  • Monday's Car Video! A nerdy look at the templates for the VW Golf R.. the VW Golf Rallye (Mark 2), and the VW Golf R32 (Mark 4).
    ► This video is presented by SoloWerks Coilovers, and we thank them for helping these videos happen! CHECK BELOW FOR AN EXCLUSIVE SOLO-WERKS DISCOUNT CODE - valid until October 16, 2020!
    The Golf R follows a simple but effective receipe; small car, all-wheel drive, bigger power, special bodykit, nicer interior, but where did this start within the company? This video takes a look at the first two cars that featured this formula.
    Grey 1990 VW Golf Rallye owner : Jamie Orr
    Silver 2004 VW Golf R32 owner : Sean Maynard : / mdewod
    Factual disclaimers :
    This specific Golf R32 is a 2004 model, like as USA models; they were available in 2003 in Europe.
    The engine in my Golf Rallye has been modified; it has a Lysholm supercharger, not the original G60 ( kept the original motor for safety, and modified another engine).
    The engine is Sean's Golf R32 is really dirty; the car is being restored to factory original, and this is the pre-state of it.
    The USA received 5,000 R32, Canada got their own numbers (I spoke incorrectly and say 5,000 for North America).
    There's probably some other small things, but hey, it's meant with love.
    Today's video is presented by SoloWerks Suspension, who are based in Fresno, California, and part of the KW Suspension family. You can find out more details and purchase their coilover kits here:

      @@SynchroSk8 I'd love to swap a VR6 into mine! Maybe if the 1.8t ever dies I'll look for a Jetta GLI that's been hit in the rear or something.
      I think VW still sells the AWD rear floorpan if I ever choose to do that swap but IDK how much they charge for it. TBH getting someone to put it in would be the hardest part.

      Yes the Mk5 was missing in this video for some reason. Sad that people undermine it all the time but it did bring about the independent suspension and is the base for the modern golf layout (Mk6 was basically a facelift Mk5). Handling wise it shouldn't be ignored because its a much better car than the Mk4 for all aspects other than those who prefer the aesthetic of the Mk4 and electric steering.

    Awesome video man. Good to see rally content again here. One small note. The Italian market models were offered with side markers instead of the badge. And getting more specific. The company Autosystem offered Italian VW dealers retrofit a/c systems for the Rallye. These were then installed by the dealers and sold with an Electronic Climate Control. For a serious mark up I imagine. Which I have on mine and mines LB7V as well. Next year I'll be back in Pennsylvania ill have to swing by your shop with it, if you're around at the time.

    I need this dudes confirmation, but to all of you wondering what is this red blocky VW with a black front bumper and a missing hood, its a Brazillian model of car called the VW Gol, wich was a base model of the time. Though, this one can be the sport trim of the time, maybe a GTS or a GTI, because of the seats on the car. I guess I can say the Gol would be the equivalent to your VW Golf. It would came with a Air Cooled engine options on 1.0 up to 1.6 or an sportier version in water cooled engines available at a 1.6 or 1.8 versions. The water cooled versions are known here in Brazil as the AP engines, and the air cooled ones as the CHT or the BX.
    This car can be a VW Gol,a VW Parati, or a VW Voyage, both these share the same fronts, and these cars have the fame of carrying insane engines(AP) with awesome potencial, but not holding as much power, as their front would brake on various points because of the engines power and weight.
    A really well done AP engine with a turbo can embarass the sickest BMW's ir Audi's.
    Am I right about the car you have there, Jamie?
    Huge hi from Brazil🇧🇷!

    Man, the Golf Rallye you have is one of the most valuable of the dynasty!! I think the stock engine It's not very good because the kompressor isn't very reliable; in the other hand it looks amazing and that white wheels fits perfect. Here in Europe are more expensive than the R32.

    So I got curious and I found the missing link... There WAS a Mk3 Golf R... Kind of sort of not really!
    Apparently mainland Europe got a Mk3 Golf Syncro with the 2.9L VR6 out of the Corrado! It wasn't really touted as a special edition or anything so it didn't get any of the nice exterior touch-ups, but it fits very very nicely in the lineage between the Rallye and the Mk4 R32 .
    Kind of a shame that the Golf A59 never saw production, it would have been cool for VW to have an Evo/WRX competitor. :P

    • @JamieOrr
      @JamieOrr  Před 3 lety +1

      Agreed on the Mk3 Syncro existing and the best being the 2.9 VR6! I owned a Mk3 Syncro 1.8L 8 valve here in the USA, and it was a fun car. Sadly none of them got fun bumpers and other upgrades like the R / R32 etc, but definitely cool cars still :-)

    My signature pic is my TDI B4V Syncro/Haldex on bags. I can attest to the lineage of the Syncro/R32/TT Mk1. For example, VW used the exact same yokes and rubber couplers on Mk2 Golf right on thru Mk1 TT. Hell, the Sharan even got a Mk4 rear diff with an old style viscous coupler in place of the Haldex. I'm building another B4V TDI AWD this winter. We enthusiasts are indeed nerds for shit like this.

    Did they really sell the R32 without Xenon Headlights in the USA? Thought it was Standard on the Rs. But maybe its because of the front cover that afaik was not allowed to be made out of glass in America and they did not make plastic Xenons...

    • @JamieOrr
      @JamieOrr  Před 3 lety +1

      Correct, no headlight washers and no Xenons like the EU cars etc :-)

    Another thing that got bigger with the mk4, is the weight.

    • @JamieOrr
      @JamieOrr  Před 3 lety

      That's true, but progress (and safety) made that inevitable I think. The Mk7 was the evolution that brought back a great balance in my opinion, thanks to newer materials etc.

    • @klubstompers
      @klubstompers Před 3 lety

      @@JamieOrr Yea, but it is also size, cars just keep getting bigger and bigger. Wider, taller, and longer in the US. They could make a smaller car with all the safety standards, and they do for the European market, but we never get them here, like the Audi S1 and S3, Polo, Fiesta ST. BMW put out the 1 series, and it sold out instantly, here in the US, so there is a demand for higher performance small cars, but they wont give em to us.
      The MK7 is a beautiful car IMO too. Nice clean lines.

    • @JamieOrr
      @JamieOrr  Před 3 lety +3

      Good point :-) The Golf 3 syncro didn't have anything really 'extra', or special body parts, so I don't think it's in the same concept at the Rallye/Golf R32/Golf R. Same with the Jetta GT Syncro, Golf 4Motion etc, in my opinion.

      @@curlygerhard All 12V had forged cranks as well as all MK4 R's...when they got to MK5 i believe a great majority of them were cast cranks, but some did get the forged crank. (i've never personally seen one though)
