“Ruin has come to our family.”
In this adaptation of Red Hook’s acclaimed Darkest Dungeon video game, you strive to cleanse a manor and its surroundings of all manner of evil: hordes of the undead, foul beasts and eldritch abominations... And, finally, either at death’s door or at your wit’s end, you will have to uproot evil itself from the darkest dungeon.
Darkest Dungeon is a fully cooperative dungeon crawl game in which players take on the role of adventurers. Although brave and determined, adventurers are only human! They are prone to the madness and pain the twisted dwellers of the dungeons will inflict upon them. Death can occur, but is not the worst fate: heroes can be driven mad and beyond help!
The game is played in campaigns of 11 missions. To reach the Darkest Dungeon itself, players will undertake 3 missions per threat level and vanquish the boss. Then, they will be strong enough and face the horrors of the Darkest Dungeon! They may emerge victorious... if they dispatch the source of evil that plagues the land.
For each hero, select 3 skills out of 7 before heading into your mission (and level the heroes up to gain access to more skills). In each room, pick the most suitable stance to best resolve the conflict! Then, on each turn, a player chooses two of the available actions of moving, interacting with the environment, changing their stance or using a skill (if eligible for their current stance). Triumph over encounters, resist rampant madness and emerge victorious before throwing yourself into another battle. Between missions, spend your time in the hamlet, visiting various buildings to find relief from the physical and mental trauma you’ve just endured. Restore the hamlet to its former glory and it will reward you and help you to fulfill the ultimate goal.

I might be thinking too superficially, but looking at this game, I get the same feeling I get from looking at Frostpunk-I wish this were a video game instead.
Actually, I feel this way for any game that advertises itself as having 400+ tokens! 1000+ cards! Computers are very good at managing all of those tokens.
Maybe these types of games are just not for me.

I feel, in many ways, that Darkest Dungeon is the poster child of how not to translate a videogame to a tabletop game.
From the awkward translation from a 2D line-up battle to a traditional minis on a tile battle, to the literal interpretation of all elements (player boards, village locations, etc.), the table-top translation from the video game was done as a one-on-one process, rather than looking into what strengths and weaknesses every genre exhibits and capitalizing on those at a higher design level.
At least, this is how it seems - I may very well be wrong. Let me just say this: the overview of components speaks volumes. This looks like someone pulled out all the little bits of the videogame and literally built a cardboard chit for every one of them, resulting in a swamp of fiddly little rules and exceptions that turn an exciting confrontation into a bookkeeping campaign.
As strange as it sounds, if Mythic had essentially mashed together the digital calculation and immersive audio/video of Mansions of Madness and the easy and elegant onboarding, map-books and minis/standee mix of Gloomhaven-Jaws of the Lion, then they would have done a far better job than this behemoth of mechanics and components.

Just hoping to have a friendly discussion, but I wanted to respond to some aspects of your perspective.
In terms of the 2D to the 3D, I thought they did a nice balance with keeping the important 2D aspect, in terms of positioning and abilities, while presenting a visually stimulating situation for the gamers. Having played tabletop RPGs, my players and friends often appreciate a more physical and tangible manifestation of their actions. If they remained with the 2D aspect, both new gamers and old would be disappointed. For the new, see above, for the old, meaning ones played the video game, I would want something unique or different from the Video Game. I would have felt it would have just been a copy and paste if they just kept it 2D.
As for the tokens and fiddly bits, I won't deny that it seems like a lot of tokens. But personally, I like keeping track of it and all it takes is one bookkeeper-type person in the group to help keep track of it for the other players to be able to really get into the meat of enjoying and customizing their character to their play style. By giving each player an individual character it provides a more visceral connection to their character, thus creating that excitement and dread of exploring the dungeon. Another interesting change for the board game is the change from wanting to explore the entire dungeon, to more going in for shorter confrontations to get what you need and get out. This keeps the tactical battles quick and exciting, and then once you get down all of the symbols, the transitory spaces become the area you need to sit back and reevaluate. I think the developer also mentioned that they wanted to highlight the more rogue-like aspect of the game. So if you fail you can easily restart and it won't be as devastating. I'm not sure if this means they'll implement a kind of check-point system after defeating each boss, but that could be something easily house-ruled.
Very much interested to hear your thoughts on this. I think this discussion helps everyone as it shows the pros and cons of the game, and also helps me think through why I like it instead of just saying it looks cool.

I think they could've changed the map with the tokens into a deck of cards that you flip over telling you what to set up and how many room choices you get next. That would heavily reduce the amount of tokens right away and still have the randomness of the rooms but also add more "scouting" mechanics by revealing the next cards you would flip. Too many tokens and fiddly bits (which I have enough of with big games like Descent 2. Edition for example which has the barest amount of tokens but still takes up a lot of space due to the size of the dungeons).

  • @JodouTR
    @JodouTR Před 3 lety +24

The irony in all this is the board game is the EXACT design they scrapped before moving to a 2D, where the game took off design-wise. This 'downgrade' feels that way because it completely is. This game will be extremely fiddly and there's no reason for me to play this over the exceptional videogame.
And my god I could not imagine playing this as a group. Trying to get a friends into this when you're a master at it, will lead to being alpha for necessity of survival.
I'll definitely be sticking to the videogame for my fix; good breakdown and good luck to those brave enough to buy it.

Darkest dungeon I don't know, sounds pretty deep and its likely to get deeper and bigger via crimson court and I think they are planning another couple of expansions as well... I've never backed a mythic game before and know they often have issues but they are improving and this one is speaking loudly too me... I'm also leaning towards Townsfolk Tussle. As someone who owns *all* of the KDM gameplay items I'm looking for something to sneakily transition some of my lighter gaming friends to KDM lol. For Darkest Dungeon, it looks amazing, but I'm not super impressed with Mythics delivery record, although their quality seems on point. I may pick it up in a few years when/if it's more readily available.

@@robertmcgehee7279 They did state this is a KickStarter only game. So unless you are going to pick it up off the secondary market it likely wont be available. Having said that I am on the fence for this one as well. I will Back Townsfolk Tussle, and I am also on the fence about FrostPunk. So many high profile Kickstarters this month. The only thing that might tip me into this is I like to paint the minis :)

@@Melinikus Yeah, atm I have a 1 dollar pledge that may get cancelled, with debates on going secondary market post kickstarter. The quality of the whole thing looks great, their delivery history just gives me pause.

For me it feels too similar to the video game. The characters, the enemies, the rooms, everything. I would like to see something extra or something that we have not seen in the video game.

Just to much for me. Time. Table space. Money. I already have or have backed enough dungeon crawls.
    Qvack.

It would have been nice if you had played a couple of fake typical rounds (not a 2h slow play-through)... I simply cannot grasp how a game feels simply by hearing someone describing it...

Looks too much of a 1 for 1 copy of the digital game. It's just cleaner, less fiddly, and cheaper ($15?) to get the videogame. I hoped that they would try something more ambitious and different with this boardgames design
