MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: A series of events called the menstrual cycle happens about once every month to prepare a woman's body for pregnancy. Changing levels of natural chemicals in the bloodstream, called hormones, control these events. The reproductive organs affected by these hormones include the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. The ovaries produce two main hormones called estrogen and progesterone. As the level of estrogen begins to rise, it causes the normally thick mucus inside the cervix to thin out. Estrogen also triggers other hormones to cause one of the ovaries to release an egg. This process is called ovulation. If a woman has sex during this time, a man's reproductive cells, called sperm, can pass through the thinner mucus to fertilize an egg. In the uterus, estrogen causes the lining to thicken, which prepares it to receive a fertilized egg. Rising progesterone levels cause glands in the lining to release fluid that feeds the fertilized egg. Progesterone also causes the thinned out mucus in the cervix to become thick again, which prevents sperm from passing through. If an egg hasn't been fertilized, the levels of both estrogen and progesterone begin to fall. This drop in hormone levels causes menstruation, a process where the uterus sheds its inner tissue lining and blood through the vagina. A progestin implant is a form of birth control or contraception. It prevents pregnancy for up to three years. The device is implanted under the skin in a woman's upper arm. A progestin implant is a matchstick size, flexible plastic rod containing a progesterone-like hormone called progestin. It's designed to be able to show up on x-rays. The implant continually releases progestin in the body. High progestin levels help prevent the body from releasing other hormones that cause ovulation. Without ovulation, there is no egg available for fertilization, so a woman can't get pregnant. A second way progestin prevents pregnancy involves its effect on the mucus in the cervix. High progestin levels keep the mucus in the cervix thick enough so sperm can't get through it. A third way progestin prevents pregnancy involves its influence on the lining of the uterus. In contrast to natural progesterone, progestin is slightly different chemically. Over time, it makes the uterine lining thinner instead of thicker. As a result, if fertilization of an egg does take place, the lining may be too thin for it to stay in the uterus, so it passes out of the body with the next menstrual period. A doctor can insert a progestin implant during an office visit. To do this, the doctor will make two marks with a sterile marker. One for the insertion site and a second mark used as a direction guide during insertion. Then the insertion area will be cleaned with an antiseptic and numbed with a local anesthetic. Next, the doctor will use a special applicator to puncture the skin with a hollow needle containing the implant and slide it beneath the skin. Finally, the needle will be removed, leaving the implant behind. After the implant is placed, the doctor will ensure proper placement by feeling for both ends of the implant under the skin. A bandage will be placed over the insertion site. Menstrual bleeding with a progestin implant may include changes in bleeding frequency, bleeding intensity, and duration of each bleeding period. Although the implant can be removed sooner, it must be removed after three years. A doctor can replace it with a new implant at that time. If pregnancy is suspected, it's important for a woman to see her health care provider. The implant may need to be removed. A progestin implant is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. This means less than 1 out of 100 women will become pregnant each year using this form of birth control. For more information on any type of birth control, talk to your health care provider.

I got the implant a little over a year ago, and I love it. For the first couple of months I didn’t have a period but now I do regularly like I did before I had it. My periods last a couple days shorter, and the only bad symptom I have is throughout the month I will feel like I have cramps, but not bad. I haven’t had any problems with acne, weight gain, or irritability. Everyone is different and I’m so glad I chose this. It gives me so much peace of mind for when my bf 💦 in me 😅
I’ve had mine for about 6 months and haven’t had a period either! I love mine. My bf (now ex) and I still used a condom, bc I’m a worry wart lol
Never seen the reproductive system modeled in 3D space this way before. Cool!
I’ve had this implant for about one month now. After doing research I decided to get it because it’s less chemicals released at once than the depo provera ( which my body hated). My pms symptoms went away for the most part within a week. But i have lost my appetite. I noticed slight pelvic cramping at times but idk if that’s the implant or pms. I’m going to journal each month on this and i encourage everyone to do the same. We are the studies for this thing and the doctors don’t tell you everything
Everyone’s response will probably be different because everybody just reacts differently. I first had mirena and hated it, it was uncomfortable anytime I moved and I felt it, I bled constantly, etc so I got it out in three months. I then tried nexplanon and loved it, I bled every now and then and gained a little bit of weight but that’s it.
How often was your every now and then? Im asking because i just got my period after being on nexplanon a year im terrified im going to keep bleeding due to not having a period a year
it was probably insertef wrong
This is amazing now I even understand why we have a menstrual cycle

It doesn’t bad anymore when you do it but after at the first time little bit pain and hormones allergies such as acne and blood like your period(depends on your body).
You see this? Yes. This is good. ❤
Great explanation👌
Thanks Implanon!!
It's crazy how complicated life can be
Nice Vodeo, Well shown, Thanks
best damn birth control ever, just got my second one in!
how many week should be effective after applying the implant?
@@maryjaneranis9548 it’s effective immediately hun
@@maryjaneranis9548 and u will never get a baby
@@kielenichols2303 it's more effective than the pill. 99.5% I believe. However, the side effects can be brutal (especially to people who have naturally light periods, spotting as a side effect is VERY common so people with light periods will probably hate it. People with painful periods I HIGHLY recommend)
LOVE FROM PAKISTAN.I LIKE YOUR CHANNAL REALLY. THANKS MAM.

Exactly what I’m experiencing on Nexplanon implant right now. 😣 Been bleeding heavily for 10 days now.
@@rhechellaspera5466 i just had mine removed yesterday after bleeding for about 5 months straight
do high levels of progestine inhibit libido?
So informative
thanks
You really need to discuss this with your doctor. If you plan to breastfeed that will limit which type of birth control you an use.
Lovely video. So, the implant didn't stop the process of estrogen producing. Only progestin may cause uterus liner to be thinner inorder not to attach fertilizer. That is why menstruation occur in women who were implanted .Is that right?
Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩😍❤️❤️
I have had it for one year and liked it so far, it has even stopped my periods
It stopped my period a year and i just got my period again, i hope this is the only period n i dont bleed again for another year😭
Update still bleeding getting it taken out next month been bleeding since june 30th its now almost October
@theyanarose8379 If the bleeding isn't too terrible, try increasing your estrogen consumption. Your doctor might prescribe you estrogen pills or the regular birth control pill to take for a little while to balance out your hormones. However, possibly just drinking 2 cups of soymilk a day might help. I've only had my nexplanon for 2 months, endless spotting, really don't want to take the pill cuz it always makes me sick. I started drinking soymilk and it's suddenly stopped spotting. Idk if it's a coincidence or connected, but I'd rather drink soymilk than go on more drugs
@@NinjaKittkatt ill try soymilk, the reason I was thinking about getting it out is because I’ve already tried birth control pills it didnt stop it ive been on estrogen patches a month now and it only stopped it a week and im back having heavy bleeding. Im also anemic so the constant bleeding has made me really sick. Ill try soymilk and i seen a herb called sheppards purse they say to help stop excessive bleeding so im going to try that to. I really just want it out i dont have sex alot only a few times a year so getting on the pill wouldnt be bad but i dont want to bleed for a whole year
Another update i kept my nexplanon in the bleeding eventually stopped while i was prescribed junel fe birth control pills now my period comes on 7 days then goes off on its own I choose when my period comes on whenever i stop taking the bc my period comes on 7 days then i start taking the pills when it’s gone. I decided to keep it in because compared to all the birth control’s its the best option for my lifestyle im glad i toughed it out because it got better
Pls do vedio on ankylosing spondylitis

Glad to hear that
I’m considering this as my first choice of birth control because I know I hate taking pills and i don’t know why but I’m also turned off to an IUD, so this method just seems easier to insert and remove when I want it removed.
I have done IUD very uncomfortable and I got pregnant. Took it out went on birth control pill Junel ●Fe got pregnant. I going to try this hopefully it works better that the other two🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
me too. i’ve never been on birth control and since abortion is now illegal in my state, i thought it would be best to get on it. i have appt on next tuesday to get this implant. im really nervous bc i don’t wanna be one of those women who bleed continuously after getting it. 😖 i hope it will be okay for me
@@metal.kittens update ?
definitely get nexplanon!
this is the best!! ive been on it ever since my daughter was born 7 yrs ago and got replaced twice and its been very effective..the only thing was the bleeding at first until your body gets used to it and the headaches and of corse the gain weight..but its very good tbh..protects against pregnancy
After seeing Ik that estrogen causes discharge yeah I have it 1 year waiting for my first periods my friends got it still not me I started puberty 3 years ago
