Vložit

- Kingsnakes and milk snakes are generally beautiful, but sometimes bitey snakes. What if I told you that there is a tricolored snake that isn't inclined to bite? Would that be the perfect pet snake for you? Let's take a look at the mountain kingsnake to determine if the mountain kingsnake is a good pet, and whether it is the best pet snake for you.

We'll hi there! Will and I have returned from two weeks deep in the Amazon rainforest. Next Saturday we'll have a special live event to talk all about it. More details to come. Hope to see you there!
Very cool!
I can’t wait to hear all about it!!
I hope you had fun!
Here is the link: czcams.com/video/oG66TQWbkvo/video.html
“We will hi there”
Why can’t the so called discovery channel or national geographic etc grow a brain and get this man his own tv show, you’re absolutely amazing and love your videos so so much thank you
the Discovery channel is no longer for discovery, the History channel is no longer for history, news is no longer to inform.
I wouldn't want that, then clint will probably no longer do his videos anymore
The history channel may as well be called the Conservative Christian Channel. It was acquired so they could talk about the Bible like history.
@@BlackMasterRoshi and animal planet really isn't animals either, all just reality TV 😔
He's perfect here on CZcams
I kept a California mountain king snake for years. Ridiculously easy to take care of and beautiful. Their personality is a little blander and less spicy than some other colubrids-that’s my only drawback. They are perfect for beginners, better than corn snakes IMO.
For rookies bland is good. I'd rather have a boring snake to handle than a defensive or flighty one
@@therealshino4607 Absolutely. I don’t care about morphs or anything like that at this stage. Temperament first and foremost! I have a California Kingsnake who is an absolute softie.

Last summer while volunteering at a kids carnival event, I requested to be placed at the reptile booth. I’m a film intern so I have no training in animal handling, but I love Clint’s Reptiles so much I wanted to be around the reptiles. I wasn’t expecting to hold animals but I was game for anything.
The reptile handler handed me snakes left and right, told me how to safely show them to kids (no petting the head), and within minutes I was showing off snakes (and an empire scorpion in my palm) and shouting snake facts to like ten kids at once. It was a little overwhelming, I don’t know how people like Clint do it! Before this I’d *never* held a snake in my life. Like it’s astounding how much responsibility I was given immediately in holding the animals, I’m just some film intern that showed up. I held a milk snake, a ball python, and a king snake on my arms and body while they were pet by a lot of different people. The reptile handler even put a 10 foot long Burmese python on my shoulders to keep showing it off while he took his lunch break. That made me a little nervous but it went okay.
WELL. While showing the snakes off to the kids, I forgot to sanitize my hands in between holding the different snakes. The king snake BIT me in front of twenty children crowded around my table. LOL!! I froze, definitely felt afraid/embarrassed with all the kids watching me. But it was okay, I stayed calm, put him away, and disinfected the bite, only my pride a little wounded.
Thanks so much for this channel! You make learning about snakes so fun!
As for my carnival expereince, overall 10/10 why the heck did this man give a 21 year old a Burmese python to hold for people to pet while he sat for his lunch break.
Lol of course it was the king snake that bit you and not the Burmese python. That's exactly what I would expect Lol king snakes are like YOUR HAND SMELLS SLIGHTLY LIKE ANOTHER SNAKE MUST BE FUD
What a great experience :D
I have a little experience with reptiles, I do own a couple snakes, but if it makes you feel better, I was hanging out at a conservation booth. They were crowded and I was being shy but I didn't want to intrude on others being educated. I had seen them at other shows, but somehow I ended up with a baby caimen in my arms while he went to take care of something. I was like uh... give me some facts so I can know what I'm talking about! I had a lot of fun.
The grey banded king snake is so pretty! Wow, it’s gorgeous!
I know Clint has been expanding his channel and trying to go out and do more things for new videos but these kinds of simple best pet snake videos are what made me fall in love with this channel. I wish he did more of these like he used too. Granted he might be running out of snakes to do videos on
I'm not running out of animals for these videos, but do notice that these videos don't get many views. This is the fewest views a video of ours has received in the last ten videos.
@@ClintsReptiles oh man, that's so unfortunate. I love these ones too
@@ClintsReptiles thanks for doing a vid on mountain king snakes. I almost requested for this snake to get reviewed before your video came out.
That's such an adorable thumbnail omg. This is by far the cutest snake I've ever seen. I'm bawling my eyes out, which means it's extremely cute!!!
"Was that natural?"
"It was SUPER natural"
Matt Jepson is Misha Collins in witness protection confirmed.
Thank you. I went looking through the comments to see if anyone else thought so too.
We have two gray banded kingsnakes, an MBK and an Apalachicola Kingsnake. I have never been bitten or had one bite itself, even after handling them consecutively. But that Utah Mountain is now on my kingsnake want list!
How big are your gray banded I have been looking into getting one and I keep finding conflicting information on the adult sizes of them and most king snakes actually
@@duanehodges1512 our adult male is probably 5 feet I would guess.
Love milks and kings! The Utah mountain kings are absolutely gorgeous bro 👌🔥
Those gray bandeds are one of the hardest wild snakes to find. Crazy color variety too
He always explains it perfectly, just like with the rosy boas in the moth breeding.
I just recently got a Mexican Black King. Gray Banded is probably going to be my next.
Matt with the Collinsworth slide. Would be neat to see a video on the different species of snakes within a group. For example, you have done milk snake video. However, there are 20ish species of milk snakes. Maybe not a pet rating video but one on range and being able to tell one species from another. Granted we don't expect you to have all the species in studio, but you could use pictures and video for most. Heck give Clint a teleprompter so he can show us how to ID the snake Madden style.
Nice to see someone recognized the origin!
I actually used to have a pair of Lampropeltis Pyromelana Woodini which is the Huachuca locality
Woodini is sunken now and part of knoblochi, but Huachuca animals are awesome, I have a pair of them also.
The one and only snake I ever caught was a juvenile cal mountain king and was totally unexpected. I recently wanted to get into herping and realized I already found my dream herp
Years ago I had both an Arizona Mountain Kingsnake and a Rosy Boa that I caught wild. Amazing pets. I took them to school classrooms for outreach education as they were great with kids.
That banded kingsnake is beautiful. love the grey and bronzes.
The end clips are hilarious 😂
Caught a juvenile mountain king snake crossing the trail up in Idyllwild, Cali. Super beautiful, and placid temperament. Great honor to hold it for a moment, then return it to its hunt, far off the trail. Stunning snakes.
I am in love with the pattern variation on that specific GBK Matt has there.
I have been keeping Boas and various types of Pythons for years. I would like to add a Kingsnake to my snake family. This video is perfect for learning about them. I want to make sure I can understand the snake and meet his or her needs. Loved listening to Matt.
Love Mountain King Snakes. I fell in love with them as a child living in Arizona, and always wanted one. Got my first one 15 years ago. Now have had 4.
YESSS FINALLY I LOVE THESE GUYS! I have one already! The only thing I'd say is they're more likely to regurgitate their food than other kingsnakes
I've wanted an alterna for years, that bright orange on that flat grey, such an amazing contrast. They also have SO MUCH variation from one locality to another. I really like the 9-Mile North Sanderson locality.
I agree, the problem with TRI coulour hognose snakes is they have shirt lives. They are beautiful though
I had a fun idea while you were gone!
So I personally wouldn't benefit from this, but I am all but certain there are so many people who would absolutely enjoy this. As a side series, I think it would be fun to make a "best pet camera" series highlighting the cameras you've worked with, which were good for what, and what you recommend for the amazing shots and B roll you guys get! I bet there are a lot of nature and herp photographers who would absolutely geek out over your camera equipment and it could introduce your channel to a new group of fans! Basically, I think everyone in the world should love Clint's Reptiles as much as I do!
I love this! As someone with multiple different kings, this was a lot of great info. That being said my Alterna definitely has a large amount of his enclosure blacked out because he just tries to eat any of the other animals he sees through the glass 😂
I've been watching your channel for a while, and I just got my first reptile! I found a beautiful young Arizona mountain kingsnake at an expo today. She's gorgeous and has a great temperament, calm but curious. Turned out, the mountain kingsnake is the best pet snake for me!
I'd love to see a series where you create a hypothetical ideal snake/lizard, taking things like size, temperament, care etc from different species
I have seen my MBK bite himself one time on feeding day as a baby. Also tried to eat my finger for about 15 minutes once when he was young too. But after getting a couple sheds in at home he’s never even tried to bite me or anyone else yet, plenty of handling. Such a good boy
Those are really stunning! King Snakes are so common that sometimes it can be hard to get excited about them despite the fact that they are so cool. But if those don't just wow you then nothing will.
PLEASE look for the various BCC and other boas in Peru!! They are known for beautiful true Red Tails, would be amazing to see you and them in the same spot lol!!!
We found a beauty down there.
Those Utah mountain kings are absolutely beautiful, I'm in the UK, if I find a way to find one of these it may have to come home to live with me, will depend on the score they get first though, thanks for this vid though, not seen these amazing snakes before (obviously have seen kingsnakes before) just not those ones and I'm in love ❤️
They are essentially Arizona mountain kings that range into Utah. You may have a much better chance of finding a generic Lampropeltis pyromelana in the UK, and it will be pretty much the same thing in terms of care, behavior and general look.
@@6strings735 thanks, I'll definitely check that out, I'm not one to impulse buy pets so I'll do more research but they are beautiful and Im sure id be able to give one a lovely home
Mountain kings are so pretty!
9:32 made me laugh so much🤣🤣🤣
Saaaaame 😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah this was a good one🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I never expected this video lol. I have a California Mountain Kingsnake, and love her to bits! She's only 2 feet long, but I have her in a 40 gallon bioactive tank. It's so much fun to watch her explore, and she has never tried to bite me either, which is something you don't get often from kingsnakes.
I recently found 2 of these on my property in utah. First time I have ever seen one. Didn't even know they were in our state.
Awesome! What part of the state do you live in?
@@NJ-hf4vb it was in sanpete County.
Grew up in the mountains in Northern Cali and mountain kings were always a treat to find.
Yes, more kingsnakes! My Mexican Black is my first snake and is the most delightful animal I could imagine. There are so many gorgeous species of kingsnake, and I’ve fallen in love with their beautiful and striking colors and patterns, their fearless and sassy attitudes, and their love of digging, climbing, exploring, and food. Plus, most of them are diurnal, so you get to see the most of those incredible and varied colors! (*Mine* only comes out in the evening, of course, but every species has its night owls.)
Could you cover Eastern King/Milk Snakes at some point, too? I know they’re not common in the pet trade, but they’re the species native to where I live, and even though their colors are more muted than their southern stripey cousins, I find them just as if not more beautiful; I love the saddle-like pattern they have, and I think they just don’t get enough attention!
There's so many kingsnakes, I really want a couple. Though I also want a House Snake first I think... And about 100 other snakes lol. Great video! Thank you. The splotched Nelson Milksnake is on my short list too!! I love the Lampropeltis head shape :)
I would love to see a video dedicated to the grey banded king snake. I have been wanting to get one for a long time
You should make Florida King Snakes the next king snake video!
They are rad and I've found one in the wild!
I had a California King snake during middle/high school. I often fed her desert iguanas. Was a great pet
Now I want a gray banded kingsnake.
I really enjoy your videos, Clint! I’d love to get your opinion on rhinoceros ratsnakes. They’re such gorgeous little snakes, but there doesn’t seem to be very much quality information around. Thanks for all that you do
Dear Clint, if possible please make a video of rats - if they make good pets. :3 You have mentioned this idea in one of your older videos and I have been waiting for a rat-video from you. :D
I have kept an Arizona mountain kingsnake for 12 years now and he was my first snake. He is easy to care for and is kept with ambient temps. I even have a full care guide on morphmarket for the species.
I know i’m super late to this but do you mind sharing the link or where to find this care guide? It seems incredible!
Aweee they look so cuteee, Im gonna remember their nam3 for when I'll be able to take care of one
Very cool. I came across a California Mountain King Snake while out cycling yesterday. I wasn't sure what to do or what kind of snake it was, so I just encouraged it to cross the road, but now I know I can just pick them up and move them to safety.
I love the little harm hugger that just refused to become non-comfy all video haha
Clint! I've seen them up at mid-high elevation in South Willow Canyon and Dugway Canyon in Tooele county, about an hour west of you! The Deseret Peak trail is a great place to spot them mid summer.
Found one of these in northern AZ at summer camp when I was a kid.
I love your bracelet you're wearing Clint. It's so pretty! And much darker than its cousins.
Please cover more of the different king snake species!
We had a kingsnake of some description in my high school biology class. Very striking snake, quite friendly. Potentially too friendly, liked to slither inside your jacket or other loose clothes when you were handling it. But never bit any of us kids that I heard of.
Awesome video, I’d love too see the Florida king get some time in the spotlight
I have had two very long term Cali kingsnakes, and while they have their charm I'm pretty well resolved to never get one again due to their temperament. But every time I think "I'll never get any kingsnake again" I remember that these exist...
Wow 👀 the bright one and its belly pixelation is gorgeous. I just rescued a baby Scarlet King so i gave him food and good shelter. Im wondering if the behavior might be similar
I caught a California Mountain King when I was a kid. I grew up on the central coast of CA and would regularly catch Gopher snakes and CA Kings. I'd keep them for a few weeks to a few months and then release them. I don't think I was ever bitten by any king snakes past the initial catching stage. Anyway, I saw and caught a mountain king on Mount Figueroa. What a beautiful snake that was, but I couldn't get him to eat so after having him just over a week, I drove back to where I caught him and let him go.
I never had a CA king that wouldn't eat.
Ooh! Pretty Colors!
I’ve got both a corn snake and a kingsnake, both probably less than 5-6 months old. Handling the corn snake is a bit easier. It takes a while for the kingsnake to settle down. I almost lost her today when she escaped my hands, and found a tiny hole in my couch armrest, just wide enough to fit through. Luckily caught note of that in time to pull her out before she disappeared into my couch forever.
Usually handling goes like this: gently nudge the snake out of its hide… get pissed on a few times, snake tries to make a break for it, and then calms down.
Pyros, zonata, alterna, etc. all great reptiles. Bite attempts are pretty rare.
Gorgeous animals! So I tried my best "Well Hi There!" on my last favorite channels video...afraid I didn't do it justice, lol. Added a segment from one of my favorite vids of yours on the nile monitor :-)
Thanks very much for pointing me to Great Basin Reptiles! I was considering a Dumerils boa, but instead bought a Centralian python.
I do like Clint's taste in bracelets.
This video inspired me to get a grey banded kingsnake as my first snake!
When you mention other videos in the video. it would be great if you could start linking them in the description. Or in the comments at the very least.
I'm happy that reptile hobby didn'T die
What gloriously beautiful animals! Thank you for sharing them with us, being in the UK I am always stunned by the wonderful variety of US wildlife, a blessed place if ever there was.
Since finding your channel I have learnt so many interesting things about snakes, so thank you very much!
Please do a video on the Apalachicola King Snake (Lampropeltis getula meansi). I have one, and I love him. XD
That Grey-banded King is challenging my local Milk snake for my fav Colubrid - I have the normal phase here. Only found one ever.
I’m pretty sure I found one of these two summers ago here in NM
Wow! I can't figure out which is most beautiful!
I guess accidental attempted eating doesn't count as a bite.
my dream is to go to the Peruvian amazon to visit the incredible diversity of native fish, but you better believe id be watching for reptiles aswel.
Gorgeous snake.
One of my favorite snakes and you finally did a video!!!
They’re great snakes ❤️ I loved my Arizona mountain kingsnake! I’ve thought about getting another one someday
That song was awful Clint 😆 love you! I am so happy for you about the Amazon trip! What a dream trip, you deserve it. 😊
I love King-Snakes and I think they would make for some amazing snake pets, but if not that's fine, either way I just love this video
These snakes are so beautiful
In Utah we also have the Utah milk snake
These are always so much fun to see wild
Matt kimda looks like Mark Wahlberg
One of my fave snakes ♡ cant wait for the live event ^-^ have a good day!
Wow, the variant with the solid red belly and white and black stripes is STUNNING-the L. zonata?
Those are Utah mountain kingsnakes.
@@mattjeppson8051 thanks, Matt! I don’t think my cats (or lifestyle) will allow a snake, but it sure is fun to dream.
Have fun in Peru boys. interesting place
My dream first snake
My kingsnake is definitely a food motivated little fella... though it's interesting because you would think this voracious nature would actually not help them when they like to bite themselves, but they seem to be just fine and thriving in nature. XD My boy has even tried to eat a box... cardboard. And I had to pry him off of it. I feel like he's not the brightest. lol
I am a super into big snakes but these snakes are getting my attention
I love tricolor snakes too! I owned a Florida King snake for quite a while. She never bit me when handling her thankfully, but early in my snake keeping career, I did not realize that king snakes ate other snakes. I had just purchased a beautiful sunset corn snake. Her colors and markings were astounding. I made the mistake of buying the snake before I had an enclosure ready for her. I decided that while I got something together for her, I could just plop her in with Scar, the Florida King. I put together a wonderful enclosure with all the bells and whistles for my new acquisition. But alas! When I went to get her I found she had somehow escaped from Scar's enclosure. I looked and looked for what seemed like forever. Discouraged and frustrated, I glanced at my Florida King snake. What's this? What is that hanging from her mouth? Then it hit me. What had I done? I was heart broken for months and so angry at my stupidity and ignorance that cost a beautiful creature its life. A hard lesson to learn.
I also owned a Sinaloan Milk Snake. Absolutely beautiful snake. Very calm and easy to care for. the vibrant red in contrast with the black and white. . . I fell in love.
The Utah Mountain King is one of my favorite Utah snakes.
Hi Clint. Looking forward to seeing the Amazon session. My 8yo Remy would like to hear your opinions on Cuban Knight Anoles. Thanks for all the educational work and videos. We are big fans.
Here I thought he nailed it on the first try! rofl omg the bloopers are hilarious!
My last Cali king was very feisty. Loved to look you right in the face while you held it then musk all over you. Very enjoyable to interact with as long as you accepted that at some point you were getting musked.
I think it'd pretty cool if you did a video on puerto rican boas if you manage to get your hands on one
Clint I would love to see you make a video one day to help people like me understand all the morphs, hypo, het..lol idk but what does that all mean? I think your the perfect person to help break it all down. In searching for our new reptile pet the market is flooded with the all these terms that we just aren’t comfortable with to make a clear decision. Is one better than the other and why? Love your videos and keep up the great work doing what you love!
Great idea!
Wow, I just love the coloration on mountain king snakes!
Jesus is the way and the truth and life no one gets to the father except through him
I had an orange variable (L. m. thayeri) that was one of the calmest snakes I've ever encountered. I would feed it frozen thawed in a separate chamber and put in the mouse first, and sometimes it would strike the mouse and begin swallowing while it was still wrapped around my fingers.
My wife had a snake phobia that became full-blown OCD unfortunately, and I had to re-home it with a friend.
Sad face. Very sad face.
Great, now i want to keep a Gray Banded King.... LOL
