It's time to play another big cooperative campaign game from Awaken Realms!
Today, we are giving you our review of ISS Vanguard, after playing around 15 hours.
We have been big fans of both Tainted Grail and Etherfields from Awaken Realms before, and we had even higher hopes for this. The fact that @GamingRulesVideos worked on the rulebook is a good sign for getting quickly into the game as well.
So, here it is. Our thoughts on the game so far. We hope you'll enjoy it!

True that, hats off to Paul Grogan who said he contacted AR and asked them if he could help with the rulebook on this one, after they received so many criticisms on their previous games' rulebooks! It's so great to dive right into the game without reading a single paragraph of rules, have fun playing a simple (but a bit lengthy) tutorial, and then you still don't need to read rules because either you already know or the app introduces them to you!
First Awaken Realms game for me and I'm not disappointed so far!
(first miniature game as well, and they are as beautiful as they are superfluous, to the point I am actually asking for quotes to get a proper paint job...)

Nice review! I'm just over 40 hours into the campaign and the story has continued to shine. There are some big moments in the game so far, and I still haven't been to probably a bit more than half of the systems.

You had me at Suikoden!!!!! Did you really just reference once of my all time favorite RPGs!? I was nervous to watch this review because we usually agree on 90% of games and I Kickstarter this based on Anthony's preview way back. I was like please don't give it like a 5 or 6. Now I'm even more excited! And I will go back and play Suikoden while I wait for it to arrive!
Haha, glad we didn’t hate it then 😅 Don’t read too much into the Suikoden reference, it’s just something I thought about when it came to the fact that you have 90 people to recruit :)

This was an excellent review. I absolutely love Etherfields and Tainted Grail. However the rulebook for Etherfields made the barrier of entry a bit difficult as it took extra time to figure out. Knowing that the work Paul Grogan did here is excellent. I absolutely can't wait for my copy!

Wow, really great to hear your positive impressions of the game and it's one I'm so happy I backed. Just waiting for the US ship to dock so they finally begin fulfillment to US backers. It absolutely makes me think about Mass Effect, but this is way more exploration, and not really any combat mechanism. Good to know I feel :)

Actually,I'll get Roll player adventures in my mailbox tomorrow or Monday,was lucky to get an example from a local store who got it from kickstarter. I have been in search for a fitting game for ages now and Roll player and Vanguard are some of the games i have been looking at. Your review of both pointed me in the right direction and made me got both of them👍

Funny you should mention the Roleplaying aspect, and it feeling less personal. I didn't have that feeling, and it felt like it wasn't even a conscious decision, but in our Campaign I had Bojana as one of my first crew that I ranked up and, using the Personnel Files, got her Veteran Status. As a result, I read through her background and storyline, and even though it amounted to 3 paragraphs of story, it really shaped how I proceeded with her Section (Recon). All of a sudden Recon was a very pro-Alien section, and made decisions correlated to that mindset. I kept Science (who I was also running, as my friend and I were each responsible for 2 sections) relatively neutral at that time, but then for practical reasons I had to reassign Bojana to Science, and as a result determined that her pro-Alien stance affected the Science section and started influencing their behaviour. My friend, who was running Security, started connecting with that, but being the belligerent individual he is, took a human-first stance in defiance of Recon, which has led to a shadow war between Security and Engineering vs. Recon and Science around how we interact with these new species we come across. This has made every decision very personal, and has given so much weight to every new planet and species we come across. Which is my roundabout way of saying that I think it is what you make of it. Although no one crew has nearly the story that our characters in Tainted Grail had; however, because each crew has their own story and motivation, we have been able to have our decisions change dictated by the higher ranked crew and their corresponding "influence" on their Section.

All three very different, giving me different experiences and stories, but all superb games for me!
This looks to be inspired by an old John Butterfield game “Wreck of the BSM Pandora”.

The original was a 1981 release from Simulation Publications Inc (SPI) and one of the very first paragraph games. John Butterfield who designed it is a very creative guy. He also did Freedom in the Galaxy which was remade as Star Wars Rebellion.

I checked the price for the core pledge on Gamefound, and it was $99. I don’t think many other campaign games like this, or other games in this size is a lot cheaper?

Just an idea : get inspiration from Tom Vasel’ review : joyful with colors in the background, not a dark sad wall, and show the game !!!
Hey :) We love our background, but have been plauing with ideas, and will continue to find something that works with our space!
Also, in the beginning of this video, we say, as we always do in games with spoilers, that there won’t be a lot of pictures in this one :) We always have loads of pictures in our videos most of the time :) We’re also working on a second camera angle that will show the components on the table :)
