The irony of a pirate singing the song of the Royal Navy - scourge of pirates and slavers!

Not so ironic when you think about it. Edward Teach, according Charles Johnson, served as sailor on a privateer ship around Jamaica during the War of Spanish Succession. He probably met Royal Navy sailors during this period, and fought beside them. And after said war, due the the conditions of relieved R.N. sailors deteriorating and more than ever scorned by other persons, a lot of them turned to private trading companies and/or piracy. The demobilization of many sailors, captains and other ships from all the european navies caused a great boom both in maritime trade and piracy. So, in anyway possible, sailors shanties could be known and sung by every man on the seven seas and four oceans.

Also, Teach died in 1718, and at the time the United Kingdom was still a slaver nation, so the Royal Navy didn't hunt slaver ships. The abolitionist movement only started in the late XVIIIth century and the abolition process was definitely completed in 1833.
And thereafter, the R.N. indeed started a hunt of slavers from the early 1800's.

I sing this when I take long bubble baths. I like to pretend that I am a British explorer and Royal Navy Officer like my hero, Sir John Franklin. The bubbles are like the ice floes and icebergs of the arctic.

I love this movie. It is such a brilliant artifact of nostalgic Disney. I kinda wish that the film had had some sequels like Herbie. Of course, if they did a modern sequel, they would cast someone like Johnny Depp in the role of Blackbeard, but there is nobody who can top Sir Peter Ustinov's and his performance The greatest choice for the greatest character, R.I.P. Mr. Ustinov.

This song was heard just before the battle of Trafalgar started in the 1941 movie "That Hamilton Woman". Laurence Olivier played Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson in that film; Vivien Leigh, who played Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind, played Lady Emma Hamilton.

Could you post the ending? where he goes back to his ship after saying goodbye to the daughters of the buccaneers? Loved that part! BB/PU was such a ham and ladies man. Love how he yelled at his crew on the ship when he went back... but they were loyal to him. Not a true depiction of the crusty old pirate, but a endearing one.
