  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 introduces a new feature called Swing Assist. It basically brings a level of challenge in the core mechanic of the game, the Swinging. Swing Assist can be set anywhere between 0-10. Although its really difficult to show the difference in the gameplay with Swing Assist 0 to 10, I have tried to give a basic idea here.
    When swing assist is at 10, swinging is automatic like Spider-Man 1. You just need to hold the forward stick and directional stick and Spider-Man will move through the world effortlessly. Physics, tension, web bending are not applied to swinging. It doesn't matter which building your web actually attaches to. Spidey will also never fall. The height of the swing doesn't matter much with swing assist turned to 10
    When swing assist is at 0, swinging becomes much more manual. You have to constantly adjust your direction and orientation to go in the right way. You will be swung in a completely wrong direction if you simply hold forward. Physics, tension and the building your web is attaching to comes into play. Spidey will also fall to ground more often if there is not enough tension on the webs or not high enough. All these factors are changed incrementally going from anywhere
    Between 1-9.
    In both here, I am holding the forward stick. With swing assist set to 10 I am not having to adjust my other directional stick. But with swing assist set to
    0, I am required to hold both and orient myself in the correct direction otherwise Spidey falls and goes in the wrong way as you can see here.

      Seems like even with Swing Assist at 0, when you hit a wall Spidey just switches to wall run. Is it true?

    I feel like they should've implemented the Web of Shadows' system where upon reaching the ground while swinging you continue to hold onto your web as you run so that there isn't an abrupt stop when you accidentally hit the streets.

      They probably thought of this but it would probably feel quite unrealistic in this game. Since the swing speed is so high spiderman might not be able to run at the same speed as his fastest swings so it would feel awkward.
      Also the web tension is realistic here often when the lowest point of the swing makes u touch the ground, it might still be low tension even if he run. So its best to avoid doing that in the first place.
      They couldve added some temporary momentum to running when u land from a swing with lots of momentum instead of rolling on the ground and returning to normal run/walk speed.

      Insomniac did a phenomenal job with the settings in this game. With that said 10 steps might be overkill without a detailed description, because it's hard to even notice what changes between each one of them.

      Yeah, I like this new standard of tweaking the game feel to your liking. Sonic Frontiers had an extensive sweet of options like that too, and it made the game much more fun for me to get around after tweaking the controls to my perfect settings.

    Insomniac made a great feature. A lot of people prefer natural swing with physics and rules. However, a lot of people also prefer nice and simple swinging like in Spider-man 2018. So, in new game game devs give us a choice: you can choose style of swinging which you like and also you have a chance to try another one. My respect to Insomniac!

      Its also a thing in 2018 game, they said in an interview that its bumped to 10, so there is nothing stopping them patching it to give an option.

    Manual swinging is definitely challenging but getting good with it makes the swinging experience so much more rewarding than Spider-Man 1 could have ever been.

      I think ppl who have played Spiderman 2 for ps2 will find 0 very manageable. This is a feature i was very much looking forward to.

      I couldn't make it work since I felt like the web doesn't attach to the direction I'm pushing the stick in... that'd be such a vital part of manual swinging that when you push left and want it to stick to the left building, but are closer to the building to the right and it sticks to the right, it's just very messy to try and work around...

    Lower assistance is fun, but I do wish there was more control to where Spidey places his webs. A lot of the time he keeps making his webs too long when swinging low, which ends up with him hitting the ground and stopping all momentum.

      I think the ability to climb up the web line on command while swinging would be great (to shorten the length of the web). The animations for that are already in game (but he never does it with swing assist off), so why not give us the option to do it on cue?

      You can place his webs anywhere just use your aim/slowmo button and aim where you want your web to stick then release aim and press web swing button. Works pretty much everytime, then once you get the hang off that just start aiming your webs without the slowmo and you should be sweet. I haven't played sm2 yet but it works in sm1 and miles. I reckon the slowmo aim would be extra helpful with the speeds you can achieve now on sm2. Can't wait to play it!

    This is awesome! I’ve always wanted more of a challenge when swinging. I love the original but I always felt there was a bit too much automation. This and the inclusion of fall damage are going to make swinging a risky and rewarding thrill. Can’t wait to get my hands on this. Thanks for the vid

      What's sad is I see many people complaining that the pendulum hits the ground all the time when you try to swing low... I'm here like *Facepalm* THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT, 0 Assist makes you THINK like spider-man, actually use logic, and understand physics and plan your height and target and think where it's suitable to swing/zip/point launch or just glide, i think the option is phenomenal, and it's for seasoned players and those who TRULY Want to feel like spider-man and that they are the ones in control, instead of just Brain-dead button holding and auto actions.

    I set swing assist to 0 and turned fall damage on and I'm having so much fun actually having to use my brain. Swing assist 10 is obviously good, cause the past games had great swinging; however, the extra challenge, stakes, and realism makes the game more immersive and engaging for me. Don't let people scare you from trying 0 swing assist, it's honestly not as hard as people make it seem, maybe because I used to play the old Spider-Man 2 and have been used to it? but it's a great way to change things up.

      @indie_gamer7 Yeah, I hate that kinda attitude. People enjoy games for different reasons, and some people don't want that much of a challenge, which is okay. The older I've gotten, the more I've learned that gaming should be fun at the end of the day. It's a hobby. If you wanna play on the easiest difficulty and put swing assist on 10 because you just wanna experience the story and have a power fantasy, that's fine; I personally wouldn't find it engaging since I like more of a challenge, but still a valid way to play.

    Manual makes you think about your swings a lot more, you have to be closer to buildings at higher speeds to get a good swinging arc and you have to use the glider and web zip to cover distance when there aren’t any high buildings around. It feels like a good combination of the ps2 era Spider-Man games and Spider-Man ps4.

    Played the whole game with swing assist at 0, definitely more difficult but I also feel it allowed for more complex maneuvers and just felt better once you get the hang of it

    Something between 1-3 would be perfect for me. Far more physics based with less safeguards but still with enough control to feel how I want it to. Picking my copy up in half an hour, so damn excited

      1 is the best if you want all the physics but don't want to slam into the ground. I personally run 0 cause slamming into the ground by accident going full speed is hilarious to me xD

    I thought I was pretty good at swinging in the first game, so I started off on 0 Swing Assist. It's not difficult or anything but I did mess up a bit more and didn't feel like using it for more than 5 minutes. 10 feels too automatic for me, so I've been playing on 5. It feels great imo

    I'm just gonna dump my observations with Swing Assist off since not many people are talking about it on CZcams.
    After experimenting with it, i notice only on 0, you will land on the ground if you dont get enough height. From 1-10 you will get that little hover above the ground if you press R2 as low to the ground as possible, meaning you cant fall out of a swing.
    So technically you can intentionally end your swing into a walk by swinging low enough on 0.
    And the difference between 1-9 is how much you pull towards the building that your line is attached too.
    I think on 0, you have to press R2 when youre falling after a swing to gain speed where and not after you jump out of the swing. So like a pendulum, if thats the right analogy.
    So for example a swing is like a wave with the crest being the top and the trough being at the bottom (or pendulum). On 0, you have to also pay attention where in the swing you need to shoot the next web. If you shoot it at the beginning of the crest of the swing (after you release the web and as you're getting height but before you're falling) you will not gain speed and will slow you down. You have to shoot the next web at the end of the crest as your transitioning into the trough of the swing so gravity and your momentum aids you and thus will help you swing faster.
    But you gotta keep all of that in mind and also make sure you have enough height so you don't fall out of the swing and compensate for the angle when youre swinging towards a building the web line is attached to.

    I like it. On swing assist 0 it looks like your web is straining and breaking at times. It's also pretty easy to see when you're going past the park around 2:35 that you're being pulled in the direction your web is attached to and the physics of your swing would be naturally moving you towards.
    It makes me think back to near the end of the first game when Peter was asking Miles certain math questions about pendulums and force and swinging them and explains that those things are extremely important when you are the pendulum. It's going to make you feel even more like Spider-Man when you're also subtly doing similar calculations as him when you're trying to maneuver around the city web slinging.

    Only thing missing really is running through the ground and buildings while web swinging. I’m glad for all these features. As soon as it was gameplay I put the assist on 0 and it made playing the game a joy compared to ps4 and miles morales

    I turned on fall damage and put swing assist to 0 immediatly and it feels incredible, it really makes the swinging more engaging and makes the badass manouvers feel more earnt and thoughtful

      Do you have any tips on how to get off the ground reliably? Whenever I try to start swinging from low down, I keep hitting the ground and I don't want to run to the top of a tower everytime I want to swing

      @@lacuna3693 ill usually start by either doing a charged jump (R2+X) so im already high up before starting swinging or ill point launch off a near by object first (L2+R2 then X) so i have lots of height and forward momentum first

      @@lacuna3693I find in early game that just jumping while holding R2 works when in the taller cities, letting go a while later while swinging allowing you to gain height.
      point launches also work well, as stated by the comment above, but i prefer to use the new launch mechanic due to it allowing me to gain a lot of speed quickly

    On top of this swing assist feature, Insomniac went ahead and developed the best fast travel system to date. Like, it’s genuinely incredible how well-implemented the fast travel is.
    Just unfortunate it’s in Spider-Man 2, a game with incredibly fun movement.

    Something not mentionned in the video is swing assist set to 1. You lose pretty much all the assist except for ground collision. When cars are present, you will not collide with them, but you will land on trucks.

      That's what I play on lol. Got annoying not being able to swing at street level without hitting the ground. I don't wanna have to charge jump or slingshot each time I start swinging ya know.

    This guy is really doing the most basic swinging. I used to hate the momentum and physics of the first game, but you can REALLY go fast and far if you hold onto your webs longer and time your dives right

My only complaint is that i wish Spidey would run a little bit when he hits the ground while swinging as long as youre still holding down the web swing button. And when theres really no momentum left, he lets go of the web(much like in Spider-Man 2 PS2). Him letting go of the web instantly feels too abrupt

    The funniest thing happened when I had fall damage and assist mode on low. I jumped off a building to do a loop de loop and with the momentum I got from the fall I slammed myself back to where I jumped off dying instantly 🤣

    I tried 0 as soon as I initially saw the game settings. Couldn’t really get to enjoying it that low, but I did play with 5 on Spectacular.
    Having it in the middle actually feels decent and I can’t go back to 10

    Like it's a cool feature and I get it. I'm just glad they give you the option to choose because I don't feel like I need to micromanage swinging in a Spider-Man game. Especially since there's usually a whole lot of other things going on.

    Thank GOD. The swinging in the first game honestly became boring as there was no skill ceiling. It required 0 effort to get around. This is makes the navigation more engaging and fun.

    Its definitely quite a difference. I didnt notice the directional aspect of the change as much but i think its cuz ive always tried to point my way with the other games. That being said, it's definitely more challenging. Youll really notoce it first time your doing a chase mission. as a seasoned spider man 1 and MM player i was falling behind. Very excited to master it tho as it feels way better already.

    At 0 assistance you have to perform dives more often to get more momentum and speed while also being aware of not getting too close to the ground. It's so much more fun with no assistance imo

    This is really amazing. As someone who is into game design I love seeing the way the swinging is implemented. One thing I wonder, does it seem like the animators had to speed up the transitions between the animations? I know spidey moves fast so he has to be animated quickly but it almost feels like a jump cut happens between animations. Am I seeing things or do other people see that?

    I've found the sweet spot for me is 3-4 for swing assist. All the way to 0 can be a bit frustrating at times, but 3 seems to give just enough grace to the player while also requiring more precision and skill. Thanks for the comparison!

    They should just add the ability to run on the ground and other things while web swings so if u have it set to zero he doesn’t just stop swinging BUT this should be done in a manual way by holding o while still holding the swing button. So if im swinging and i see im too low to the road I would press and hold O and he will run until he can get that upward momentum back.

      @@Young_Wrath you realize this mechanic was in sm2 on the ps2? Spiderman has done this move in movies and comics, and notice how i said you as the player would have to manually input the move thus keeping it skill based because you can use it to string together cool tricks. If you arent quick enough on your controller input he will not do the move thus stopping your momentum.

    can't play it, but i'm happy to see they improved the admittedly lacking web swinging of the original. now you have to use your brain while swinging if you want to be efficient or look cool, and i love that. maybe the next game will have (optional) manual aiming and even harsher pendulum physics so we can have a truly hardcore web swinging game.

    I got pretty good at manual swinging after getting the symbiote suit and turning swing assist to zero. Finished the game with that setting and i feel like my swinging was more accurate, fast and stylish especially throwing a few loop-de-loops in

    Man, Its great they implemented a more manual swing option, but is still missing a crucial feature, Spider-Man dont lose all momentum while hitting the ground, It doesn't make sense. In previous games they got that right and implemented a running animation with the web still in your hands. I agree the momentum should stop If you miscalculate too much, but sometimes you can clearly see the player hit the ground for an inch and yet the game just abrupts cut all the speed.

      I thought for sure they would let us do the hand slide like in the first game cutscene. That’s literally the most obvious way to fix it since they have water sliding. The cars probably prevent its inclusion though

    I noticed playing, what it does it it makes it so 0 assist means you go towards where the web is on whatever building it chose to be on, whereas with 10 it doesn’t matter where your web is on the building, you swing perfectly straight, at first it was hard but now I like to use 0 assists because you can actually pretty much choose what building to shoot your web to and you’ll know exactly how you’re going to move in accordance, my only complain is it makes it really hard when going insanely fast because if I’m going into a building section after gliding at 300 mph, if I shoot a web and I don’t quickly calculate where it’s gonna hit, I just slam onto a wall 🤣 also you can’t just hold the stick forward, you have to go against whatever side your web is at

    hopefully they can add it in a patch or something (if enough people are vocal about it) but they need an option to disable changing directions midair. I need to turn the camera to see where i want to go but that shouldn’t magically change the direction of my current swing. I know someone will mod it in when this comes to pc of course but that’s many years away

    I mastered swinging from the previous 2 spidermans since i clocked 100+ hours on each and the difference is pretty much that if you calculate your height distance from the ground you'll hit the floor and you have to steer where you're going other than that is jut better to leave it at 10 is easier and Satisfying

    It’s basically like someone push you on a swing without effort , no assist is like your timing swing release like Uncharted 4.
    no assist Swing is difficult when you web near by tree vs the tall building its random so momentum drops fast.

    Personally 1 fits me the best, as it has abit of the "safe netting" against the ground but all the physics mid air mid swing for spidey. Not too punishing but definitely more skilled required.
    0 is too punishing imo

    I love the manuel swing but he has to be able to run on the ground while holding the webline, keeping some of that momentum and maybe jumping towards the end of the web's arch to be airborne and keeping the speed going. like in WOS, I hope they implement that in the future updates

    I didnt know this slider existed. I was disappointed that the swinging had felt so clunky and weird, with the swinging not following my inputs for sharper turns. I will definitely try out 0 swing assist when i do a 2nd play through.

    So, I sadly don't have the game yet, but I've seen some videos where people put the Swing Assist to 1 or 0 and they go EXTREMELY fast. What's that about? What setting is that? Or is it simply what the swing speed looks like at Level 60?

    Can someone share a video of doing some transitions from swinging to parkour. I really want to see if it's better and can be made into a more fluid transition. Like when you swing up and reach the crest of a building you opt to land and run along it and dive back off, or jump etc All I have ever wanted is to be able to make the swinging fully dynamic between the parkour and the swinging so I can achieve the kinds of playfulness from Spiderman 2's train chase sequence and the Amazing Spider-Man 2 opening sequence. Most of what you see Spider-Man do as well is yanking on the web to pull himself upwards, which I feel is another mechanic that would greatly improve traversal just by adding another option (sort of like the web climb in Ultimate Spiderman did). A web-zip at an upwards angle to yank yourself up if you get too low. Obviously doesn't make sense in physics particularly, but it's a move you always see in cutscenes etc.

      Unfortunately parkour is more or less the exact same. It’s really disappointing. There are noticeable momentum drops when changing to parkouring after a fast swing. They updated the momentum when you swing off of billboards and signs though and it seems to keep your previous momentum. I’ll try to upload a video tomorrow and link it for you.
      I totally agree with you about a web yank or web climbing, it’s one of the only things I still want. It seems almost necessary to quickly bridge the gap from ground to air too

    I think it's a great idea to make the swinging manual and more grounded in realism but at the same time I'd probably miss the spectacle of how Spidey swings with full assist... 0 assists probably feels nice but it looks so slow compared to 10. Or are there upgrades that make you faster and flashier even with 0 assists?

      Yh its because the game was clearly made for swing assist to be on and not physics based at all. This is why Spiderman still moves in the air without his webs at swing assist 2. But this is a good step in the right direction. Engage the players

      @@youngspecial64 it isn't. the web itself isnt a physical entity in the game like in Spiderman2 ps2. This is why he starts moving even though the web line hasn't reached the building and become taut. Or why in some cases, the webline is almost horizontal because it's latched to something to low but you still look like you are going straight and his body is still angled vertical. Or why you can't touch the ground. It's animation based the webs are just artificial

      Again, animation problem, not a physics problem becuase it kicks in automatically when you press R2! Spider-Man 2 (2004) looks more consistent becuase his webs and swing animation aren't flashy.
      If it was animation based? 0% wouldn't even exist right now.

You are wrong about spiderman 2. it's not because he's isn't flashy, You can feel that pendulum dip in height from the apex to the top of your swing. And you webline can vary. I can see that at 0% but not like in Spiderman2 Ps2. So no I guess I shouldn't say it's not in the game but it is indeed limited.

    I dont really know but i feel like spiderman doesn't usually move in a straight line when swinging, and if he does he would need to use both hands to get faster, i remember a scene in tasm2 where he swings with both arms shooting both webshooters while going in a straight direction, maybe to get faster to rhino.
    The thing is, i think he should be moving in a zig zag way to not loose speed because swinging from building to building is gonna cause him to swing towards the direction where the web was shot at, if the web was being shot inside of a place where there's a ceiling or at least structure above him, i could se him moving in a straight line

    I was hyped when I saw there was an option to have "no" assist, but once I tried it, it felt very off. What it's desperately lacking to work well is more control over where to shoot the web.
    I'm already in the habit of trying to push to the side that I wanna attach a web to (as even with the assist, I wanna make it look good and realistic so I'm not turning right while my web's stuck on a building on the left, as it just feels so wonky) and it works fairly often, but only really because of my positioning (being closer to that side), not necessarily the push of a thumbstick. So with less air/swing control and no system in place to let you choose which side to attach the web to between buildings, it wasn't as functional as I had hoped for.
    Now I just lowered it to around halfway.

      hmm this is strange cause pushing the left stick in the direction that i want to attach my web has almost always worked except for rare instances where buildings are really close together yet i still had a preference for which side i wanted to attach to. i agree with you though that the missing piece is having full control over where the web attaches, but that's just not possible with the way this game works. i have had success with the 0 swing assist by focusing more on my positioning before the web even shoots out. essentially i try to angle myself with each swing in a way that reduces the chances of my web pulling me in the wrong direction *before* i shoot the web rather than shoot the web first then hope it attaches to where i had intended

The "sideways swing" of holding circle, web wing usage and faster swinging speed will surely make a world of difference. I eagerly tried it veery early in the game and then ended up reverting to having 6 in the assist just to get to doing what I'm used to. Too hyped to start playing to re-learn haha.
      Love these games!
      But yeah overall I suppose I'd wish that pushing to left and pressing the trigger to swing would rather wait a bit until it reaches a building on the left, than opt to shoot it earlier to the right instead. Since that's mostly when it happens that it unexpectedly latches on to the right instead while I'm prepared to go left etc. But yeah I'm sure it's learnable. Cheers for the reply
