    I have worked as an Incident handler and level 1 IT operations. Now retired. I had a brief look at Power BI in 2018 and started learning POWER BI. Then the retirement came and I ditched it. After seeing your tutorials and the way you explain and teach, you have rekindled the desire to learn for learning sake and for the pure pleasure of learning. I cannot thank you enough for your modest way of teaching and absolutely very potent and useful content. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work and may you reach your goal of helping others.

    We can calculate Gold% in Power Query also before loading data to power pivot, then why we should use DAX to do it? What is the advantage of using DAX to do calculations over PQ? Please explain.

    • @chandoo_
      @chandoo_  Před 3 lety +1

      While Gold % is not the best example of what Power Pivot can do, the measure is flexible and optimal. We can see Gold % for a country, continent or any other grouping with the measure. Power Query column wouldn't let you do that.

    Hi Chandoo. I like your every videos and material.
    Recently I was looking to do survey analysis using Power BI. Mean I am looking a way to do analyse survey data in Power BI than R or SPSS etc. My main focus is looking for multiple type questions, questions using Likert Scale and Yes/No type questions combined in a Survey Design.
    I could not find suitable material which I was looking for.
    I also never did survey analysis in Power BI however I did in my MS using R but I now I am shifting to PBI as it save my time at work rather than shifting multiple analysis packages.
    Hope you could bring something to suggest me🙏🏻.

    I was wondering why on this example you would choose to fill down to get rid of the nulls, if this fills it with the information from the row above, than this gives an incorrect country name to that row and makes the data skew in favour of that country no?
    Or was this just used an example of something you *can* do?

    I agree but (respectfully) disagree with some of the main points in this video.
    1. DAX is part of the ETL portion (referred to as "Power Query" in this video). In fact, you can see the DAX expressions for each step at the top of the screen.
    2. It might be confusing to some to refer to the aggregation and other calculations on the data after the ETL portion as "Power Pivot" as this tool in Excel is used to create pivot tables and not just new measures. (Even further "Power Pivot / Chart" in Excel allows users to create pivot tables and visualizations as part of the same process.)
    Perhaps a different way of looking at the Power BI segments is ETL > Data Model Tables > Visualization. Though, of course, they're not exclusive to Power BI. (I've even created similar dashboards on the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics sourced from Wikipedia pages in Excel but could copy the DAX queries from Excel into PBI.)

    • @chandoo_
      @chandoo_  Před 3 lety +1

      Unfortunately, you are wrong on both.
      1. The language in Power Query is M and not DAX. Please check Microsoft Power Query documentation here - docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/
      2. There is no confusion. Aggregation is another word for calculation or measure. You can make such measures in Excel or Power BI too. No matter where you do it, they are handled and calculated by the Power Pivot engine.
      While I agree with your conclusion " a different way of looking at the Power BI segments is ETL > Data Model Tables > Visualization", the arguments are not correct.

    • @arthurmiller5276
      @arthurmiller5276 Před 3 lety

      @@chandoo_ Thank you for your response. I guess we can "[disagree] to [agree]". LOL
      I do appreciate that you at least acknowledge my suggestion of Power BI segments as "ETL > Data Model Tables > Visualization".
      And I acknowledge that at least *I'M* confused by the distinctions in exactly what's being referred to between M language, "Power Query", DAX language, and "Power Pivot [/ Chart]" particularly when discussing Power BI versus being able to do identical work in Excel.

    • @chandoo_
      @chandoo_  Před 3 lety

      I recommend reading more on Power Query language and DAX (Power Pivot) language for knowing the distinction. They can be confusing and the lines are blurry in many areas.
