  • Hello everyone!
    In this video, I have explained atmospheric pressure, how does an altimeter work and what are the different Q- codes used in aviation.
    Watch the whole video, as I have also used a flight simulator at the end to explain QNH setting and the aerodrome elevation concept.
    This is the best video you can find on the internet explaining the Atmospheric pressure and altimetry.
    Let me know if you have any doubts!

    I would really like to take a moment and appreciate the hard work you have put to make these videos. I haven't come across any aviation video with such a simplified explanation of these technical topics. I am glad to come across your videos, looking forward to many more of them. The way you explain things, I am sure nobody can forget ever! More power to you!

    You have mentioned that altitude is the vertical distance measured from the msl to where the aircraft is flying. I don't think so it's the correct definition for it. I think you have gave the definition for flight level.
    Altitude is measured from any fixed datum , not mean sea level.

  • @MrPouHan
    @MrPouHan Před rokem

    Hello again and thank you once again for your amazing explanations and visuals. However, your visual representation at 30:18 I believe is not correct. Indicated altitude of 9,000 and 11,000 with correctly updated QNH settings would keep them at separated by ~2000ft. Their altimeters would not read 10000ft if they had the correct QNH set unless they were both flying at 10000ft indicated, and ATC would certainly not clear them both to 10000ft.
    I believe the potential danger is if one or both a/c do not update the QNH to the correct setting and descends (QNH high to low), or climbs (QNH low to high) into the incorrect indicated (QNH) altitude. In your example, 11000ft indicated = 11000 QNH 1020 = 9000ft @ QNH 990 (unadjusted from QNH 1020). To stay at 11000ft indicated the QNH would need to be updated in time to avoid descending into the a/c at 9000ft that was flying with the correct QNH 990. Put another way if the a/c at 11000ft QNH 1020 did not update his altimeter to QNH 990 he would be 2000ft lower than indicated.
    By having all a/c fly FL's based off QNE avoids the possibility of a/c having incorrect altimeter settings and therefore flying at incorrect FL's.
    Let me know if I am not understanding it correctly. Thank you for your time.

    I have a question, if I am coming in for landing at an airport am I going to set QNH or QFE?

    • @blueskiesandtailwinds6004
      @blueskiesandtailwinds6004  Před 2 lety +4

      Hi, you will set QNH, because everything is calibrated around the aerodrome according to the QNH. The height of all obstructions around an aerodrome are given with respect to the sea level.
      So you set QNH on the altimeter sub-scale before landing and after you have landed, you will read the airport elevation on the altimeter.
      Hope this clears your doubt!

    @ClanLawrence Před 2 lety +5

    Sorry, but your explanation and definition of QNE is incorrect. This seems to be a common misconception all over the internet, from some sources that should know better. What you are describing as QNE is the Standard Pressure Setting (SPS or STD). QNE is a different thing altogether. QNE is not a Subscale Setting, it is an altitude reading, more specifically it is the indicated altitude of an aircraft on the ground, at the runway threshold, with 1013 set on the subscale. It is used very rarely, in conditions of extremely low atmospheric pressure when the QNH or QFE is so low it is past the range of the Altimeter Subscale and so is impossible to set.

      @blueskiesandtailwinds6004  Před 2 lety
