  • Boats are expensive so we decided to visit Walmart and pickup our first Kayak, we had two brands and models in mind the Lifetime Tamarack Angler 100 & Sundolphin Bali 10 SS. We ended buying the Lifetime Tamarack Angler 100 Kayak and took it to Biscayne National Park for an on the water review. Hope you all enjoyed this Vlog remember to Like, Comment, Share & Subscribe! Basic Kayak Modifications & Gear:
0... Clip your stuff to your boat, except anchor - seriously.
    1. Watertight Box ,brightly colored, for phone, wallet, keys, etc.
    2. Pool Noodles in sidewalls or rear hatch. This makes your kayak recoverable at the surface when you sink it.
    3. Upgrade handle mounts to dock cleats or eye bolts w/ washers. The little screws provided will tear out.
    4. Attach anchor* using a cleat.
    6. Add eye bolts for easy clip on, tow, securement.
    7. Caribeaners and floating rope.
    8. Drill drain hole in cup holder.
    9. Cut pool Noodles into short sections to make cheap floats. Tie floats to everything.
    10. Add pad eyes everywhere!
    11. Add 6" pool noodle trough center of paddle as float.
    Basic Fishing Gear & Mods:
    1. Flush mount pole holder.
    2. Anchor* cleat / trolley system
    3. Mount a pool noodle to stab your hooks and lures into for easy access.
    4. Fishing rod floats, because you can't paddle upstream while you unsnag a line. You can drop pole in and paddle up for recovery in case leash pops off (and it will rip off if current pulls boat away from snag)
    5. 6" length pool noodle slid over fish net handle as float.
    BIG Safety Tips:
    1. Tuck POOL NOODLES into sidewalls or rear hatch to make sure when it tips, it floats and can be recovered. It does no good to secure all your equipment to a boat that sinks with all your things!
    2. *DO NOT KNOT your anchor... Cleat it down so you can quickly release if it snags or you're in trouble. Attach float to anchor end-line to find the end of it for recovery.
    3. Plan route and know where the dams / falls are, when the water eddys form, and have a PFD.
    Helpful Tips:
    1. Add leashes and floats to gear / paddles / etc.
    2. Sit in your kayak (on land) as you test for your mods. Practice getting in/out to see when your footing is.
    3. Don't put hardware where you lean back to rest your arms.
    4. Keep in mind limited reach from seat.
    5. Sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.
    6. Umbrellas can work as a sail, both good and bad.
    7. Selfie with serial number in case stolen, register online, sharpie name hidden inside.

I have the same kayak purchased last year. Here's some mods I did you may find useful.
-Inspected it thoroughly for defects. Vacuumed shavings out of compartment (lots).
-Unscrewed all screws and re-set them with silicone sealant/adhesive.
-Put velcro on the hatch btween the legs and velcroed a small gear basket to it for bait, a few lures, lip grip, scissors, etc.
-Tied a waterproof bag (wallet, fish license, food, etc) to the hook btween the feet and put it in the hatch. The cover can close over the draw string. Another mesh bag with the drinks goes down there too.
-Used two plastic bottle caps, wrapped some duct tape around them and wedged them into the rear scuppers on the seat as water would come up thru there and wet the seat area.
-Use a USCG throw-able floatation square as a seat cushion.
-Use a (chest level) kayak life jacket and keep my (somewhat water proof) cellphone in it. Easy to keep and reach it there.
-Put a milk crate or 5 gal pail behind the seat to hold fish. Cooler can also go back there but its difficult to reach the lid.
-Installed a plastic Yak cleat in the waist area (easy reach)
-Put a sun umbrella in a rod holder attached to the milk crate in back to fish in the shade.
-Bought a 4lb anchor and polyprope line (floats) to anchor. Run the line thru a snap clip I put in the stern so I can fish downwind. It's cleated off at the waist and keeps the boat aligned, pointing downwind.. When I pull anchor I just paddle backwards until the line is floating next to me then pull it the anchor and store it and line between my feet. I take out the slack to the stern clip and cleat it off to keep the line from going out the stern. I also have a clip in the bow but I only use that for tie-down for roof transport.
-Made a roof carrier out of 4 pool noodles and rope, lol. The 2x 6" fat noodles are on the roof under the kayak and the 2x 3" noodles go over the kayak, thru the open doors and clip inside the cab. They can be tightened while driving by just pulling down on them. Pretty sure I have the only pink, purple, blue and green kayak roof carrier in existence.
It's a good mangrove kayak. I agree, it moves and tracks well.

      @McScott76 Před 5 lety +1

Good list. I've made a lot of similar mods to mine. One suggestion for you would be to consider installing an anchor trolley. It's simple to install and allows you to change the position of the anchor very easily without the need to paddle around. Sometimes you want it all the way to the stern, but I've also found that I sometimes need it at the bow (depending on currents and/or wind direction). With the trolley, it takes like 3 seconds to make that change.

Sitting next to my friend looking for a kayak, he wants to see all the things you didn't show lol. I have to agree... I wanted to see you pack your gear, wanted to see fitting/strapping the kayak on top of the car, and see how you manage to fish once you're out there. We both assumed the title of the video meant recommendations for buying a higher-quality kayak for a Walmart price (indicating an interesting skill or tips to know about)... not just buying a kayak from Walmart (which anyone can do), hahaha.

great video review. Nice to see you cater to the reality that a lot of people would first try the more affordable option to get in to the hobby. instead of dismissing it as "lower class" you gave it legit props for what it is, a great little boat at an affordable entry price. And already you are on the water while others wait around to buy some high end plastic without knowing if it even suits em

Also remember that the one thing that makes a Kayak move straighter and track easier in the water are the "Number of Strakes" on the bottom of the Kayak! Strakes are the extruded longitudinal lines you see on the bottom's of many Boat's and Air Boat's! Without them, the Watercraft would be harder to steer and keep straight in the water!

I bought the sundolphin bali 12 about 6 months ago, my first one as well. Im 6"4 and a shade under 300 lbs..(I live minutes away from Lake michigan and several surrounding lakes) I've put at least 100 hours on her this summer, I think I can help give you some tips based on my experiences... number 1, a definite must, I have a paddle kayak also, and never really considered a pedal drive because of the price and I didn't know how much I would loove it! But an anchor system is the smartest adjustment I made. Hence my size, on even a slightly breezy day I'm just a mini sailboat floating out there... drifting made it almost impossible to fish any banks without having to constantly adjust and potentially spook the fish I was targetting. Number 2, you mentioned your butt getting wet, Instead of a raised seat, which raises your center of gravity, which reduces stability... I found a 4 inch soft foam flat pfd that meets our states requirements... which keeps me dry, and I don't need to keep a vest! 3, my bali has 2 rod holsters angled out and back just behind the seat, I don't use them for rod holsters, I use them to mount my outriggers. With my size, I couldn't really access the back or front compartments without feeling like I could tip at any moment.... so, I watched some videos on CZcams, and connected some pvc pipe to some pool noodles, got the outriggers adjusted to how deep I sat in the water, and now I can literally access all storage, and I can even stand, and sight fish the banks with no fear of tipping! I can lay down and take a nap on 4 foot rollers out on the big lake, no concern at all. Plus it cost me about 20 bucks, and I can remove or add it in about 60 seconds. Lastly, enjoy man! They're soo awesome! They're therapeutic, relaxing, exciting, refreshing, invigorating, rejuvinating, great excercise, takes you back to nature. It's the perfect pasttime, hopefully the tips will help you, cheers man. Peace. P.s. I'm saving up for one of them 3000 dollar pedal kayaks after how much I enjoyed my first one! Peace duder.

Mark Christopher, 300 is about the max weight for these. Add another 15 lbs for clothes and 20 to 30 for gear and you’ll be floating so low in the water it’ll make you hate the sport. Save your money and get a 12 to 14 footer. They had up to 600 lbs and have great stability. Try renting a kayak for a while to see if it’s worth investing in.

I have the eight foot kayak for $150.00 (Red colored one)....Weight limit is 250 lbs and weight of kayak is 38 lbs....It is super stable for this 64 year old man....I only use it in ponds where there are no boats with gas engines....Just wanted to let you guys know that you can buy a six pack of foam practice golf balls that fit just right in the scupper holes....Wal-Mart has them....six balls for three bucks and they can be pulled out very quickly if the need arises....I would also suggest that you buy a thin comfortable life jacket that you can wear all the time....The location you have yours in would most likely be completely useless when you flip your boat, and notice I said when you flip your boat, not if....Loved the video and subscribed....Be careful guys and enjoy the great outdoors!😎

I have the Emotion Stealth Angler 11 (also made by Lifetime), and I absolutely love it. It's similar to the Tamarack but 11-foot rather than 10-foot. It cost me about $350 at Cabela's. I wanted something I could use in both fresh and saltwater (inshore) and possibly even offshore on a calm day. I'm not sure if I'd trust it offshore, but I've had it in choppy intracoastal shipping channels and had no problems whatsoever. For the price, you can customize the heck out of it, set it up the way you like it and still pay a fraction of what a Jackson, Hobie or other high-end fishing kayak would cost you. I put an anchor system on mine, added a mounting system for additional rod holders, GoPros, etc, put in an additional access hatch to enable more hull storage, and added a nice Garmin GPS fish finder with thru-hull transducer. Even with all that, I've spent less than $700 total for a very tricked-out kayak loaded with everything I need ($200 of that was the fishfinder). Honestly, the only reason I'd ever consider upgrading is if I want to be able to stand and fish, or to switch to a pedal-system kayak.

Hi Julian, I sold my bay boat (Mako 1901) several years ago and got into kayak fishing. Best decision I ever made. Less is more when it comes to kayak fishing. Through the years I've continued to trim down my kayak setup and now have a garage full of kayak stuff I don't use. By the way, there is always something bigger and better on the other side of the lake. Don't peddle, paddle!

Through the years I've had several ocean kayaks, a perception, and a fell free lure and determined that the tarpons are the best for me. I found them to be the best combo of lightness, seat comfort, and speed. My buddy at work swears with the Pelican kayaks. It's about what you like and can carry in your car. I fish about 80% fresh water and 20% salt now. Tight Lines.

My friend got a great deal on an Emotion Stealth Angler for $380.00 which paddles a little faster, but for the price, I'm very happy with my Lifetime Tamarak.

Always wear a life jacket. Anything can happen. Prepare for the worst by running scenarios. I.e. getting run over by a powerboat, trying to paddle away, no time to put on vest, hull hits you in the head and knocks you out. The difference between a concussion and death can be measured by preparation and a bit of discomfort.

We have two of these and they have been great around the mangroves and bays on the Tampa side. The paddles that come with it really need to be replaced but do great if speed isn't a main concern. The built in rod holders are a plus and the best back rest for the price point.

I have a 12 ft lifetime tandem. It's sub optimal once you get really into the sport. But it got me into the sport for an affordable price. And it has got me through some nasty weather (2 to 3 ft storm swells/ 20 plus mph head winds) when I was caught on the water. And I made it out without losing any gear. And I've never tipped it. I've even stood up on it, and I'm 6'5".Perfect entry level yak. You'll wanna replace the seat tho.
