Unfortunately this only works if you live in a big city. Otherwise you have to travel just to get the visa. Basically excludes many people from traveling to China.

I'm a Brazilian living in Canada under an open work permit and I was wondering if that affects much. Would bringing a copy of my permit instead of a PR be enough?

The passport photo requirements are so specific! My mom used to be a travel agent and the stories she told me about taking them were wild!
