Some say you should never spend more than 50 dollars on a bottle of bourbon.
Allow me to adamantly disagree!
While you can get a lot of excellent bourbons and whiskey for less than 50 bucks, you might miss some really fantastic (and rare) stuff if you don't spend more.

I couldn't collect any kinda whiskey/whisky because I'm gonna drink it no matter what the price or how rare a bottle is.
😚
I would have to try it at least once
That's my porblem. I will destroy an $80 bottle in no time flat
Lol
First video and new subscriber. Love the style of your video. Cheers! 🥃
Taste is totally subjective. "Better" doesn't necessarily mean you'll like it. So far my absolute favorite bourbon is Maker's Mark. The taste just hits the perfect spot, that I can't have enough of it. Second is ofc WT101. I never buy same bottle twice, unless it can impress me to the core that I wanna keep it around. I've tried more than 100 bottles of whiskeys from all over the world in a wide range $20-200 and so far permanent place in my bar earned only 7 bottles: 3 Islay scotches (Caol Ila 12, Lagavulin 16, Octomore 10.1), 2 Teerenpeli whiskeys from Finland, WT101 and Maker's Mark.
So follow your taste, not the price or hype.
My advice is this: if you can afford to do something and want to do it then do it. If you can't afford it or don't desire it don't. It's your life. Make your own choices.
Funny that the Four Roses single barrel is one of the more complex bourbon out here and it's mid 30's in my area. So maybe you don't need to spend over $50🤔
It's right at $50 in North Florida.
45$ Hawaii
37 in north Miami Beach, Walgreens
$48.98 after tax here in Brooklyn NY
Андрей Иванов insane deal in south Florida Walgreens
I've got 4 bottles sitting on the cabinet all in that range. I only have 4 or 5 drinks a week, like one shot each so it lasts forever. Great channel!
It makes me said. Whiskies are a lot more expensive here in Brazil and the more expensive they are in the States or UK, it is 2-3 fold here.
In my opinion there are no bad bourbons, just better ones but not super delicious as the price goes up, people think that paying thousands for a bottle will guarantee that it'd be like god's tears but it will taste like bourbon, maybe smoother and more complex but it'd be a bourbon, there's a limit of how good can it get and after a point it doesn't get much better, just older and that's what you pay. Personally I' fine with $15 to $20 bottles.
The Jefferson Reserve is one of my favorites
Yes the high cost of bourbons these days is due to supply and demand. But what I learned while touring Scotch distilleries while I was in the Navy; a lot of the price is driven by the angels! The longer the distillate ages in the barrel; the more evaporation; therefore less available to bottle. The distiller wants to make the same amount of profit from every barrel filled; hence why you have to charge more for an older whiskey. Then there's the marketing. I used to be able to get Blanton's, Weller, Stagg, and many other bourbons by just driving to the ABC store and it was there on the shelf. Bourbon is now in a boom, and almost all of the premium brands are in a shortage. Here in Virginia, right next door to Kentucky, the bourbons made by Buffalo Trace are limited supply, and the majority of the premiums are placed in a lottery system.
Hmmm, no, not convinced, there are a lot of great inexpensive bourbons out there!
True but there are more that are better at a higher price.
Any bottle of 86 proof will do same recreational effect no matter the age, color or cost. Alcohol is alcohol. If you drink to get buzzed, cheap is best. On balance, the few who can afford another hundred dollars for “smell & taste” variations (that come at extra cost to the alcohol itself) can spend their big bucks any way they choose.
Most workers cannot AFFORD even $50 for a bottle of hooch, be it bourbon or scotch or cognac. If someone clears $15 an hour AFTER taxes, a $60 bottle of bourbon equals a full half day’s wages. 4 hours’ work for one bottle. It is a guarantee that NOBODY who buys Pappy Van Winkle is devoting a year’s income to one bottle (IF they can find one at all!)
Distillers make their money on the “discriminating drinker” who can pay 5x more on a bottle. Taste & smell at a price. Or cheap liquor straight up. Depends on your wallet.
Man, the thing is not the pain spending upwards of 50 bucks on a bourbon or scotch but spending upwards of 50 and realizing the stuff does not deliver for what it is suppose to deliver for higher price tag since in range of 50-120 is the MOST hit it or miss it range. Many a times 70-80 a bottle going for 70-80 is just as good as a budget bottle that can be had for 30-35 bucks and sometimes even less. PROVE ME WRONG.
you literally said the same thing over and over again for 5 min
kidomaruss he's half lit
ditto. This guy would be a headache in a bar.
@@PalJoey-rm2yh you just don't like them there's no problem with that I'm sure he wouldn't like you either 💫
I recommend you guys go out and try Whiskey's at different bars before buying a full bottle. You can also buy online 50 milliliter bottles for a large amount of distilleries so you don't have to spend hundreds on Whiskey do not like.
The 50 ml are the way to go man. There are a LOT of cool taster clubs out there.
Any suggestions?
Im fine with mellow corn, that shit is $13 a bottle, best price point on any whiskey i think.
Squire Muldoon - A bottle of 10 High is great!
Up here in canada pretty much all bourbon with the exception of a handful are usually over 50 bucks
Same as in Australia. Hard to find decent bourbons below the $40 mark. Wild Turkey 101, Makers Mark and, Buffalo Trace are about $50, Knob Creek is about $85. Most (Bulleit, Jim Beam) start at $40.
It makes experimenting expensive. I tend to stick to my favorites because I know what I'm getting.
Buffalo Trace, 40 bucks CAD if your LCBO has any in stock. It's a good starting bourbon.
Don't bother looking for it in the Canadian Whisky section, made that mistake the first time looking for it. I went to the whisky wall and kept looking and looking, my wife asked if it was Canadian and I was like, no, it's Bourbon, it can only be called bourbon if its made in the USA. The wife kindly twisted my head where I realized that the placard heading for whisk(e)y had Canadian and American in front of them. Felt like an idiot. Found my Bourbon though. Cheers.

I rarely spend $50 + on a bottle of Bourbon unless its Saint Augustine Bourbon. And i try to keep my Bourbon on a budget except during the Holidays i splurge on a bottle
Jim Beam Devil's Cut is my favorite Bourbon so far and it's not that pricey.
Woodford and Eagle Rare are my go tos but i have been to a few beer and bourbon festivals and the really aged shit does taste awesome.
Every time I have spent more than $50 I have been disappointed. Eagle Rare for me.
Blantons Gold is worth every penny
My wallet wants me to drop scotch for bourbon like there’s no tomorrow.
dhsilv2 I find most bourbon over oaked if they go much over 10. Imo
Yeah. They “hype” and grey market prices are doing no good for the real enthusiast sadly.
dhsilv2 I’m looking forward to in 8-10 years when all these newly opened American craft distillers have some quality aged product to bottle. I think it’ll get the big distillers a bit worried.
I'm curious to see what happens too.
I feel you. Today I spent as much on one bottle of Ardbeg 10 as I did on two other bottles; one bourbon and one Irish whiskey. The bourbon was Elijah Craig, and for $28, it's a damn solid bourbon; very well balanced. The other was Jameson Caskmates IPA, (I've only had the Stout edition till now) and it was good, though it might take some adjusting to compared to the Stout barrel. I have to say, even though both of the other whiskeys were very good, they didn't compare to the Ardbeg, even though it's just the classic 10 year. I'll pay that extra $20 every time if it means that I get to enjoy a whisk(e)y as much as I do with my Islay single malt scotches. Now if only I could learn how to drink the stuff slower..
Yes. A bottle of Makers Mark is better than Pappy's
Its good but there are a lot out there as good or better. Woodford Reserve, Four Roses. These are two of them
So, I think you make good points, but I'm disappointed that you didn't do any comparison or contrasting with lower vs. higher costing bourbons. I think it's interesting that only two of the bottles you have there on the counter cost more than $50 (unless that Elijah Craig is barrel proof?). I've been drinking bourbon now for a couple years and I love it. However, with a few exceptions, I haven't found bourbon that costs more than $50 to be insanely better than those below it. I'd like to see a part two to this episode.
SIXTY BUCKS for Four Roses? Maybe in Hawaii. It's not even $35 where I live and it's everywhere. You must have been drinking a bottle of cask strength without realizing it....
Nobody, who ever landed on this page will be new to drinking. Bro keep up the moral.
For me its more like usually i drink the 7$ cheap stuff and ocasionally i get a 30 dollar bottle
Giotto Vongola -- A bottle of 10 High is great.
The $7 stuff is gross. Especially the first time I tried something only $20.
Kentucky Spirit is my favorite of the bottles you have on the table. I get it for $49.99 a bottle. Jimmy Russell chooses every barrel. 7 to 9 years old and some of the store picks are amazing. Keep the vids coming!!
Just watched a few of your videos and subscribed! I agree with everything you said. Great job and very cool channel! Good luck
A lot of people use tobacco eat spice foods. That can Chang the way you tast buds work. Most people I know mix there drinks. I am not buying a expince Bourbon to mix. And to tell the truth as long as it does not taste bad I am fine with any of it. Especially when I did drank a lot.
I hate paying for expensive bottle of bourbon and it being hot and spicey
You have a point, but only up to a point. Yes, you need a point of reference($22 vs $50+). Here are the deal breakers for me:
1) Bourbons' flavour profile is too narrow to begin with.
2) Being 20%(ish) tastier due to aging doesn't justify a 100-200+% increase in price to the consumer.
3) It's bourbon, people. Don't get caught up in the hype.
4) There's way too much hype!
5) It's not as interesting and absolutely varied in flavour as Scotch and it never will be or can be.
I like bourbon and drink it on a regular basis, but I will not pay Scotch prices for it because of it's limited scope in flavour. Instead of having 10 bottles of $50-$70 bourbon, do yourself a favour and go 1/2 with $50-$70 Scotch. The differences in the Scotch flavour profiles should make you see reason.
This is just a subjective opinion. To me, every single malt scotch I've ever tasted is indistinguishable. That is, they taste like someonc put out a campfire in my mouth. If I want to taste smoke and ashes, I'll just find an ashtray.
@@fredschwarz3334 Then you've probably only tasted about 4. Peated scotch makes up a tiny portion of overall scotch production. There are a handful of distilleries on Islay and other islands making mouthfires. There are HUNDREDS of distilleries that don't peat their whisky at all. This coming from a hardcore bourbonr.
Bourbons flavor profile is too narrow? Crackhead spotted.
Most of the time, you get what you pay for, but it doesn't somewhat hurt if you splurge once in a while
Haven't tried Jefferson Reserve or the 4 Roses yet, but I will soon.........
The point you’re getting at is it about your personal taste preference
Question what’s a good smooth whiskey 🥃 cause i don’t drink whiskey that much !!! Can you recommend me a good few good whiskey thx
It's not bourbon but Monkey Shoulder is a good Scotch that's pretty smooth. Jameson, which is Irish whiskey, is a another good one for newcomers too. Very smooth for the price you're paying. I can't find it in Australia but Four Roses is meant to be quite nice or perhaps try one of those honey flavoured, whiskey-based liqueurs. I've never tried one yet but they're quite sweet and people seem to love them.
Certainty wish you were back with videos.
I think that the best whiskey is the whiskey you like. Not what others say is the best.
It’s a shame you kept interchanging the word bourbon with whiskey. You’re confusing your audience. All bourbons are whiskeys, not all whiskeys are bourbons. That being said bourbons don’t age as well as say scotch or Japanese whiskey. Namely, location location location. Then/Kentucky whiskeys don’t age well for weather patterns and elevation. I think I saw an Orphan barrel bottle on your table. I’ve tried 3 of them, they all tasted like gnawing on various woods. Would take Angels Envy over them any day.
Early Times is a sleeper, $25 for 1L too!
Rare breed fantastic at £50. Don't bother with the over hyped stuff or the secondary market
The first bottle of bourbon I tried was 1792 small batch. Next, I tried Bulleit...Nope, too much heat and no oaky taste that I enjoyed with 1792
I generally agree with you, however there are small handful of bourbons under $50 that I enjoy, like Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Wild Turkey 101 and Larceny. I enjoy your reviews!
Larceny is gasoline lol. To each there own.
Really? I thought it was major hype as well, and I was gifted a bottle. I really enjoyed it. Hell I'm not even a huge Wheater guy and I really enjoyed it. Of course, I do find most every sub $30 bottle I love tends to be a Heaven Hill product so....there's that. Gasoline though?
My wife made the mistake of telling me to try more expensive bourbon to see what good ones should taste like. I love Bookers and Blantons, but actually found I like eagle rare the best.
I tend to spend between 40 and 50 bucks a bottle. I turned down a 90 dollar bottle that I thought tasted like a 70 dollar bottle.
Shit... I don't spend over $30! There's way too many "bottom shelf" bourbons that fly under that radar and go unnoticed IMO. Benchmark old #8 and Evan Williams black label are excellent choices! Rebel Yell too!u
I thought we were going to decide which ones are worth $50 here
Hey brother, what glass is that your drinking from?
What is your favorite bourbon so far?
Doesnt seem hes interested in telling ya
Have you tried J. Henry and Sons out of Wisconsin? I recently purchased a bottle and found it to be much different than what I was used to (Turkey, Trace etc.) Would love your opinion.
Shay knobs creeks
How do you yourself rate bookers bourbon? Been wanting to try it. I really dig your videos and value your opinion of bourbon. Where I'm from it's around $74- $80a bottle and of course my wife says, "just to drink it?". But it looks so tasty and I have to agree for me that is pricy. But if you would say it's worth it, I would definitely not hesitate the next time I'm in the fine wines and spirits.
What glass are you using I love it
Like I tell my friends, if you have only being getting budget bottles for a while and your budget this week only allows you to spend $35 on a bottle, just wait a week or two and by that 70 or $100 bottle.
I’ve had pappy’s 23 and it was cool to try once but I prefer eagle rare.
are you holding that glass hoping to look cool or what?
why the failure to call out "any of the many" carpetbaggers cashing in on the bourbon boom, with highly priced, sourced supply, dressed in marketeer spun tales full of more hooch than the bottle.
I’ll never buy a £50 bottle o bourbon. Bulleit n Makers Mark are good enough for me. A Gentleman Jack now n again.
"A few stinkers over 50 bucks" and glances at the bottles next to him, anyone get this? Trying to say some are stinkers on the table?
You Jameson special reserve..I used in my first barrel and turned out like Mother's milk. About 75.00a with.
Gimme , Makers and WT all day. Not a high price point by any means, but I would put thoes 2 against any other bourbon.
I had 1 glass of Pappy and didnt care for it honestly.
I live in Norway, so over here $50 is pretty much the starting price for bourbon... Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam and Bulleit all cost roughly $50, and it only goes up from there
Fredrik Hannevig Welle-Watne ouch thats rough just got a bottle of jack 7 came with a free highball glass and it was 20 usd. How much is your say 10 year scotches like laphroaig or ardbeg cost you? Those are about 50 here
Those are around 60-70 bucks over here
Fredrik Hannevig Welle-Watne well for being the happiest place on earth thats rather sad
Plus, to make matters worse, there is only 23 types of bourbon available to choose from... If I want anything else I will have to import it
Fredrik Hannevig Welle-Watne technically they're all imported but I get your meaning lol i took a trip to California and couldn't find a good bourbon anyplace.
Is this video restricted to the states of FUSA?
Can you stand tall, I mean can you stand normal and talk sence?
Look a bottle is lucky if it lasts me a week
kentucky spirit is just a few bucms over 50 and well worth it!
Outside of Elmer and Blanton's for special occasions, not sure you should ever spend over $35.
ya i just started drinking bourbon here in toronto canada bulleit bourbon
What's the opening music? I love it!
He doesnt know. That's why you have no answer
Where i can buy this glass are you use????
I have spent too much on Bourbon too
Don't buy any bourbon that is shelved below the hip. I spend $25-$30 and haven't been disappointed yet.
his opening statement is silly some older whiskeys are more complex but not nearly always
though to be fair he saved it a bit later on...
"With controlled conditions"
So, are we to assume this guy doesn't actually know how bourbon is made?
only way il spend more than 50$ on bourbon is if i buy a 40oz a jacks
Saw today Duncan Taylor Mcallan rarest 1969 for 18k
That's scotch
What is the bottle closest to your right arm with the gold label?
Orphan barrel rhetoric 21 year
Where did you get the glasses you use during your videos?
Thank you, Sir!
Cut the intro by half, please.
what's the name of your background music
knob creek is good shit.
... I mean what?
Nice beard and bald, brother. Good perspective on bourbons!
wine is a good guide to price and quality. $5 wine is mostly rancid
Subscribed from aus 🇦🇺
Hey what camera do you use ..?
Excellent video, thank you, much appreciated. New sub : )
i dont feel like you conveyed any useful information here.
"you dont need to, but you should"...
followed by, " you might be disappointed, or you might not"...
i mean....wtf.
Cant put a price on fun and happiness
Do not spend more than 50 dollars on a bottle is just an old wife's tale
It’s about taste like Coca Cola or Mountain Dew sweet. Or bittersweet if Collecting bottle how do u taste if not open for money what about straight whiskey
all is subjective, that said most individuals in a blind taste test couldn't tell much difference between Old Crow, any $20 Jim Beam , Knob Creek, or Bookers. all have the same mash bill but differ in price, age and barrel placement and selection. I do agree you won't know the difference until you try them, and to be so surprised when your subjective nose and palate would prefer a $20 Jim Beam or the $70 Booker's. Just my subjective opinion
Buddy Winters - hey buddy if you couldn't taste the difference between a Single Barrel Knob Creek and an unfiltered barrel proof bourbon like bookers, then I'd say you or anyone else for that matter were born without taste buds.
maybe
I think that goes to where most people who drink whisk(e)y are doing so on the rocks or just don't have a pallet for it. I'm just starting out so I probably couldn't tell the difference but I do know what I like in general. It goes back to where he said if your starting out maybe don't spent more than $50.00 since a lot of it may be lost on you
I've had cask strength that taste smoother than a BIB, so abv doesn't always show itself
OK, make believe name, water doesn't add flavor but does affect flavor, and your delusional if you think that higher proof equals more intense flavors. Again as my original post states "all is subjective", but water does change flavors and yes at times makes it more intense, by opening up or releasing the oils in the whiskey( also known as tannin)
This guys always drunk from drinking Bourbons!
Man, are you copying Daniel Whittington?......just kidding. Cheers!!!!
Most of those $$$ bourbons suck ASS...
Woodford or Bulliet forget any others that cost more.
Might be? Disappointed?
Trust me, don't waste your cash.
I only watch your vids for the intro then I click off
Kinda looks like Ron
why are you leaned over in all your videos? bit of a weird look tbh
Whiskey is subjective everyone has different taste ya snob
Dude's drunk lol.
Lol MGP
Rhetoric is not worth the $$$
