and didn't care. It's sickening.

I'd love to see a biographics episode about Ernst Junger, a German soldier during WW1, who went on the hate the nazis but served as an intelligence officer during WW2 and was rumored to be involved in the valkyrie plot to assassinate Hitler. He later wrote the incredible book, Storm of Steel about his time in the trenches of WW1.
If he was violent and prone to outbursts, he probably needed some anti-psychotics.

The original owner died. His daughter took it over, and things got difficult between her and Simon.
