  • ‪@MarkWintleFishing‬ This is part 1 of a short series about whip fishing, a method that I found deadly back in my match fishing days for catching lots of small fish at speed. Outside of match fishing it can be an ideal way to start novices fishing as cheap whips can be bought for £10 to £15 and little more gear is needed: some fine line, a pole float and shot and hooks, and you're fishing.

Mark I want to thank you for these 3 whip videos.
Been fishing 54 yrs now but 28 yrs ago got into carp fishing never float fished with rod reel nor whip for 28yrs only carp fished. . But two yrs ago gave up carp fishing as felt like I wernt fishing just waiting for alarms to scream off then lift rod up play fish.
Today I loaded car with short carp rods and some tackle to do bit of carp fishing after work tomorrow but wasn’t really feeling it. Then came across these vids and you saved me from a boring session that wud not have gave me any pleasure. So unloaded car put all carp gear away and put my two whips in car I’ve got a senses 5 metre and 4 mtr guru a class whip. The guru I’ve landed 5lb tench 6lb carp but it’s landed ppl 9lb pike 9 lb carp and 7 lb tench in reviews. So no worries hooking anything decent. Again so glad you was there to change my mind as said earlier just wasn’t feeling it going carping.
My lakes have big roach big Rudd had 3.8lb perch on sensas whip and perch go to 5.3lb in this lake. Always catch few perch on maggots using whip so the biggest one wud be great. Won’t catch these beautiful fish on carp gear. The Rudd I’ve had 2.5lb but have been caught over 3lb same as the roach. I’m now thinking about selling my carp gear already got ppl wanting my rods n reels. I have got a good few float rods and feeder rods. I catch carp on them. And the best one is tfg Matt hayes 10ft compact comercial it’s got nice tip action Matt landed a 37.6lb carp off the top on it but I use it for just pleasure fishing and caught 22.8 common on it fishing for tench. Anyway cheers mark I’m gonna have great day tomorrow on the whip.

Hi Mark, I bought my first whip in 1993 and I still have it; a Maver 6m system whip as you would call it. Just short of £100 in a clearance sale, but I have used it many times since. I now have 4 whips, a 3.5m Team Diawa, 5m Sensas, the original 6m, and I recently added a Drennan 4m Vertex whip for £30. I used this just the other day and had around 60 fish including 30 crucian carp. It is a superb fully carbon whip, unlike cheaper whips, and comes with a pole rig and disgorger. It was brilliant to use and I might add the 3m one later. You can't have too many.
(PS I am not sponsored by and have no connections whatsoever with Drennan, more is the pity and wish I was. 😂)

When whips were at the height of their popularity back in the 90’s Browning were among the very best imo. I had several telescopic’s from 2m right up to 9m for fishing to hand on the deep Bristol Avon. These included Browning Profil’s in the shorter lengths, Browning Eterna’s in the mid lengths and Browning Majesty’s in the longer lengths. All were brilliant with the Eterna’s being my all time favourites that, imo, have never been bettered. I also had the 2 Daiwa system whips (Harrier and Connoisseur) that you mention that were also excellent fishing them as short bread punch poles on the canal with light elastic’s through the hollow tips. I rarely use the whip these days but do own a Cadence 6m system whip and until recently the 9m version and found them to be very good. Such a shame that this style of fishing is no longer in vogue as it can be one of the most efficient and exciting ways of catching.

I recently bought a Daiwa Connoisseur 3.5m whip, not had chance to try it so looking forward to the next part of this. Tight lines.

I regularly fish with a 6m Cadence whip. Lovely bit of kit. They do one at 9m but I’m far too clumsy to use that well.

On most venues I think that whips over 7 metres should diminishing returns.

That Nissin rod is likely a Herabuna rod for Japanese crucian carp. I have some Shimano Hera/freestyle fixed rods and a couple Nissin Tanago rods. Japan does dedicated kit like no other country!

Hi Mark , it’s Nev Phillips, Burley fields was an excellent whip venue especially when I stated carp only counted as 1lb. Out of interest the next year I managed over 50lb of Rudd and roach on the whip only for Andy May to win with over 70lb.
I too have a old Diawa system whip and used it on our Division 2 National 3rd place and a year later catching Tommy Ruffe on the Div 2 National on the Huntspill and still use it.

It was a Shakespeare whip on div 2 & 3 as the diawa one was later

      Nev,
That third year when I had 26lb was my last Barclays match of any description. Burley Fields was a good venue; accoording to my diary my catches were mainly roach to about 12oz plus rudd.
      ATB, Mark

I know , I travelled with Wayne Nippard after. 2 of the Radbroke lads and I travel to Christchurch every year and fish the Royalty 1 day then a lake the 2nd day. Trouble is Tyrell’s Ford shut this year which is our normal stop so ended up at Premier. Maybe catch you there next year and definitely a shame you dropped out of Barclays team
