  • Remember when creating a Franken tree, as some call a fruit salad tree, you can only graft the same kinds together. You cannot graft apples to peaches but you can graft peaches, plums, and apricots on one tree because they are all stone fruit. Apple’s and pears usually don’t graft together but some will. I have an example of this in my other video: for more info on compatibility, check my other video part 3 on grafting.

    Thanks so much, since my grafts this year got fried my rootstock is going to be way bigger than my scionwood, I think I will try your option 2. 😁

    Great as always! I like the idea of using the tape as a lable.

    Thanks for the great videos, Nick. After watching, went to the orchard to do 8 grafts to start making a Frankentree. Not as easy as you make it look. I'll keep practicing! Good thing I have plenty of scionwood!

    That was immensely helpful thank you! Clears up some outstanding questions I had around grafting and taping approaches

    Hey Nick, now that you've been doing this a while, what is the best technique you've found for grafting onto an existing tree? What graft technique has the greatest strength and doesnt break? Where on a branch is best to graft, etc?

    • @nickkasko2097
      @nickkasko2097  Před rokem +1

      Best branch to graft onto is one that has apical dominance.
      Best technique is one that best suits the diameter you are grafting to and with. Trunk to scion diameter
      1:1 = whip graft
      2:1 = side graft
      4:1 or larger = bark graft
      Greatest strength is a whip and tongue graft but any graft done on small diameter wood will be strong at year two or 3.

    I've grafted wynoochee on your recommendation. Hopefully it does well here in Ireland. 👍

      Sorry to inform you but my labels were swapped and my video on Wynoochy is actually a Rebella and vice versa. Both great apples but Wynoochy is earlier and doesn’t keep as well. Wynoochy also has way less acidity.

    I have a plum graft on my cherry tree I just attached yesterday. How long do I leave the film on?

      I’m sorry to say that your plum graft on cherry will die in few years even if it takes this year. Gotta graft your plums to plums. The tape can come off as soon as it begins to restrict the graft. Sometimes it’s in July and sometimes later.
