@@CockatielKing Nah fucked if i know honestly, we picked it up and i replaced the head gasket and then also the heads since the old ones were rooted, new ones had roughly 500km on them. after that i think it was only driven 2-3 times around the block and then sat for a year or so as the owner went away for a while, it was sold off roughly 4 months ago to a young fella in mudgee

The boys a 4wd247 and all 4 adventure are basically giant advertising platforms, and they've left their roots behind. This is Raw, and Awesome, and something I'd probably do for sh*ts and gigs. Keep it up boys!

The old 253 loves the rpm but lacks the torque.
From memory the vn 5l injected heads fit and flow huge amounts more for parts from the wreckers.
Then you can run boost, lots of boost to get the torque back.

i have a 1982 LN46 With a 253 Red in it with square cut timing gears the amount of people who ask how did u fit a super charger under that bonnet is priceless
the one issue you are going to find if you try to engineer it is that you will either have to run it on LPG or pass the dreaded smog tests which is near impossible luckily for me LPG was easy enough to do good luck they are so much fun to drive on the hwy but so much better in the bush

As someone that owns a Old School Hilux, (i Own a 84 Hilux) That Hilux doesn't have a 4 inch lift, Looks like a 2 inch lift due to still running the factory straight drag link, If it was over 2 inches you have to run the drop drag link,
You can run 35's to 37's on a 2 inch lift on those old school hilux's with out much issues.
With the old 253, get rid of the single barrel carby and manifold and put on a 4 barrell manifold and carby, you will get a shit load more power.

I have an 1981 Hilux with a 253 in it. But yours looks a year or 2 newer.
Mine goes surprisingly good seeing it has done well over 2 million kms -kind of hard to believe. Leaks oil but seemingly does not burn oil. Runs on straight gas, runs well on gas, though even with 2 large tanks range is not great.
I recently swaped out the tired suspension , put in the max 2 inch lift, with 33s on it with -22 rim offset. even with the standard lift kit, I had to do a range of mods to get it to drive & sit properly. There were some oddities to fix & rectify.
It came with the G52 gear box, my understanding is they are not the strongest box especially for this conversion. I will be looking for a R150 for it this year.
    What gear is in yours?
These conversions were not the best. Mine when I bought it was not engineered & the placement of the radiator further forward from stock was not properly done.
I suspect mind was a diy conversion as I think a good number of them were, there were things on it left not done properly. But reportedly it had been driven around Kyneton for about 40 years like this, supposedly never picked up by the fuzz.
All the critical mods relating to the engine were done properly so, the engineering cert only cost me $250 about 5 years ago.
With the 33s on it @ full compression (with a 50mm bump stop extension up front, I still had slight guard clearance issues @ the fire wall end, which I will be addressing @ some point.
I only bought it as a drive around while builing my dream 4wd but for all the short comings of it, it has kind of grown on me. I am inclined to never part with it.
It wont compare to the project I am building but as I have gotten more into 4wding recently I have been blown away as to how capable it is.
You can't plough through stuff like in a GQ-GU monster, need be more strategic about how you wheel with it.
Years ago I drove one with a 308 in it, towing a 2 ton trailer & you could hardly feel it was behind.
I recently saw Castlemaine Rodshop had a customer with a newer surf that had an LS in it.
I am also aware 4.2 Lexus engines have been put in them also, wondered if they might of been a more balanced fit than the Holden motor, better power to weight than a 4.2 boat anchor @ least - as I have heard them called.
Mine is not great on the hwy even with the new suspension but the torque off road is awesome. I suspect it might drive better with the R150 box in it. With the G52, the range of 2nd is rather short, I am not really moving untill I am in 3rd & 3rd has huge range.
Brakes were never spectacular performers on these Hiluxes, even less with the extra weight of the old school v8.
I would like to do some kind of brake up grade on mine. I have also hear of people putting GU diffs under them & I guess going to the extent of getting rid of the leaf suspensions for coils. Which I guess makes sense aside the cost, the drive train bits for these seem to be getting harder to get.
I look forward to seeing what you guys do with it. I hope more than just carting fire wood.
    Great video!

And, no they didn't have anything better in Japan in the 60's - euro's were, like today, horrendously unreliable but quick - when they worked, US/AU had muscle, weight and simplicity and Japan had reliable but *grossly* underpowered donks.
