This is the only Korina Interviews episode that I actually shed tears. Even just a few lines that Rey sings brought so much memories of my youth in the Philippines. What a lovely man and I'm happy to say that I've met him in person once when he came to Hawaii for a concert. Mr. Rey Valera, thank you for your gift of music!
Iam almost 59 and have been living here in the US for the past 30 years, naiyak talaga ako sa interview na ito! The music, the story telling music with so much compassion, sincerity, purity of the heart that goes along with his timeless and distinct voice. Sino ba namang hindi maiiyak? I was so young when Rey Valera became famous, talagang puro kanta n'ya ang pinatutugtog sa radyo at may kapitbahay kami na may mga taxi at yun ang tugtog habang naglalaro ako sa kalye. 😅 favorite ko sa mga kanta nya noong bata ako at yung kinanta nyang "sumulat ako para malaman mo akoy nasasabik sayo" ano po ba ang title nun? Nasa Saudi kasi ang tatay ko noon, at palagi ako sumusulat sa kanya. At yung "malayo pa ang umaga" yan talaga yung naaalala ko ang aking kabataan. ❤

I remember watching a TV series when in the early 80s - Malayo pa ang umaga. Si Rey Valera pala kumanta. Wow, I love that song. It hits home for me. A little kindness goes a long way. Kindness is contagious.

My takeaways from this interview:
1. Rey is very humble
2. Kawawa ang mga song writers before the international copyright law was introduced sa Philippines
3. Salamat sa ABS-CBN for honoring Rey’s talents by paying him the right amount sa pag gamit ng mga kantang sinulat nya. Dahil dyan nakapagpatayo sya ng bahay. (Late ‘90s or year 2000 when he was able to build a house and to think that he was writing songs since the 70s and 80s 😢)
4. Kindness goes a long way.

One of my favorite Filipino musicians is Rey. I was raised listening to his music, and the only song that ever brought tears to my eyes was "Malayo Pa Ang Umaga." It always brings back memories of the middle of the 1990s, when my luck was pretty bad and I had trouble finding work. In the hope that I would be recruited, I used to search for work by walking around Cavite's EPZAs (Export Processing Zones) from dawn until the afternoon with my cousin. That song also makes me think of other young Filipinos, like myself, who struggled to get by while looking for work in our generation, often going without lunch and barely having enough money for food. I was deeply moved by the song's lyrics to the point where I started to doubt God. Given that I come from a low-income household, I always prayed and hoped that God would finally bless me sufficiently, which He did.

I enjoyed watching this, Korina’s interview with Rey Valera . Saw him in person performing at Clark airbase in Pampanga when we were on holiday there in the Philippines, 2019, l guest.
