    Interesting video. I am just wondering why did you remove the insulation at first then puncture the battery shell.
    What is the danger of piercing a hole without removing the shell. A small hole with a needle is more than enough to get the air out. Any comments appreciated. Thanks

    • @ModItBetter
      @ModItBetter  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi on the table you can see I have a small needle . I was more worried about showing using a needle because if you push too hard it will short out some cells. It will work anything that can break through the layer will work. Personally as i said in my description , I should of used a sharp piece of plastic to create the hole. Its really what you feel safe using as well. I didn't go through the shell because again its about control. But No reason why you can't if you take your time and feel comfortable doing it.
      also we don't know if part of the cell layers are stuck at the top of the puffed up battery as well.
      A month after the video one of my viewers made a video using a needle. and he has no problem doing it. But again just take your time and stay safe.

    @zombicreature Před 3 lety +4

    How long did it run after this? I did something similar as an experiment with 2 puffed lipo's but didn't cover the hole and they died withing days. I assume the oxygen getting in oxidizes the lithium, but seeing you squeezing the gas out, i think each time you stop some air gets sucked in anyhow, so even if its sealed within maybe weeks it will completely die or puffen up again.
    My take on it is if the hole its made on one end and you squeeze from the opposite towards it continuously and just before you stop you place the tape over it will prevent any air getting in when you stop.

    • @ModItBetter
      @ModItBetter  Před 3 lety +1

      I've had really good luck with them.. maybe its the tape i'm using seals the hole really good. I've done lots of those little ones as well that seem to love to puff up..
      . I also charge them at half c now instead of at c or double c .. lol
      I was thinking of using epoxy .. but I don't want to be mixing chemicals on something I'm truly not knowledgeable on . And so far using the duct metal tape and electrical tape over top has been working .

      @ModItBetter  Před rokem

      it should say the c on the battery.. I just ordered a diode jumper clamps/booster clamps . to basically do what your asking .. it can do max c and beyond for only couple of seconds ..and you will get puffin of the battery if any longer, plates will separate ..

    • @ModItBetter
      @ModItBetter  Před rokem

      I should note trying to achieve max c can be dangerous is no different in some cases of shorting out the battery .. but keep in mind the battery booster packs for cars that cost 200-500 dollars have a smaller lipo and still get 500 or more amps out of them, the only difference is they have mosfets that limit the battery to only couple of seconds of full amperage .

    • @ModItBetter
      @ModItBetter  Před 2 lety

      hi i've never had a issue re charging them..but not say its not dangerous .I do charge them at about 700ma-1amp now.. I use to charge them at 5 amps / 1c for what ever the battery is meant for so a 2400ma battery i would charge at 2.4amps ect..
      One video i found said the puffing is when 2 plates separate and that causes the puffing. However I have found other videos or pages that say its cause from the charging process and gas is a by product from heat . I'm really wondering if its more on how these battery's are just rushed and not sealed up extremely tight. As they just build ship and sell with no worry of lawsuits like phone battery's where it can totally hurt a company with defectively wrapped battery's as they have to be really squished up tight in the silver package...
      anyways if you can order a new one and chuck it or gamble like I do but thats on you.

      is it a good idea to make a homemade sky lantern that can fly off into a forest and catch 1000's of homes on fire?? I don't think so. =P .. but yes you are right its not the best idea to puncture a lipo battery . but for me it works. And if you can get replacement battery's in your country easily I would not suggest this at all..

    • @niharranjanmahali8549
      @niharranjanmahali8549 Před 3 lety

      Removing gases from a battery by punturing it can make the battery just looks good as new for your satisfaction but later on after a few uses it's power will gradually decrease means it drains so fast and finally one day it will be completely dead, i am saying this as per my experience because something like this happend with me. One of my 3s lipo battery was puntured during crash and i reapired this way but after some day that complety dead.
      BDW, where i was flying sky lanterns there are no homes and dry forest and that time the season was monsoon, i am always aware about those things..... so don't imagine be practical.

      @@niharranjanmahali8549 its been 11 months and all my battery's are still good.. However i no longer charge them at 1c or 2c . that's what actually creates the extra oxygen in the battery's . This is not the same as your crash example as this is releasing the oxygen nothing more. Unless you puncture through some plates and short them. My example of the lanterns, just because you do it safe does not mean one of your viewers will and they may burn down a village . However I didn't go to your channel and post that !.. I just found it ironic your first comment to me thats all.. . Your second comment at least you explained your thoughts on it , Even though your example is nothing about the extra oxygen and your just guessing what would happen to them . I did it and i know it works for a fact with nothing negative on the battery as all i did was released the oxygen on all my bloated battery's, If it didn't work , my channel is not about lying to people, all my mod video's are done in real time and if it does not work out I would post it didn't work . Or make a update video on it.
      Also i would rather release the oxygen in the battery in a control fashion then having it crash and puncture and release it all at once around electric circuits that are most likely shorted from the crash. This is not about looks or making them look pretty for my satisfaction at all its about getting rid of the extra gas. But again the best thing to do is throw it away and get the bloated battery out of your house .
      I don't care about people posting this and that about it being dangerous but I live in facts And i know for a fact that this worked because i actually did it on over 20 battery's of all sizes, with no loss of energy that just not make any sense that would happen.

I urge all to get a new battery if possible .The video is basically just showing that I finally got sick of everybody saying to throw them away because they are bad. In Rc and quad copters its usually just due to charging them or discharging them too fast. and none of the cells are actually bad. I have both battery's that were shown in the video and they both still work.
      I'm comfortable doing this Now..
      I've seen lots of video's of others showing how to take a 3s battery completely apart as well.

      .edit... Most likely it is the battery, it smells fruity .. It is possible it is the glue but doubtful.. You might of punctured it while trying to pry the mouse case off with a screwdriver ect..??.. To be safe i would get the battery out of your house... Take note of the cell numbers 3.7v ect.. .. Also if the battery has a plug on the end you might want to cut one lead at a time to save that end so you can just replace the battery with another cell . If it does not have a connector at the end but is soldered in place.. cut one lead at a time close to the battery so you can twist on the leads from the new battery .
      Or if you can solder just desolder it..
      If you post a link to what the battery looks like . I can probably help you find a replacement if your un sure about that.
      (Leave another comment saying you posted a link though as a rarely check my flag comments with links)
      the battery might of been puffed up already and all you did was released the gas from it by accident. However because you did not do it in a control way ,you wont know if you bent some plates and can potentially short out at anytime. So its a pretty big gamble to keep using it.

    • @ModItBetter
      @ModItBetter  Před 3 lety

      it really depends on your setup if its in a tight container it can squish other cells but doubtful it would do damage. I would be more concerned of the cells releasing all the gas at once / bursting (which to this day i've never seen it actually happen) Personally i would either remove them or release the gas in a control setting . If your management system is ignoring the cells that are bad.. is a good thing but might be a bad thing long term as well .??
      ..
      If you do release the gas you might have to wake the battery back up with a very small current for 20 or so hours on another lithium charger( 100ma or bellow) ..Your bms might of let them get way bellow the safe spot for the battery ..
      Personally if your bms is saying its bad, get rid of it ..as they can't detect bloated battery's and all the ones I have come across charge fine during and after I release the gas.
      If your getting lots of bloated battery's I would look at the charging rate or the discharge rate of why its happening .. unless you know and this is just the cost of your setup.

      it can be from a bad charger .. charging at too many amps.. could be what ever you used it for, drains it too fast.. And extremely possible its just defective.. If you have a balance charger that can view the charging of each cell be helpful .. one cell might at its max and the rest are still low . if its a multi cell (2cell ,3cell,4cell) ect.. If its a one cell those guys love to puff up from to much amps during charging ..

    • @ctvxl
      @ctvxl Před rokem +1

      The #1 most common cause is letting them sit around fully charged for long periods of time. That will ruin a lipo quickly. Get a charger that has a storage charge setting. Always storage charge the lipo when you are done for the day. They will last much longer. A fully charged lipo will be 4.2v per cell. Storage charge is 3.8v per cell.
      If you have a puffy cell, hook it up to a light bulb or spare motor or other small load, and run it *completely* dead, then dispose of it. A puffy cell is a ruined cell.

      Hi .. I just pulled them out,, I have not used them for about 8 months.. .. The first pack from the video are 3.82 * 3.83 * 3.85 so a tad off but not bad..
      the second battery was puffy again just Now..9/7/2021 buttttt That means using the electrical tape and the metal tape actually worked.. I just simply peeled the tapes back and released the gas again. .. This one i would have to discharge i think before charging again.. its sitting at 4.2 * 3.8 * 3.87 ..If i remember right I got that one from banggood and one cell was always off from the start.. and the cell would over charge from 4.2 but that was 2-3 years ago.. its actually sitting at 12.6 so maybe later today or tomorrow i will discharge again and see how many amps it can hold again. Does not seem right to be at 12.6 volts after 8 or so months..(also if you add up the cells it does not = 12.6 anyways ..)
      i was using the second to fly my quad again its been awhile because of restrictions .. the First one i had screwed up in the video I use with a dc to ac converter for when the power goes out to power my network Modem.routers for..phone /voip ect..
      Anyways I took them both off the charger and will try to discharge them in the next couple of days and give them a full charge again to see what state they are really in.

So explain why it would later on! condensation if the tape failed?.. The hole is about the size of a pin head. so maybe seal it with something else beside 2 different style tapes? Like maybe really small piece of tape then epoxy over the tape?? I'm not trying to argue but instead of saying something won't work ,Explain why so maybe we can over come what your issue would be.

If your battery is swelling extremely fast not over a year type thing.. then I would look at the charging system or how your using the battery you/he might of been drawing just too many amps or charging it too fast when he needed to put another one in for his purpose .. Personally it sounds in his case to be a charging system fault as it should of caught the problem instead of continuing to feed it more ,My guess his charger over charged it.

      Use kapton to seal the hole. (also next time use a pin, the smalled the hole the easier it is to seal it air tight).
      You could also use it to bind the cells together but think notmal scotch tape is more than good enough.
      Electrical tape rots, it wont hold the seal for too long, 1 or 2 years at most, thats why use kapton which is heat resistant and the glue wont rot or dry after the years. The only downside with kapton is that its really sensitive to grease, so the smallest amount of grease on the surface or your hands will stop it from sticking, so clean everything with alcohol first, wash your hands, then make a tiny hole without touching the surface around it (use globes or a clean plastic sheet to push the gasses out) and then apply the kapton tape and make sure to push it tight. (use the edge of a credit card or some plastic piece and scrape the surface of the tape until you see all the surface take a darker color, that means theres no air bubbles and the glue is making full contact with the surface of the battery)
      Kapton does stick but like i said its really finicky about grease. Also it does strick but very little. I use it to tighten the glass fiber isolation around the heater in my printers and even at 250ºC it doesnt come apart, so its all about knowing how to use it.
      A trick with kapton is to cut the piece longer than what you need so that you have room to grab it, stick the clean section, and then cut the ends with scissors or a surgical knife (they are really handy) which wouldnt stick because you touched it with your hands.

      I appreciate your concern for safety when it comes to dealing with swollen batteries. However, I respectfully disagree with your opinion that it's impossible to fix a swollen battery. There are actually some safe and effective ways to attempt to fix them, depending on the type of battery and the extent of the swelling. That being said, it's always important to take proper precautions and consult with a professional before attempting any DIY solutions. In some cases, it may indeed be safer and more practical to simply recycle the battery and invest in a new one. Ultimately, the decision depends on individual circumstances and preferences.
