Me too! I always followed the pattern exactly in the 1970s and 1980s, then got a bit ‘clever Mrs know it all’!!! I’m forever unpicking stuff 😂😂😂 Still love sewing all my own clothes and get lots of inspiration from SewRena. ❤

Of course I’ve done things that I Knew I would regret! That’s how lessons are reinforced!! Eventually I learned that shortcuts and skipping steps always show up in the way the finished garment looks and or fits. We all do it!

I fell in love with clothing construction in school in the early 60's . I made several A line skirts using beautiful pastel sailcloth ...I think you should makeone too!❤

@@SewRenathink of it this way: at least with clothing you have the option of a seam ripper. My poor mama was at wit's end this afternoon because after, as she put it, making pies since she was 24 years old (that's 62 years and counting), she tried making the America's Test Kitchen version of chocolate pecan pie, something she's been making most of my life. It was way more complicated and way more trouble, and she said she's never had a crust go so wrong. 😢 She was 4 and a half hours in by this point and already could tell that she wasn't going to put it in the church 🥧-making contest tomorrow after all, which was a big reason why she had decided to go with a recipe from the experts she watches every week rather than the delicious version she's been making for decades. Felt so bad for her, because no way was she starting over at that point. 🫂 I'm 🤞🏼 the finished product turned out better than it was looking like it would when I left her last night.
I adore this make!! 🤩💗 it came out so pretty and I love the wide collar. My “I know better” moment is I usually don’t make a mock up, I go straight to the pretty fabric and do my adjustments there. Then when I want to use the pattern again I have to do all the adjustments instead of having I saved muslin pattern that fits me. My mom has a saying, “lazy people work harder,” and I feel that 🥲😆
Thanks!!! Omg I have a similar moment I do the adjustments on the tissue then I take all the pins out fold up the tissue put it back then when I make it again. I have to tissue fit all over again.
well i am 63 years old and i just started back sewing the beginning of this year. i design and create canvas tote bags and accessories. as far as garments i made some fur vests and shirred dresses. one day i will get up the nerve to really get into sewing a fabulous garment. but i am enjoying your videos WONDERFUL! (anybody tell you, you resemble viola davis?) you put me in the mind of another CZcamsr the Closet Historian. she does vintage clothing too. you ladies are just too fabulous for words! KEEP ON DOING IT SWEETIE! YOU ALL INSPIRE ME!!!

Yes, this suit is everything! I've been sewing for three years and there are definitely times where I try to skip an essential step because I believe "It will be fine this time!" and then the seam ripper always comes out. :)

I'm 13, I've been sewing my whole life, and I sew historical and vintage clothes with my mom which I've been doing for about three years. I'm currently working on a 1940s blouse to go with a skirt I made, and then I'm going to start working on a longer project, a 1840s dress and all the proper undergarments including a corset and corded petticoat.

That's so fascinating getting a look at how the pink suit had those little wrinkles, because it's not something I ever would have consciously noticed as someone who doesn't sew, but once you inserted that illustrative contrast, I could better appreciate what you were saying about how nicely the color on this suit lies at the neck. 🧥
It's funny how the things you notice change once you know a subject better. I used to not know anything about makeup, but a few years later I can tell if an eyeshadow is going to be dusty just by looking at a photograph of it in the pan

I am 48 and remember my Mom teaching me to make a doll blanket when I was very young, so at least 40 years! I am 6'1" and was able to alter many of my rtw clothes in high school. It was so helpful! Yeah I was always do things I know I shouldn't. Why?????

I think you could pair them up with other items without too much trouble. The jacket would look adorable with a pencil style wool skirt for the winter. And by the same token you could pair the dress with a black jacket of the same style. I probably would wear it that way just to break up all the houndstooth pattern. However it is lovely the way you are wearing it as well! You did a beautiful job on it . Hope hubby ups his game when he has his beautiful wife on his arm. Not to sound sexist or anything. You could take on a role in The Office dressed like that. Maybe they should have called you for styling tips! 😁

Cutting fabric on the bias is my nemesis! I hate wasting fabric so like you I have tried to go against it many times (and it never works lol)! The suit is gorgous and I love this fabric. I have one in my stash and this winter I will definitely make something! 🥰
I have been sewing on and off for 20 years.pow wow dance regalia, then later street clothes. I have been focusing on classes that teach tailoring and dressmaking. I have learned that if I don’t do it “right”. I won’t be happy with it. It takes what it takes.

Your work is beautiful and if I procrastinate and think the oh it’s gonna be easy I can make it by tomorrow no never ever works at my age you would think I know by now but no I don’t. I still try and lose just like now it’s already November 11 and I said I was going to start sewing in July for Christmas ,have I a course not why because I know the magic mice are gonna help me to make 15 - 20 little gifts as I run to Walmart to get presents😂😂

Thank you! Learning have to make shoulder pads has been a game changer I even make little tiny pads for my toddlers so their winter coats look tailored.

I learned small hand sewing repairs as a child and am now trying to learn both machine sewing and pattern usage/adjustment in the last year
This pattern is awesome. The fabric choice was delicious for the style. You can do a lot with that dress. I'd like to see other pairings with the dress. I do have a confession. I hate side zippers and princess seams. While I'm starting to feel better about princess seams(technique improving) my body type WILL NOT 😫 allow a side zipper. I will continue to celebrate your mastery of the side zipper as well as notched collars and princess seams 👏🏾🔥. Thank you for the share.
Ive been sewing on and off all my life, but Ive only started learning how to sew properly, as in taking proper measurements, drafting dress blocks, lining and ironing my sewing projects, this year. I'm working on my first ever blazer/ coat/dress thing, which is how i came across this video. I'm not sure how itl come together but I'm trying to enjoy the learning process and not to be too harsh a critic of my own work.

For me it's with my mid arm, I'll cut corners with loading my quilt and then end up struggling when it doesn't lay flat 😂 but so far I just live with it since it'll work in the end either way

I so would change that pattern by having a center back seam & cutting the front in one piece - cause I not only hate side zippers but they really don’t work for me cause I’m pretty busty!!!!
I’ve been sewing since I was 8 so that’s over 6 decades - I have a bad habit of not doing muslins lol so that causes problems occasionally. What I mainly make nowadays is doll clothes - for BJDs - which are very detailed. I do muslins for them lol

So elegant. Will you tell us more about your seam finishes with this fabric? I'm curious about the notches you cut in the lapel seam allowance also.
I used a serger. The pattern has dots where you should cut to. So I stay stitch to the right and left of the dot then cut

I've been sewing for most of my life and yes I too will ignore that voice trying to save time and energy, sometimes I'm able to make it work, sometimes I have to go back and fix it, sometimes it's the death of a project.
