I did commercial spearfishing for a bit and we always used scuba gear, it was safer and less chance of accidents than apnea. I’d recommend getting experience in scuba.

What an incredible experience ! I love that you showed you blowing shots and the learning curve. It had to be sooo satisfying to nail the big one late in the day. If you hadn’t struggled earlier it wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying.
